Josephina, Josie, Kilgore has always been a special girl. Or at least that's what people said. Josie, however, didn't see it. Yeah, she had a special gift for music, but that's it, and that wasn't special right? I mean Mozart was a musical prodigy as well. Among plenty of others. So Josephina couldn't be special, or so it seemed.
Along with being musically talented, she aced school. Her report cards were always a's, she was the best speller in the district, she was in magnet math, English, and science. She was even learning a new language by the first year of middle school. Like I said, she aced school.
Josephina's family life wasn't always easy. With three older siblings, and four step-siblings. she was pretty much the middle child. It didn't help that she looked different from most of her biological siblings so they called her adopted. I mean with siblings jealous of all your successes, it'd be pretty hard for you too, wouldn't it?
Her mom was also on the list of her problems. She agreed with everything her fiance sid, even if it was stupid. And she was always talking bad about Josie's dad. It also didn't help that her grandmother was super religious and didn't agree that Josie's mom had a girlfriend.
Her only safe haven was the high school band room. The only place she was the favorite in. Josie played the oboe. For those of you who don't know that's basically a clarinet-like flute. The oboe is also one of the hardest instruments to play, so there weren't many oboeists in the state, therefore everyone wanted one. Portland county high school ninth-grade class was lucky enough to get two, Josie and her friend Miguel.
Miguel was one of the few people who weren't on her list of "things that cause my anxiety." In fact, he was one of the few guys that Josie actually caught feelings for. But she didn't want to ruin their friendship so she hid them.
So her seventh through tenth-grade life was pretty miserable. Then, in eleventh, something magical happened. Her school was holding a fundraiser with an auction. But not an ordinary auction. One of those auctions that sold girls or guys off for the afternoon. Anyway, Josie was up to bid, and everyone bid on her, but Miguel bid the highest.
When he went to the stage to get her, he kissed her. Right there in front of everyone. And not of those mwah kisses and it's over. I'm talking full out french kiss. Like a whole make-out session.
Then she worked even harder on her oboe, to get into college, and she got her first solo at districts. She went all the way. After that, tons of ivy-league schools offered her full paid scholarships. But she chose the University of Kentucky because that's where Miguel went.
Sadly, they never got to see each other. She went on to write music and novels, while he became a famous basketball player. And actually, they both created something in their careers. Josie created a new type of oboe that sounded like a trumpet because that was Miguel's favorite instrument. And Miguel went on to create fashionable basketball shoes because Josie hated the way basketball shoes looked.
Don't you dare think that's the end, though! It's not the story that will continue thirty years later when they are forty-eight.
Part two coming soon!!!!!!!!!
