Coming of Age Fiction Sad

I am living in the world of 2050. The situation is not the same as it used to be before. I remember, in the year 2020 when the pandemic broke down, we faced a lot of difficulties and things became more complicated in the year 2021. India became the next Wuhan. The shortage of hospitals was then a common issue. But by God’s grace, the situations normalized by the beginning of the year 2022. Although we faced worse situations in the pandemic, something was healing itself-The Nature. But as it is said, “Once destroyed, nature’s beauty cannot be purchased at any cost.”

The climate since the year 2025 started degrading again at a higher rate. The situation started becoming even worse than the pandemic. Stepping outside without masks is now an invitation to deadly diseases. Skin cancer, asthma, and ischemic heart diseases have become very common. People nowadays are yearning to roam around like they used to do in their childhood but have no option rather than to remorse. In some parts of the middle east and North Africa, dust storms have become very common, resulting in people’s inconvenience and their migration to other parts. People there are suffering from unrecoverable chronic breathing and lung problems.

The fastest sinking city Jakarta has already sunk due to floods. Previously it was said that Jakarta may sink by the end of the year 2050 but due to the current climate apocalypse, the flood-prone city has already sunk. The migrants of Jakarta are living in adverse conditions. These days multi-storeyed buildings or skyscrapers (in some places) buildings have become very common to save space due to overpopulation. Places like Venice and Bangkok are on verge of sinking in the near 40 to 50 years. Global temperatures and sea levels are rising at a higher rate. The low-lying coastal cities are experiencing devastating floods. Some cities have also sunk due to excessive groundwater pumping.

Space agencies nowadays have become more advanced and AI-based. Space tourism has become viable, but its expenses are very high which are affordable only for the very rich people. During these years, several space missions have become successful. The Roscosmos Begins Offering Space Tours (2021) that aimed to create a new tourist destination in space has succeeded. Elon Musk’s company SpaceX that planned to launch an unpiloted mission in 2022 has also succeeded. Many space missions lost their connection and hence could not succeed. But apart from this, about 22,000 large objects are orbiting the earth that includes both working and broken satellites and bits of old rockets from past space expeditions. There are about 1 million bits of space junk or space debris in the earth’s orbit. The Gateway Earth, a fully operational space station with a facility to recycle old satellites and other junk is said to be set up by the end of 2050.

These days, due to the adverse conditions of the climate apocalypse, schools and offices are online as we used to have in 2020 but with more advanced techniques. Around 90% of the student population is pursuing online degree programs. There is some improvement in the education policy of children. Children have the facility of personalized learning and more e-learning platforms. These days there are no physical campuses. Traveling classrooms and the real-world environment have become the new campus. This has affected students positively as they are now no longer dependent upon a certain place and can study from wherever they are. Several new branches like Artificial Intelligence, Social service, Political Science, and many more are also included for the betterment of children.

One of the most essential things for existence, the Water has now almost declined. By 2025, 60% of the world’s population has faced water shortages. Water scarcity is a very common issue. People even don’t have enough water to drink or even fulfill their basic needs. Groundwater has already depleted by 80%. “If there is magic on this planet, it is contained in water” Now we have realized the true meaning of this valuable quote but now it is too late. We have seen people dying in thirst. We forgot that the water cycle and the life cycle are one. We never knew that the water that we used to waste so easily will someday be so expensive to buy.

Oxygen is one of the essentials for our existence. The harsh reality is that if trees could give off free wifi signals, we would have planted millions of trees and saved our planet; but unfortunately, they only produce the oxygen we breathe. In our busy lives, we forget that for our existence, trees are so important. Humans are most insane to cut trees, make paper out of it and write ‘Save Trees’ in them. For our profits, we took the lives of thousands of trees each day, and are facing its consequences now. It is quite impossible to walk out without masks as the air is so polluted. The government took several steps to save trees, but our society never paid heed to their words. Now, we have to carry Oxygen Cylinders with us. If we would have planted more saplings in the past, we never had to pay money for the Oxygen that trees provided us selflessly.

Massive crop failures, apocalyptic fires, imploding economies, epic flooding, hundreds of millions of refugees fleeing regions made uninhabitable by extreme heat or permanent drought. The first climate change in the world’s living memory took place about 2000 years ago when two subsequent massive volcanic eruptions over two years threw up so much black dust into the upper atmosphere preventing sunlight from reaching the earth. This led to a cold wave that devastated agriculture and commerce. Today, the problem is the exact opposite: too much solar heat is trapped in the atmosphere by greenhouse gases generated by burning fossil fuels. Previously it took 10 years to land a man safely on the moon, we now have 10 years to land Earth on a safe trajectory for our future. Although technology has become advanced, robotics and Artificial Intelligence are controlling everything, but scientists have still not discovered how to make Oxygen and water. We, humans, are called the most intelligent species but we are not. We first make our planet inhabitable, find some other planet, make it habitable and then destroy it. The Earth was what we all had in common, but for our greed, we are now roaming around space to find some suitable habitable planet.

___________________________________________

Although all this is fiction, don't make it happen in real. It is not too late. Planting a sapling is not expensive. Saving water for our future generation is our responsibility. We have not taken this Earth from our ancestors, we have borrowed it from our future generation, so don't destroy it. Earth is a beautiful place that we can save by togetherness. Save Earth, there is no Planet B.

Thank You.
