It was the summer of 2016, a summer I would never forget. I was only 10 years old at the time but had the mentality of a 30-year-old. I’ve always been told this was a blessing and a curse. I never really understood what my family meant by that until July 3rd, 2016.

First, let me give you a little background about my life. I am 10 years old, standing 5ft even. People around our town say I remind them of Zoe Saldana , the lady from Columbiana, however, I don’t see it. Anyways I am the oldest of 3 siblings. We live in Arizona. My mom works as a child psychologist and my father is a neurosurgeon.  Our life has been pretty smooth up until about a week before July 3rd.

That’s when it began...

“ Let’s go, Alexandra, let’s go now”

As the sound of wood crackling echos in my ear

“ what’s going on Alex, what is happening ”

” Our Treehouse is under attack, they have figured out where we were hiding! We have to go now ”

I jump out of the bed, race down the steps that lead out to our kingdom, trying not to burn myself from the fire that has engulfed our palace.

” Let's go, Alexandra, you are moving too slow, we have to get our younger brother,” says Alex from the bottom of the ladder.

I hop down the latter and start to slowly fall to the ground.

Everything goes pitch black and the entire scene changes.

Everything is dull, the trees are dying, the grass is brown and there are no flowers. It looks exactly like our backyard though. I don't get it. I slowly start to walk towards our house and that's when I see it. A dark shadowy figure standing by the window. It looks like it's trying to talk to me.

After about 5mins passed by I can finally hear the voice clear.

It whispers ” the treehouse is key ” over and over again. ” The treehouse is key ” ” The treehouse is key”.

I hear a loud BOOM and I wake up out of my sleep.

I've had this same dream over and over again, every single night up until July 3rd. I finally understood what I had to do.

Our dad built our treehouse about 2 years ago and for some reason our youngest brother never liked it. I never understood until those dreams kept happening to me! They actually didn't dream at all, it was a message coming from our ancestors letting me know what my duty is in this life.

July 3rd, 2020. The temperature outside 98 degrees with a heat index of 105.  Our mother and father had already left for work and our baby sitter was watching the news on tv.

I jumped out of the bed, grabbed my brother and sister who are only a year apart from each other, and headed up to the treehouse. We grabbed snacks, water, my handmade slingshot, and a few other weapons that may be useful. they never asked questions, which I loved about them, but they've always had my back.

We headed up to the treehouse, with everything in hand.

Alex asks me  ” Alexandra what are we doing up here, it's out and I want to go inside”

” We have a duty to fulfill and that's protecting our home and our treehouse, some very bad people are coming to get us and we have to be ready,” I said

Alexis sighed ” not this again”

I ignored her remark and art up shop. Our treehouse is about 8 feet by 8 feet and has a giant window facing our house. It sits about 10 feet up from the ground, lodge between 2 trees, and has a ladder and stairs leading up to it. Inside is a bench, a bed, and a desk with a chair.

We had to be sitting in the treehouse for about 2 hours before I saw a figure scurry across our yard.

” DID YOU SEE THAT” I yelled

” see what ” Alex and Alexis said at the same time.

” Oh never mind ” I barked back.

I move to the other side of the treehouse and just over the ledge I see an army of red figures all equipped with slingshots.

” It's wartime, I saw this in my vision, it's time...”

Before I even had the chance to the red figures were surrounding the bottom of our treehouse.

” Let's go! It's Time ” I say to Alex

He doesn't move. I turn to Alexis and she isn't moving either. It was like they were both frozen in time.

I run for my slingshot on the other end of the treehouse, I grab our drinks as well and started to pour them out the window. The red figures were not bothers at all.

” Ay, Sy, Ai ” was all I heard before I saw our treehouse light up in flames. I tried to get Alex and Alexis to wake up but nothing was working! Finally, I was able to push them out of the treehouse before it was too late. Next, I grabbed my slingshot and started to fire anything I had in my reach. A few of the red figures got hit but it seemed like they only multiplied. Nothing was working. The flames slowly crept up the ladder and steps, burning the trees and wood that made up our treehouse. I was stuck, I felt defeated, I didn't know what to do.

It was only one thing left, to jump as I saw in my vision. I hopped on the window seal, looked down, and took the first step out into the open air. Next thing I know everything went black.

When I woke up everything was very bright and I kept hearing a beeping noise. When my eyes finally adjusted I realized that I was in the hospital.

” What happened, how did I get here” I looked up at my parents.

” Sweety, you are in the hospital, you jumped out of the window to your treehouse. You kept saying it was on fire and you had to save everyone. Do you know you also pushed your sibling out of the window? , what were you thinking ?” my mom asked.

I remained silent. I know I wasn't tripping. I know what happened really did happen and I did what I felt was right. I don't care what they say, I am not crazy. I tried to save everyone and they don't even care.

” Alexandra, you could have really hurt yourself and Alex and Alexis. This time you have taken it too far. You didn't start acting like this until you started spending all of this time in that treehouse. We are having it removed” my dad explained.

I remained silent. I didn't want to hear what they were saying, and it was no way they would ever take down that treehouse.  It is the best thing that has happened to me and I have to protect it. Even if that means risking my own life.

About a year later, we realized that treehouse had welcomed unwanted negative spirits. They slowly started to take over my body, ruining everything around me. The funny thing is, we removed it on July 3rd, 2017, a year after the last major accident happened.

Great story😉. I did find it hard to envision the story happening through a ten year old character. It also seems like most of the afternoon was spent outside the treehouse, overall i liked it
