On September 14th, 1999 I was born as Zoe Kashey. I was called Zoe, introduced myself as Zoe, and grew up as Zoe. It was like that until I was two. Mom, Dad, and Zoe. Simple and pure. Or at least I thought it was. Sometime in 2001 my parents split. Nobody bothered explaining things to me, all I knew was that I had two new names. My mom called me "Baby Girl" and my dad affectionately called me "Short Bus". Of course to strangers I was still "Zoe", but I didn't feel like Zoe anymore. I wasn't quite Baby Girl or Short Bus either. I was all...

I’m not entirely sure how I got here, but I know that I don’t like it. I’m positive that if Jacob hadn’t been brought here too that I would have just sat in a corner and cried. He’s so small and soft that I get the strong urge to protect him at all costs; which is odd because typically the girlfriend is the one that needs protection. Ah well, forget the gender roles, we need to get out.As Jacob holds on tightly to my hand, I make note of our surroundings. It’s a small dark room, there’s a plastic table, a few chairs that probably have some d...

It's the thought that counts, but you've known me for two years. You should know exactly what to get me.His words bounce around in my head as I enter the mall. No pressure or anything, I just have to get him the perfect gift. Truthfully, I have no idea what to get him. He doesn't have a lot of room for stuff, and he doesn't really talk about the things he likes. I kinda just have to guess. Walking into GameStop, I browse around hoping to get ideas. I could get him a new video game, but he's really picky about them. If I get him a gift card, ...

Growing up, my father and I loved going to the old thrift store down the street. The brick-red building had fading paint on the sides. I think it used to be a mural of some kind. The windows were littered with old deals and ads to lure people in. I'm pretty sure I've seen a 'Grand Opening' sign still there. The cluttered outside was the opposite of the neat rows of old clothes, toys, and other trinkets. It was almost too clean, with white tile floors and bright lighting that made even the dullest broach shine like it was new. Even the ...

Norma Jean sat in her large comfy chair next to the fire. Her apartment was silent aside from the crackle of the burning logs and her kitten, Wilma. It's been years since Norma Jean had any visitors, let alone family members, which is why she considers Wilma to be her family now."Well.. tomorrow is Thanksgiving, Wilma. You suppose we should start the turkey?" Norma Jean asked herself more than the kitten as she shuffled to the kitchen. Norma Jean, being 73 years old doesn't really need a whole turkey, but she makes one anyways in hopes her g...

I always enjoyed visiting my grandmother in the summer, seeing her smile with excitement every time I walk in the door on that first day of June. I might be an adult now, but that doesn't stop her from ushering me into her kitchen and immediately offering me cookies. Her house always smelled like freshly baked gingersnap cookies and always had a warmth that made me feel loved. "Thank you, Grandma!" I say as I eagerly stuff the spicy-sweet cookie in my mouth. As I do my little happy cookie dance, I look over at the aging woman. Something...

Olivia was always a smart girl. She understood more about life than most of her teachers. Most would assume that her parents just told her these things, but as people got to know her they realized her wisdom came from experience, not lessons. Olivia's closest friend, Gabriel, learned first-hand just how much she knew. Gabriel was older than her by a few years. He had a job and was living on his own, but Olivia just graduated high school that year. Gabriel thought that he would test her, see how much she really knows about the way the world w...
