“Another F?” The smack of the test papers hitting the desk followed. I didn’t have to look over my shoulder to know Dad’s disappointment. “Where’d you get that?” I mumbled out, the large, circled, red “F” glaring at me. “Look, kiddo.” He gently pulled me by the shoulder, twisting my desk chair around, and knelt down in front of me. “You didn’t have to hide this from me. I’m here to help you.” His eyes looked sad. I bit at my short thumbnail. “I know you are, Dad,” I said, turning back toward my open textbook. “I’m fine.” I st...

“There she is!” Julian goaded loudly, gesturing toward the kitchen. He could barely be heard over the deafening Blink 182 song “What’s My Age Again?” playing through the speakers and the crowds of already drunk people chit-chatting around them.Kathleen took another big sip of her drink. Her face began to feel hot. She didn’t know if it was the cheap can of beer or her nervousness. Through the many groups of partiers, she could see Bobbi making her way with some friends into the kitchen area. “I can’t do this.” Kathleen shook her head, w...

Beep-beep-beep. Beep-beep-beep. Beep-beep-beep. The tiny sound of my digital watch notified me of the new hour, but I could tell it was way past leaving time with only the moonlight illuminating my corner of the library. Voices came from outside. I shifted to my knees and peeked through the window above me. “What are you boys still doing here?” It was Mrs. Henderson, the old lady who worked behind the counter. It was the first time I had ever seen her outside of the library. She was nice and all, but I always thought she lived ...

I’m not a person who usually asks for much. I’m patient while waiting in the usually hours-long weekly rations line, letting little old ladies cut in front if need be; I offer what extra time I have to coworkers low on their quota; I even give any extra rations to the neighbors if they're struggling. If you need a favor, I’m usually on the top of people’s lists. But this is where I cross the line.Back before all this shit happened, you could watch all of those reality television shows, “90 Day Fiance,” “Married at First Sight,” “Hell’s ...

Miriam steps down the steep, narrow steps of the concrete apartment building her Airbnb is in. Her huffs, echoing through the stairwell, remind her to take up exercising again. She had made the trip up the stairs two nights ago with her small suitcase but can’t remember if the same thoughts had crossed her mind. Perhaps her old memories of the area were distracting enough to ignore the strain put on her body, but she thinks that she should be used to being in her 50s by now. Body and muscle aches are just par for the course. Pulling the fro...
