What a day ! I thought that having my clock stop and my alarm not going off was not a good start, but when Mr., Haroldson said that being late was once too often and that I was to consider myself as starting my two weeks dismissal notice, I was completely shocked. While it is true that I was less than enraptured by the computerized book keeping which was my job at Haroldson and Hilbury , I thought that I did what was required of me. However, according to Mr. Haroldson , I did it When I Arrived and without the dedication of a true professiona...

Michael had gone to bed at ten but he had not been able to sleep. He had lain on his back and rerun the day's events over and over, then he had spent an hour or so turning from side to side until the bed was in total disarray . Finally, he had got out of bed and walked to the window, through which a beam of moonlight was illuminating the room well enough to make out all the furnishings. He stood looking out at the full moon and the gentle, clean cloak it spread over the town. Everything appeared softer, without hard edges. The definition see...

Mandy stood in the kitchen trying to decide whether to have toast or cornflakes for breakfast, then thought it made more sense to first hang out the wash she had done last evening. The more sun and wind it got the better, although there was a likelihood of rain later, so perhaps she would wait until she returned from her part time job at the print shop. She enjoyed her job. People just put their items in the copier and she made as many copies as they required, then handed them back their master copy .....nothing to decide, no choices to make...

''Richard !'' ''Yes Margot ?'' '' Fetch my book and glasses from the bedroom...I'm bored with this movie. If this simpering little mouse ducks her head and says ' If you please Sir. ' one more time, I might throw this lamp straight through the T.V. screen ! '' '' Well Margot, it is a period piece....eighteen hundreds or something, and that was how a well brought up young lady would have behaved.'' '' Well, I don't have to watch it. Turn it off. You have the remote on the side table.'' '' O.K. '' '' What happened ? '' '' I don't know. '' '' W...

How does one befriend a Receptionoid ? Or more to the point, how does one make conciliatory gestures to the confounded thing ? I am employed at the law firm of Gambol , Gambit and Gore, one of their thirty six lawyers who slave away for seventy hours a week to make...an admittedly good...salary and try to impress Gambit and Gore, Gambol having departed this earth five years ago. Earlier this year, those of us working on the lower three floors were issued with the latest model receptionist in the form of an android. We were told that our secr...

''Steve ! Steve ! Will you put these confounded golf clubs in the garage, or the loft or somewhere ? I am sick and tired of having them fall out every time I open the closet !'' Amanda pushed the hair back off her face as she stood the golf bag upright and stuffed three or four clubs back into place. ''Sorry love, but I can't really put the clubs away, I still want to work on my swing, but I haven't had much time lately.'' Steve said as he descended the stairs. ''No, not since you took up fencing.'' Amanda said in an ominously quiet and reas...

Anne put down her book,it was pretty boring. Most romance novels were entirely predictable, she thought, and wondered if she really felt in the mood to read on for a further one hundred and fifty pages to the inevitable blissful kiss. She got up from her armchair and walked over to the window and drew aside the heavy dark red curtains. It was still snowing. It had been falling since lunch time in large, heavy-looking flakes. The porch light showed how deep it was piling up on the deck railings. Pretty. Pretty worrying too if the snow plough ...

"Good morning Darling." "G' morning." "Did you sleep well ?" " Just not long enough." " Ah, Tibby ?" "Yes, Tibby. That cat had me up at 6.30. Bad enough on a week day. She didn't really want anything when I got up. I think she just likes to see me up and working....like the humans around here." "Coffee smells good." " Coffee always smells good....help yourself, there's plenty perc'd." " Thank you love. I'll just toast a couple of slices." "Oh, no full English breakfast ?" " You're not offering and I'm not cooking," "Saving your appetite for ...

It was a long trip, Bob thought. He didn't remember where they were going. Was it his boat , or was he sailing with a mate ? Ha ha, joking in his head with no one to get the joke, pretty feeble joke though...sailing with a mate ! Was he the Captain, the mate or a member of the crew ? He was definitely not a paying passenger because he was positive that they did not expect or allow paying passengers to climb up the mast ! Did they expect anyone to climb up amast in this day and age ? He certainly remembered clinging to the mast and swaying r...

DAYLIGHT ROBBERY The day began like any other, the bank had no more and no fewer customers than any other Thursday in 2020. There were two tellers, a middle aged man and a young woman. The manager sat at the end of the counter where he was able to deal with routine enquiries, only retiring to his office when there was a confidential matter to discuss with one of his clients. The door opened and a masked man entered. " Everyone on the floor. I have you covered." he said. There were one or two titters of polite laughter and the others groa...

I have been a Pirate for seven years now, It came about almost by chance. I had lived within the law up to that point, no angel bur never charged with a crime and certainly never taking a life. My pal Jake was always a bit wild, never vicious, more in love with excitement and adventure. We were both fishermen working out of a small harbour in Cornwall on the South West coast of England. We made a living, just not a good one; not as good as Jake thought we could make if we joined the crew of this captain he had met , by the name of William Bo...
Jim was not feeling too good. Not too good at all. What had they put in his drink ? When his mother said that they should do away with the tradition of a stag night, she knew what she was talking about ! He had planned to drink very little and leave as early as was polite, but someone had spiked his wine and he really did need to pull over before..... He gulped and swung the wheel towards the side of the road, opened the door and extricated himself from his seat belt as speedily as he could, then he half ran and half stumbled to the barrier ...

It all seemed so simple then. I was finishing my grade twelve studies and I knew exactly what I wanted to do in life. I would go to university ( my grades were good ) , when I had my chemistry degree I would get a job in research and lead a useful working life, while taking care of my supportive husband and two children. I don't think I gave much consideration to money or home, but no doubt I assumed that would all take care of itself; just as balancing the needs of my family and my career would not present any difficulties. ...

I have always loved Halloween but it's going to be different this year. It's going to be really different this year. From a very early age it was my favourite time of the year, Christmas was great , with all the presents and treats , but it was Halloween that I looked forward to most of all. When I was small I think my parents simply draped a white sheet over me and cut holes for eyes and I was happy telling everyone that I was a ghost; then as I got bigger the costumes became more elaborate but always I wanted to be a ghost. My elder sister...
