Within my peripheral vision, I see lights blazing. I set my book down to the ground and move over to the window. I watch as the sparks set off like fireworks and smoke rising from the flicks of fire. I watch as the large gray bricks fall down from the clouds and hit the ground with a BOOM. I see the auto-planes tilt down and the robos squash building between their toes. I call for my Dad but hear no response. I climb up the stairs with each step taking more breath from my lungs. As I touch the doorknob, my hand's rumble as it turns. I creak...
“I was born in 1994. My mother is a nurse, and my father is a professor. I was never meant to be anything great. I wanted to be an engineer. That was my goal in life: go to college, get an engineering degree, and become an engineer. That was the plan. But then he decided to throw a wrench in my perfect dream. As a solo cruise tourist, please select if you are open to having a roommate. “I’m kinda doing this to get away from people,” I mutter to myself. “My family has been so stressful lately. I just want to get away. I hit submit. We apologize, but there is no room for you left. You may either reschedule or select the roommate option. “Ah, come on!” I slam the desk. I flop my head in my hands and tightly squeeze my hair between my fingers. “Fine.” I hit the check the option and hit submit before I overthink the decision. Two days. Two days till...
“Why didn’t you show up?” She strolls over to me. I hold back my eyes from rolling. She’s holding up her sparkly golden purse and swirls her white dress a little bit. “To what?” I ask as politely as I possibly can. I dig my clenching fist into my jeans to hide it. “To your baby shower of course! Oh dear, I told you about it weeks ago! When, where, who. I gave you all the information.” She lets out a laugh as if I messed up and forgot today. “I remember that call.” I try to smile politely. “I told you I had work and couldn’t come. I’m abou...

I hear the lights flicker off and the door shut. I count to one hundred and then slowly sit up. My bed creaks, and I freeze for a second. Then I continue to get up and tip-toe over to my window. I slowly open it while attempting to be as quiet as possible. I push the screen out and take a deep breath. I step out the window onto the roof. I get out and climb up to the top of my house, and lay down. For a moment, I close my eyes. I feel the breeze and take a deep breath to smell the salty air. I hear the waves crashing against the shore...
