“What I saw made me realise that things need to change. Not for me, I’m out now, I managed to escape the system, but for everyone whose still there, who will be there.” I sighed and ran my fingers through my long blonde hair. When I got out of there, I almost danced towards you, but then I looked back and saw Jill watching me and waving and I knew, she wasn’t getting out anytime soon. Ellie sipped her coffee. Americano with two sugars – just as she liked it. “You should say something, what happened to you must happen all the time, it does h...

For Jo If I hadn’t been honest then I never would’ve ended up here. People say honesty is the best policy, me, I say honesty is over-rated. “Be real about how you feel and we can decide how best to help you,” they tried to convince me. Only (true to form) I was snarky with the psychiatrist and then they locked me up. Not my finest hour. However, when someone asks you, “Why did you walk into the lake that night?” in a totally serious voice as if this a reasonable question, I think, “Because I fancied a swim,” is a justified response. The ...

Faeology I looked around, fascinated. There was a mix of ages, some clearly over sixty with greying hair and bright eyed smiles, some, judging by their outfits, clearly students. One girl had the shortest miniskirt I had ever seen, it was dark green and denim and was definitely more like a belt. She wore it with a black cardigan that reached nearly to her ankles and was laughing, joking and pouting with her friends as they posed for selfies. Other girl wore jeans that were more rips than whole teemed with a hectically patterned red and pur...

"Forgive me Father, for I have sinned." The words echoed around my head like a squash ball ricocheting off the walls. "Forgive me Father, for I have sinned." "Forgive me Father, for I have sinned." "Jacqui? Jacqui?" A gentle shake to my shoulder. "Forgive me Father, for I have sinned." "Jacqui?" more insistent this time. The rosary beads threaded between my fingers and the candles cast gentle shadows around the church. "Forgive me Father, for I have sinned." "Jacqui?" "You shouldn't shout in church," I rebuked the person behind me, who, for...

Spatula Gate Okay, so I threw a spatula at him. In fairness, he deserved it. A wooden spoon probably would have done less damage, but that was at the bottom of the washing up bowl; a knife probably more (too far away) - although maybe not with the accuracy level of my javelin style rage. The spatula happened to be the thing I was washing up at the time, the metal handle light in my hand and silver body covered in fairy washing up liquid and the odd bit of stray carrot. I flung it on the spur of the moment, more in exasperation really th...

"I didn't know what else to do," I admitted, not able to hold my sister's gaze. I twirled a strand of my long blonde hair around my finger. "I never should have gone along with it.""Why?" I could imagine the colour draining from her already pale face, a face that would be marred with confusion and her eyes welling up with tears. That's what I was sure I'd have seen, if I'd been brave enough to look at her face. Which I wasn't."I promised," even I could hear the pleading justification in my voice. Back then, I'd felt pushed into a corner. I h...
