The door in Grandpa’s study was old and green, carved wood spun in intricate details that seemed too ornate to hold anything other than something extraordinary on the other side. I peeled open the curtains that clung heavy with dust and squinted. Morning light was filtering in through the kitchen window despite a persistent cloud’s attempts at casting it aside. The dust falling in spirals onto the counter was just another thing rarely touched in our cemetery of a house.
