The rain battered the bright yellow umbrella on a brisk Tuesday night, placing Lettie in a trance. Rain is rare in Southern California, but when it came it was beautiful. Lettie stood with closed eyes and inhaled the saturated asphalt smell that filled the street. She could never get enough of the rain. But she had a job to do.
