The wind howled, and I could barely hear the chime of the door as I pushed it open, making my way inside the small supermarket. My head was pounding from a night of drinking, but what else were you supposed to do? My shift at the station had ended last night but had been stuck in town when the blizzard rolled in. Alright, I may have gotten carried away, and now I was paying for it. I moaned slightly as the door clicked shut behind me, and I looked up, squinting at the bright lights overhead. They flickered off for a second but came back to ...

She was at it again. I turned over in bed and tried to get back to sleep as I heard the occasional clunk of something bumping into a wall somewhere in the house. Something else made a bumping sound. You would think a telekinetic would have some better control. As a third bump sounded through the house I sighed and opened my eyes. Clothes were floating across the room, out the door, and down the hall. I sighed again and threw the covers aside before standing and stretching only to have a shirt fly into my face. I pulled it to the side grumpily...

I cracked my knuckles as I looked around the kitchen. It was 7:30pm.“Alright,” I said to myself. “I've only half an hour, better hurry.”Of course, anyone who cooks knows there’s always a couple of things you need to really be able to get into the mood. They’re a little different from person to person, but I prefer a small snack to nibble on (like olives if I’m making pasta), and some music you can dance to.It took me a minute or two, but my speaker got turned on, my phone connected, and soon a good beat was going. That’s the stuff.I swayed m...
“I’ll be home in a bit,” I called over my shoulder as I walked out the front door and shut it tight behind me. No sooner had I stepped outside than the chill wind pulled at my coat, the collar flapping a little. I hunched my shoulders as I stepped carefully down the front steps and started toward the store. It was only a couple of blocks to get there, but I was by no means enjoying myself. The snow had piled up a bit higher than normal this year and the plows had managed to push a decent amount onto the sidewalks so it was slow going.I kept m...

My armor clanked against the stone under my feet, and echoed down the dark, brick corridor, lit by the small torch in my hand. I had to make a choice; left, or right. I swore quietly at the silence around me. He couldn’t have disappeared so suddenly.I brought the torch low and moved it across the ground. The floor here didn’t have that much dirt or dust on it, but if I could only find it… there, a footprint, or half a footprint really, in just a small amount of dirt leading left.I’ve got you, I thought satisfactorily to myself, a small smile...

The sound of something hard, like bone, grated against my ears in the darkness of the underground car park. We were three floors down and I crouched behind a parked car in the mostly deserted space, only a few lights were left flickering, making pools of darkness in which the monster could stalk us, but remain unseen.God, how did we get here? It had seemed like such an ordinary day, my girlfriend Rachel and I had been going to the movies, I hadn’t really been paying attention, mostly absorbed in her. We didn’t get to spend a lot of time toge...

It’s a bad feeling, being stuck in a confined space with a stranger, knowing that you literally can’t leave or you’ll probably die. Sure, I could get out of the car and try to walk the rest of the way, but it was 7 degrees outside, and we were in the middle of the highway, granted all the cars were stopped, but I wouldn’t be able to see more than three feet in front of me. With my luck, I’d probably walk off an overpass.I’d spent the first hour of the drive with my earbuds in listening to music, but it had died a few minutes ago, and I didn’...

The lights were almost blinding as I made my way into the ballroom. I squinted past them, and let out a soft gasp. It was beautiful. The lights sparkled off the glassware and tinsel streamers that were strung between the stone pillars. A warm light suffused the room bouncing off of small silver stars had been hung from the ceiling and slowly spun on their almost invisible strings, giving them the illusion of simply hanging in mid-air. Almost like magic, but not quite, I thought to myself. The people too were everything I had imagined. The ot...
