The sun glittered through the trees as a figure moved from shadow to shadow. The scent of the nearby sea mixed with the damp odor of moss and dirt. Raindrops from the previous night’s storm dripped off the tree branches and sparkled in the patches of sunlight. Tentatively, a hand reached into the light to catch the water. Five slender fingers rolled the droplets between them, causing them to spiral into a sphere of water the size of an acorn. Caedis ran through the empty streets of the partly destroyed port town. Cold air filled her lungs and dried out her mouth. The moon cast a ghostly glow behind the clouds and stars peeked out where the sky was open. During the event of a global pandemic, local governments encouraged citizens to remain in their homes for the duration of a quarantine. While this posed a problem for in-person events, the modern age of technology allowed for socially-distanced friends and family to virtually come together in order to keep each other sane. On a Saturday night, five avatar icons glowed green as their owners joined the online call to arms.

“Librarians Are Magical” by Cheyanne Turner

Wordsworth Silvertongue library was the biggest library in the county. Thousands of books lined the shelves which filled the two story building to full capacity. Sunlight poured in through the windows and warmed the Adult section on the top floor. Saffrin rubbed her temples as a patron’s shadow slithered off her desk and followed its owner towards the stairs. It moved like smoke that never rose from the ground and left everything it touched cold.
