Everyone was scared of something, growing up I had two things that I was terrified of.The first was Her.She had Her house on a dead end. The street started out normal enough until you got to the last few houses closest to Hers. The houses had been abandoned ages ago. Sickly weeds that were barely alive managed to cling on to life long enough to wind around metal pieces of junk that were strewn haphazardly across the abandoned lawns in disarray. The pieces were so ancient and rusted that no one could have even speculated what their original p...

She just wanted to go home. Was that too much to ask? Daisy scowled as she was one step away from entering the Spring festival grounds. The… loud and crowded festival grounds. If the paths to her house weren’t flooded she would have ran away. She clutched her purse tighter and closer than she would have ever needed to on her way home in the woods. People were wearing bright pastels that swished as so many ran and danced to the music. Nearly everyone was wearing flowers in some way shape or form, crowns, sewn on dresses, t...

Liam took a long last sip out of his slushy as he and Chris left the theatre. It was eleven, the sky was dark and looked like it could rain at any moment. The smart thing to do was call a cab to take them back to the house. “Let’s walk back,” Chris suggested. “It’s not that far and we’ll get home quicker than a cab.” Obviously they were not doing the smart thing. Liam sighed, tossing his drink into a trashcan. Normally five minutes would be wasted arguing in a cab or walking, but it was too late for that. Liam sighed. “It’s a ...

Alice wanted to curl in on herself as she sunk into her chair. She tugged her hair out of stress, a bad habit she needed to stop. People always talk about how moving to a new place was difficult. Alice liked this town, but lately… Lately she felt as though she were seeing things in the corner of her eye. Things like flowers going from buds to blooms in mere moments, but that was probably the wind. She also felt vines wrapping around her legs when she walked along the sidewalk. But she was sane! Those things were tricks of the light o-o...

Words have far more power that we give them credit for. Sure we talk about the power of words all the time, but it’s the small things in words that give them the power. You don't say ‘hey’ to a person who is interviewing you, and you wouldn’t normally say greetings to a good friend. The way you pronounce a word also plays into it, how formal you plan on treating someone, how close you are to a person. Goodbye’s, Farewells and see you laters are all so different. There was a heavy paper envelope in my hand. Excitement buzzed deep in my bone...

All the gods had their breath held in anticipation and fear for Premysl. The tricky spirit came and left like the wind, laughter following them like blown leaves. April fools was coming up, perhaps one of the worst (or best) inventions of the mortals. Minor spirits enjoyed the small holiday, a time of laughs and good jokes among friends, but the gods had reputations to uphold. And upholding reputations got increasingly harder as one is known for being dyed pink with red spots, or poisoned to talk backwards. But the day had been quiet, peac...
Isaiah always got hurt on april fools. He sometimes thought it would be easier to just go to the hospital first thing and ask for a full body cast. It wasn’t as though it was on purpose, it was always an honest (and extremely painful) accident. Someone doused him in water mixed with soap, it was all very congenial until he slipped into the street and got hit by a car. Cracked ribs and heavy bruising. Three months in the hospital. Another person was hiding in an alleyway and jumped out in grade A makeup pretending to be a zombie. He was...

“See the birds?” My father would ask me, pointing out our window. “That’s the first sign of spring. They’ve come back to join my little blue bird.” He teased and ruffled my hair. I think I took spring for granted then. Just a pretty season where flowers began to bloom, a symbol that summer would come and school would end. Dad never took a spring for granted. Dad liked kites. He spent his slow days figuring out how to best make a kite that could catch the smallest drifts. He would dust off his kites from the long winters they spent on the...
“You're gonna be in trouble!” Zagreus crowed pointing at his sister. “What’s going on here?!” They heard their Mother roar storming into the garden. Z gulped and took the reasonable action of treating his mother like a bear and raised his hands above his head to give him height. “Grrrr.” Percy rolled her eyes, her eyes narrowed when she saw Mack covered in dirt. She was biting her shaking lip with tears beginning to form. Percy’s eyes drifted to her garden where there were pulled up plants and disrupted dirt and trod on flowers. “Z, go i...

What was the date? Lara paused her typing for a moment. She looked at her calendar, it was the fifth. In June. When did it become June? She stopped her work, stretching out her back hearing several pops caused after sitting in the same position for so long. Lara stood and went out of her room taking large steps to avoid piles of dirty clothes in the hallway. She made her way to the living room and sat on her couch with her legs folded in an attempt to try meditation. It was supposed to help your mind relax or something. Plus sh...

Liam was wrapped in several layers of heavy coats, pants and scarves on his way home. He was so cold. Liam had been transferred from his cozy job in Texas to an “upgrade” in North Dakota. There was a small party with cake. He remembered an off hand comment where someone told him it wasn’t that cold. Liam really wished he knew who it was so he could punch them. Liam’s shaky hand reached for his key in an attempt to unlock the front door. Once the door was unlocked he had to shift his full body weight just to open the door that was held i...

Jael began setting the table for dinner in the quiet night. He went to the shelf that lay in the far end of the room, plates were stacked neatly and a tablecloth sat at the bottom. He grabbed the tablecloth and began to lay it over the table. He dutifully smoothed out the old table cloth running his hands over old patterns. The table cloth had been a wedding gift for them and had shone beautifully with red and gold leaf designs. Now the colors had faded from their original vibrance and it was covered in stitches where he or Azalea ha...
Isaiah had planned to ask out his crush that day, Addison Myron. She had the cutest short haircut that bounced up and down when she was happy and freckles that pronounced her green eyes. He had met her during the school musical. The school was doing The Addams Family and he had lost his voice trying out for Lurch . She had gotten him lemon tea to heal his voice. It did help eventually, but he was stuck as an understudy. Isaiah walked up boldly with his chest stuck out proudly. It was valentine’s week and the school’s plastic hearts gave hi...
Percy remembers the first date her husband took her on. They were teenagers then, he was quiet at the time and spoke with a stutter, his eyes constantly flickering to the ground asking her if she would like to go on a picnic. The place he had chosen to go was next to a river with green flowing grass and wildflowers that bloomed wherever they pleased. She laughed thinking back on it now, the entire week had been gray with solemn clouds slinking over the village. Of course a thunderstorm had happened on that day. Hadeon had given her his c...

Zillah sat at the table holding an old pack of letters in her hands. She continued to trace every indention on the now yellowing papers listening to a crackling fire that was lit in the room till she heard two people pull out chairs. "You said you considered our proposition?" She heard her mother say. Zillah nodded looking directly in both of their eyes. "I have." Never tearing her eyes away she opened her mouth again. “You can keep your f---ing offer and both of you can go straight to h-ll.” Her mother sucked in a breath and her fathe...
