“Mom?”“Hi, honey. I’m just out grocery shopping right now. What’s up?”“Nothing, I just wanted to hear your voice. It’s been a while.” “Oh, alright then! It’s good to hear from you, too. What are you up to?”“I’m just working on something in the garage.”“Ah, Hiding from the kiddos, I see. When I had you my go-to spot was in the closet under the stairs. I loved you and your father, but you were up 24/7 and I needed a little mom nap sometimes.”“Yeah, the kids are with their father at the park right now. I told him they needed some fresh air...

I sat atop the door steps, allowing the last of the sunlight to wash over my face as the sky filled with dark, beautiful pinks, purples and oranges. A deep sigh escaped my chest before I stood up and entered the battered house, sliding a chair in front of the door right after. “Ey, Dotty. You’re on first watch.” Rayna said, laying on the couch with her little hunting knife on her chest and her curly, black hair dangling off the side of the couch's arm. “Yeh, alright. You coming, then?” I said, gesturing towards the stairs. “I jus...

I stood there, gagged and handcuffed as my captor explained the rules. “Behind me are 2 doors. We’ll call them the easy way and the hard way.” He began, pulling me by my shirt to look at the doors. “Behind the easy door there is a room. It has a chair and a rope. Hanging is a quick and easy way out, guaranteed to be less painful than anything you’d endure in the second door.” He spoke in a calm, sickening voice like he’d said those words hundreds of times over. “Moving on to the next door. The hard way. This door leads to a stair...

Charlie Higgson, Boss of this branch of Diebold, inc vending machines, lay back in his chair with his feet resting on his desk and his eyes glued to the office clock. He’d been waiting months for April first to arrive, the entire office knew it. They also knew his pranks bombed every year, such as last year where he tried to saran wrap the toilets. He had done it the night before so the nightly cleaning crew took them off and the only reason the staff found out was because Charlie came in all huffy and stompy that day. This year ...

The light shone through my kitchen window as I poured myself a cup of tea. The first sign of warmth and brightness this year, it was nice. I missed the feeling of the sun on my eyelids. The entire winter had been drab, the sky grey, with about a foot of snow and constant hailstorms making it awful to go outside. I rinsed my cup and put a light sweater on before stepping out the door. Today’s as good as ever to take a stroll. It was late enough in the season that the world didn’t give off that muddy vibe. You know the one, where t...

As my heart pounded against my chest and my eyes began to blur I knew this was it. My lungs burned and my head felt as if it were going to explode. As whatever was wrapped around my leg pulled me deeper into the water all I could do was imagine; imagine the way my life was, what it could have been. the mistakes I made and all the people I had hurt, that had hurt me. I could feel my entire body loosen and I felt weightless. The last thing I saw was a blurred human-shape swimming towards me. As darkness clouded my mind my life flashed be...

It was a cold, crisp autumn morning. The crunch of the leaves under my boots and the sun gleaming through the trees filled me with euphoria. As I sat on the cold, metal park bench a familiar auroma had drifted through the breeze. The scent of cinnamon filled my lungs and as quickly as it had arrived my blissful glee had disappeared. My hand tightened around the park bench arm holder and my eyelids clenched shut, once again forcing me to think of that day I longed to forget. As my vision cleared I sat in my old kitchen, feel...

As per usual, my day started off with me waking up at 6:30 on the dot. I got out of bed and threw my curtains open to let the sunlight wash over my room. The warmth on my face and the sound of birds chirping was a lovely wake up call. I quickly got dressed in my favorite, bright green shirt and leggings. I opened my door, quietly, trying not to wake anyone. When I got into the kitchen I was pleasantly surprised to see that the kettle was already on. I grabbed a teabag, put it into a mug and poured some water in, leaving room for honey ...
