Daniel lifted his Queen and dropped it with satisfaction on b7, noting down ‘++’, otherwise known as checkmate. Daniel breathed a sigh of relief that the game was finally over. What would be his final match seemed to go on for eternity but he could now, finally, pack away the chess pieces. He scooped them into his hands and into the chessboard which also formed as a case. He really thought that chess would be his thing, a hobby that he could finally stick with. But once again, he became bored of the repetition. Instead, his chess set ...

Johannes gazed out the window, the glare of his eyes penetrating through the thick veil of snowfall. He held his hands behind his back which pushed his chest outwards, giving him the appearance of being larger than he actually was. His eyes remained still, as though he were locked in a daydream, but his mind was alert, scanning for anything out of the ordinary. Nothing had come for days, but this only made him more conscious. He knew that their enemies would not give up, they were far too stubborn for that. Instead, they would be plotting,...

The water splashed against the bowl of the sink, racing around the plughole and teasing its edges until finding itself slurped into the hole. They were also the most beautiful thing about the school. Staring into the portal was like staring into a nebula, it’s different shades of dark purple swirling around each other like velvet clouds, and it was easy to imagine the clouds wrap...

“Great. Bloody great”. Anthony exhaled with his cheeks puffed and lips ever so slightly open, so that the air came out slowly with an audible huff, while pressing his index finger against his left eye and his thumb against his right eye, slowly sliding from the outside of each eye until both fingers connected at the bridge of his nose. He glanced towards the television, hoping for some miraculous change to the news. But it was still the same. He placed his hands on his hips as he watched, once again, the presenter reporting that his town wa...

“Are you there?” Alice wondered as she sat cross-legged on the grass. She did not notice her skirt being drenched by the wet grass, or the ice-cold breeze causing her legs to shiver. The whole of her attention was instead focused on spotting a specific star in the sky. “There seem to be more stars in the sky than when we were last here, I thought you might be one of the new stars.” Her eyes darted between the millions of stars, looking for the brightest star in the sky, which she felt had to be her brother. Her head craned forward on her ne...
