"Wake up! You're going to miss the school bus again!"

I fell off my bed with my brother holding my messy ponytail. I grabbed my hair and jerked it out of his hands.

I turned to him and spoke through gritted teeth, "Thank you for waking me up."

He rolled his eyes and went to my door, "It's no fun with you not yelling at me."

He grumbled and stomped to the kitchen. He was so annoying. All he wants is a reaction. I slouched to my door and closed it. I messily put on some jeans and a hand-me down light blue t-shirt. I put my medium length hair in a braid and tugged on my dirty tennis shoes. I speed walked to the kitchen and got hit by a sudden burst of frosty air. The house was freezing. I turned to our thermostat but remembered it was broken. I ran to our heater on the floor and cranked it up. Feeling the heat start to rise in the room I grabbed my backpack and ran out the door. I barely caught the bus. I went to the back seat and felt my eyes droop. I got woken up by my best friend Harry when he sat next to me. He looked at me, smiled and gave me a bagel.

I looked at him and said, "How did you know I didn't eat breakfast this morning?"

He dug in his backpack and said absentmindedly, "I could hear your stomach growl a mile away."

I chuckled and rested my head on the glass falling asleep again. Harry shook me awake and put the bagel in my mouth. I nearly choked but bit down on the soft bread and chewed contently. Harry always got me breakfast on the day's I didn't get to eat. I still haven't figured out how he always knew when I did or didn't eat. When I finished off the bagel we were entering the school parking lot. I went to reach for my backpack and lunchbox. I was so stupid. I forgot my lunchbox. And the only thing I had for money was ten dollars in change. I groaned and got up. Everyone shuffled off the bus and went to their first class. Morning went by in a snap. It was the usual surprise test with Mr. Yacht and we had to watch a national geographic about some important person with Mrs. Petal and then there was a very boring study session with Mrs. Umer. When lunch came everyone swarmed the halls. I was the last one out of class and the last one in the halls. I was walking down the hallway trying to get my notebook in my backpack when some guy bumped into me and left me sprawled on the floor. I sighed and sat up. My stuff was everywhere. My pennies and dimes were marooning the floor and my notes and notebooks flew out everywhere. I got up and started to pick up everything. I was so busy picking up my notes that I didn't realize Harry was helping me out. I got spooked and fell to the ground again.

Harry looked confused, "You scared the crap out of me!"

I complained while rubbing my tailbone. He smiled and held out his hand to help me up. I grabbed it and saw that my notes were once again on the floor. His smile was my favorite.

"Well guess I'm going to skip a meal."

Harry shook his head and started picking up the coins everywhere. Before 5 minutes had passed he picked everything up and put it in my backpack. I looked at him with astonishment and grabbed my backpack. We both ran to the lunchroom. Harry sat by himself at a table while I went in line. I was the last one there so I got the last of everything which was a mushy fruit cup, a soggy subway sandwich and a crushed up milk carton. It took me a while to pay the lunch lady with all the counting I had to do. When I finished lunch was halfway over and I hadn't even started to eat my food. When I sat down at the table Harry was reading a book.

"Shouldn't you eat lunch? It's almost time for fourth period."

"I already ate, you were at the lunch counter forever. Better start eating or you are not going to finish it."

I looked at him and at my sandwich, "Like I'm going to eat all of this."

He shrugged and pushed the tray more toward me. I sighed and started eating. Harry is always so good to me. I wish I could be like that to him but my life is a mess. I am constantly doing stuff at home. He usually comes over and helps me out with my chores and when we get done and actually try to watch a movie or something I either fall asleep or have to do another one of my brothers chores.

Harry just looked at me for who knows how long.

I looked back at him and said, "I'm fine. Go back to reading your book."

He still looked at me for a bit but eventually went back to his book. When I finished some of my food I went to the trash and dumped it. Harry was already standing up ready to go wherever I went.

"You know you don't have to follow me around. You should go do some sport and hang out with the other boys. You just get made fun of when you hang out with me."

"Yeah like anyone would approach me."

He had a point with his black hair and hazel eyes people tended to find him creepy. Which was unbelievable to me because he is the most caring person I have ever met.

I sighed and asked, "Do you want to walk a small trail before we go to class?"

He shrugged, "Sure."

As we ran to the trails at the end of the football field we stopped at the fork in the trail, "Well which way is it?"

"I don't care. It's your choice."

I looked from side to side getting a bad vibe from the right path, "Let's go on trail to the left."

As we started walking I saw a long pole looking thing with stripes. We walked towards it and saw that there were train tracks. Looked like it was from prairie times or something. We looked around and saw that the trail continued onto the other side of the track. Me and Harry looked at each other and continued walking.

"Be careful where you step you could-"

Before he could finish his sentence I tripped over one of the train tracks and almost face planted. My backpack zipper wasn't fully zipped and my coins came flying out.

He looked like he was about to laugh but held it all in with a smile, "Uh yeah you could fall."

Dang I loved his smile.

"You think?"

Harry helped me up for the second time today and started to pick up my coins. That was until we heard a whistle. The train tracks started to vibrate. I looked at Harry and he looked mortified. He whipped around and sure enough a train was coming our way at a fast pace. Harry picked up some more of the coins and started to drag me but my shoe lace was stuck on the wood in the middle of the tracks. I started to tug at my shoe lace. But the train was getting closer and I was in the center of the train tracks. I started to panic and knew that I had to ditch the shoe. Harry was starting to yell. Which was unlike him.

"Elena get over here! You can get another pair of shoes! Come on!"

I pulled off my shoe and stumbled to Harry. We got flat on the ground and waited for the train to pass but instead heard a big crash with pieces of metal and more metal rain down on us. We looked up and the train was upside down and barely holding itself together. Me and Harry stood up slowly. Harry yanked me to look directly at him as he started to inspect my arms. I looked into his eyes. They were full of fear.

"Hey. I'm okay."

He looked at me with eyes full of concern. I could see my eyes reflected in his. My brown eyes almost clashed with his. Then he did the most shocking thing ever. He leaned in and kissed me. It only lasted a few seconds, short and sweet then he pulled me into a hug. It was probably unhealthy how giddy I felt but I somehow managed to contain it. When we separated we both looked at the wreckage caused by a little thing on the tracks. A bent penny.

Sorry the proof read wasn't that smooth. But thank you for liking my story. Writing and reading romances are really fun.😁
