        Follow Him

Suzanne Marsh

“Follow him, you are being tasked to find Sergei Kosmonov, then stop him, is that clear Agent

Hamner? He is not only a Russian spy, who has gathered information for years, but

has a contact in New York City, where he also sends the information to his superiors. I

can not reiterate how important it is to stop him now.”

Hamner had his assignment, it was time to move on it. He began by looking at files the CIA kept, the more he knew about Kosmonov the better, it would make his job easier. The man they called the “chameleon” was a man of many disguises, it was up to Hamner to find him, follow him, and arrest him quietly if possible. The photo attached to the file showed a man with black firey eyes, and blond hair, just beginning to thin, a ser m, a purposeful man. called a cell phone to a friend who is that worked in Interpol. Interpol, Hamner knew was also pursuing Kosmanov. The cell phone rang several times before a voice answered:

“Hello Andrew, have you got several minutes?”

“Yes, Timothy, what is it you require?”

“I have the assignment of tracking Sergei Kosmonov, thus far I have nothing, he certainly

is not here in the US.”

“Timothy, when he is on his way to Israel, the Mossad is keeping a close eye on

him. I spoke to Aaron this morning, apparently, our friend Kosmonov is posing as a

Rabbi, black hair, beard. We believe he is going to be flying into the US in the next

week. We have no idea what he is after in the US. We think perhaps the Russian Embassy

in New York City, New York. That is where you should be able to pick up his trail. Be

careful, he is a very dangerous and devious man. I must ring off now but I will be in touch

the moment he leaves Israel.”

Mossad agent Levi Horowitz slid silently into the shadows near the Russian Embassy in Tel Aviv. He knew that the longer he followed Kosmonov the more likely either Kosmonov would disappear once again or surprise him and kill him. Kosmonov entered the Russian Embassy on Hayarkon 120. He moved quickly to the entrance. The door was opened by his superior:

“Kosmonov, why are you hear? You are supposed to pick up information about the

newest nuclear weapons the US has. We require that information.”

Kosmonov, never good at explanations:

“Sir, I am being followed by the Mossad, who are in communications with the US. If I am

caught, this whole operation will be for nothing.”

His superior thought about that:

“Come in, we will give you a fake passport for a Rabbi, we can dye your hair black, give

you a false beard, even your own moma would not recognize you.”

Kosmonov knew his superior, once his mind was made up there was nothing to do but do the assignment to the best of his abilities. He entered the foyer, and the men went upstairs. His superior showed him to a room where every type of clothing could be found. He pulled out a black suit, found a white shirt, black shoes and socks. He took those items into the bathroom, there were several different colors of hair dye. He selected black, found different length beards, then began the transformation of Sergei Kosmonov to Rabbi Iszak Rubinovich. His superior entered, smiled:

“Da, good you could easily pass for a Rabbi. There is a plane ticket, with the Rabbi’s name

at Tel Aviv airport, you leave tonight for New York City. Once there you will go to

Washington D.C. your contact will meet you at the airport. She will have further

instructions. Do not get caught, if you must use a cyanide capsule. Good luck.”

Sergei, left the embassy with Horowitz following in the shadows. Horowitz, followed Sergei into the airport, noted the flight he was on. Found a quiet room in the airport and made his call:

“Aaron, he is getting on a plane for New York City disguised as a Rabbi.” He quickly disconnected the call. He knew the Russians tapped lines at the Mossad from time to time. This was one phone call he could not allow that to happen. Later that evening Aaron phoned Andrew at Interpol:

“Andrew, our friend is on his way to New York City, New York from there we do not know..”

Andrew Smythe smiled as he thanked Aaron Moscowitz for the information. Andrew in turn phoned Timothy Hamner:

“Timothy, our mutual friend is now portraying a Rabbi, traveling to New York City, New York.

We believe he is on his way to the Russian Embassy in New York City. He must be stopped.

I have spoken to special agent Ray Stutz I believe he is the agent in charge.” Good hunting

Timothy, keep me posted on your progress.”

Tim clicked off the call and then headed to John F. Kennedy International Airport, hoping to catch the Rabbi before he set foot in the USA. Traffic was heavier than usual as he proceeded toward JFK, he thought as he drove:’maybe I should tail him to the Russian Embassy and see where he goes from there, hell if I do this correctly I could shut down the entire operation.’.

He parked his car, then strode toward the entrance glancing around to see any person with a black beard and dress in black with a white shirt. They're coming down an escalator from El Al was Kosmonov, he was sure it. He waited patiently as he came through customs, then followed him out of the building. There he entered a black Lincoln limo, Kosmonov glanced just as Tim ducked behind a newsstand. Tim waited momentarily, then proceeded. He was stopped by Gregori Romanov:

“Tim, has been a long time no?” Time smiled he had worked with Gregori before:

“Yes it has Gregori, is there something I should know?”

“Da, there is Tim, we are also seeking Sergei Kosmonov, he is how you say, double agent.”

Tim, his blue eyes widening:

“Gregori, he can’t be, he has been sneaking out intellingence reports on nuclear weapons.

He can’t be a double agent, or can he?”

Gregori his dark eyes penetrating the blue eyes that stared back:

“Da, if he goes to the Russian Embassy, they will kill him. He is my friend, I must

warn him.”

The two men strode toward Tim’s car, he knew he could trust Gregori since he had been partnered with him on several cases. They followed the limo three cars behind, attempting to keep it in their sight. The limo stopped at 9 East 91st Street. Just as Kosmonov was climbing out of the limo, they heard a shot, he staggered to the ground; mortally wounded. The two men had not been able to rescue him, now Tim found himself who was responsible for killing Kosmonov and who had ordered his execution.

Tim reported back to special agent Ray Stutz:

“Ray, Kosmonov is dead, he was executed by the Russians, Gregori informed me; was a

double agent. So why was I following him?’

Ray took a deep breath:

“You know I can’t answer that Tim it is on a need to know, however I can tell you that Gregori

was correct, he was a double agent, and we are still intent on breaking up this ring. We need your

help in doing so. I will be in touch.”

Tim, stopped at his favorite bar Red Rose’s for a beer, it had been a long day.
