First Date Disaster
During the summertime, we had vocational bible school at our church. I was in the tenth grade at the time when I befriended a boy named Terrence. Terrence was tall, light complexed and had curl sandy hair. I like him from the start not because he was good looking but because he was so funny. His mother Carol and my mom Brenda were good friends when they were going to school together. The two thought it would be cute for their kids to start dating. At the time I thought it was a good idea too. Terrence was such a gentleman and was so nice to me. One Thursday afternoon me and Alyssa were hanging out outside the church sitting on the sidewalk, Terrence came up and sat beside me.
“Hey,” said Terrence. “ Would you like to go to the movies with me tomorrow night?”
I stared at him in disbelief that he had asked me. I closed my mouth for a second and gave him an answer.
“Yes,” I said. “ What movie are we going to see?”
“It's a scary movie,” said Terrence. “I think you'll like it.”
“Okay,” I said.
“I'll come get you at 7:00 pm,” said Terrence.
“Alright,” I said. “I'll be ready.”
I was so excited. I had never been out with a boy before. My mother picked me up from church and I couldn't stop talking all the way home.
“Goodness,” said Mother. “Are you okay?”
“Yes, I said. “Terrence asked me on a date tonight.”
“That's nice,” said Mother.
I didn't want to wear anything to dressing because after all it's just a movie date. When we got home, I helped mom straighten up the house. My little brother Taylor was running around like a mad man saying he was superman with a towel around his neck as a cape.
“He's so annoying,” I said.
It's true what people say, “Time always flies when you are doing something.” I quickly jumped into he shower to wash away all the sweat and dust from the day of cleaning the house. I decided to wear my acid wash blue jeans, pink Madonna t shirt and pink and white FILA sneakers. I put the finishing touches on my hair with Spritz holding spray. The 80's was a time for wild bright colored clothes and big tease hair. I sat on the couch in the living room looking out the window. Terrence had a black and gold 1984 Camaro. His brother Tony had given him the car after he went to the Military. As I looked out the window, I could see Terrence car pulling into out driveway. I jumped up off the couch and opened the door.
“Hey,” I said.
“Hey yourself,” said Terrence.
My mom stepped into the room with my little brother underneath her arms kicking and screaming.
“Where are you all going?” asked Mother.
“To see a horror movie,' said Terrence.
“Alright,” said Mother. “Curfew is at 11:00 pm.”
“Okay,” I said.
Terrence opened up the front door so that I could go out first. When we got to his car, he opened the door for me. I was so impressed. He turned the radio up loud and we preceded to leave out of the yard. My mother peeped her head out of the door with a frown. I knew when ever I got back home she would surely have something to say about him playing his music so loud. It was quiet ride with smiles and holding of hands while he drove through town. It was so hot and humid earlier in the day. Now that the afternoon was upon us, the cool breeze echoing from the sweltering heat of summer was so enticing. Terrence pulled up tot he stop sign near the entrance of the movie theater. I was surprised when he passed complete by the road.
“Hey, what are you doing?” I asked.
“I got to make a stop by my cousin house to pick something up,” said Terrence.
“Will this take long?” I asked
“Na,” said Terrence. “Besides the movie doesn't start until after 8:00 pm.”
“Okay,” I said.
We kept driving until we cam upon a dirt road. There on the left was a small gray and white trimmed house. There were a lot of old cars upon blocks that sat in the yard. Two huge black pit bulls dogs ran out of house. When they saw Terence, they both stood in place. He got out of the car and patted both dogs on their heads. The dogs followed him up the steps into the house. Terrence stayed in the house a good fifteen minutes before he appeared out of the screen door with a tall, muscular built man with large gold chains hanging from around his neck like a rapper. Terrence and the man fist bumped and he came back to the car. I was puzzled as to what type of house this was, but I didn't say anything. We got to the movie theater and went inside. The movie house was packed full of teenagers. We went to see Texas Chainsaw Massacre. People were screaming and the movie wasn't that scary to me. Terrence put his arms around my shoulders and I leaned in underneath his arm. He kissed me upon the lips and I kissed him back.
“I got a surprise for you later,” said Terrence.
“What is it?” I asked.
“You'll see,” said Terrence.
He gave me a wink and we continued to watch the movie to the end. It was 10:00 pm and I was so glad that I would make curfew so I wouldn't have to hear my mothers mouth. We got into the car and started to drive off from the theater. There was a place called Old Johnson's Landing that a lot of the kids at school would talk about going to make out. It a secluded place in the backwoods and there was a large street light that had been put in about two years ago. Terrence pulled in right underneath the street light. He turned the car off and I slid beside him in the car. I thought we were going to make out, but he had other plans. He got out of the car and went into his pockets and pulled out a zip lock bag. It had a couple of funny looking pills inside. He got back into the car and popped three of the pills inside his mouth.
“What is that you're taking?” I asked.
“Something to relax me,” said Terrence. “Do you want one?”
“Hell no!” I exclaimed. “I don't take drugs!”
“You ain't cool then” said Terrence. “If you want to be with me you'll take one.”
“Ain't taking shit!' I screamed. “You can take me home!”
“Fine,” said Terrence.
I slide back over to my side near the door. It was a quiet ride home. When we pulled into the yard he tried to get out of the car.
“I don't need you to walk me to the door,” I said.
“That's cool,” said Terrence. “I didn't feel like walking anyways.”
“Good bye!” I exclaimed.
I slammed his car door and got my house keys out of my purse to go inside my house. The idiot screeched his tires as he pulled out of the yard. I opened up the front door and on the couch sat my mother watching TV.
“How was your date?” asked Mother.
“It was terrible,” I said. “Mom, he's a drug addict.”
“He's a what?” said Mother.
“An addict mom,” I said. “He got mad at me for not taking drugs.”
“You don't need to see him anymore,” aid Mother.
“I wasn't planning on it,” I said.
I gave my mom a kiss on her cheek and went to my bedroom. I could overhear my little brother in his room snoring away. I changed my clothes and put on my night gown. I grabbed my diary from underneath my mattress and began to write about my horrific night. I was a little disappointed because I liked Terrence for along time. Then when we finally went out, he wasn't the terrific guy that I had imagined that he would be. It didn't take him long to start parading around with another girl after me. I wondered if she was taking drugs just to be with him too. I'm so glad that I wasn't pressured into doing something that I didn't want to do. He wasn't worth all the trouble to lose myself worth over.
