Time and time again, he remained calm and docile. Letting the scientists around him poke and prod and give him any series of injections that they desired. If he didn't struggle, he'd be safer. At least? That's what he told himself. He was all but five years old when then nightmare began. It had been may unknown years of torture. All he knew was that he started puberty last year. He was doomed to be a test subject for all of his life. It was like some fate worse than death. He wished most days that he could just die from something already, as it would be much less painless that way. But alas, he was still alive. Perhaps a part of him fought so strongly to stay alive because it meant he could be the only one; the only one who'd have to suffer this kind of malice from these people. They were interested in him, after all.
That's what he thought and that theory was proven when a young girl was brought into the lab, some sickly looking girl who was put into the cell right next to his own. His head tilted curiously. The guards called out to them to have a good night, but this girl was unresponsive. He felt pangs in his heart for this girl. He greeted, "Hi. I'm Sonnet. What's your name?" Again, she didn't reply. Her eyes were glazed over, as if she was drugged which manifested more fear and worry.
"Were you captured, too?" Sonnet tried asking, but all he received back was silence, not even a single movement or twitch. He requested as he became scared for this girl, "Hey, please say something. Anything. Move something. Show me you're alright." But she didn't... She sat as lifeless as a doll. What had they done to her? That night, Sonnet sat awake to watch over her and as soon as one of the scientists entered the room in the morning, he yelled "What happened to this girl?!"
"This is what makes you lively? A subject on the brink of death? Tsk. She's an orphan who's terminally ill..." the scientist started, but Sonnet was having none of that and he shouted, "HOW DARE YOU SAY THAT?! She has a life! This isn't the right way for her time to end! You're heartless!" The teenage boy felt pure rage building up within him. A type of rage that had always been there, but he kept it within him. Now someone else was around and that someone else was far weaker and younger than himself. If he didn't show these bastards how he truly felt now, when would he? If he could prolong someone else's life, that would mean something to him. Even if his life was unredeemable and horrific, at least he made an effort to save another human being. He made the determination then and there to let his rage manifest. He was going to be malicious without mercy so he could attempt to save this young girl's life. If this rage led him to murdering these awful scientists, so be it. That was worth detainment if this girl could see the light, and know that not everyone was the worst human being to ever exist.
Not long, Sonnet's cage was opened and he was yanked out of it, which was a massive mistake on the scientist's part. The boy swiftly grabbed a scalpel knife and used all his anger to stab the man holding him in the neck and racked the knife along his skin. Blood spewed out, splashing Sonnet, and pooled onto the floor. Sonnet had just killed a man... an evil man who experimented on humans. He'd had enough. This ended here and now.
The boy glanced at the cage with the young girl within it and smiled at her. He promised the silent, stature-like girl, "I'll save you. I promise. I'll save myself, too. But I'll save you. I'll call you... Destiny. That is, until you can speak again and tell me your real name." Sonnet grinned at the girl before going to stand behind the only door to the laboratory and wait. He'd wait for more scientists who have wronged him come in to check on the children, but they wouldn't be making it very far.
Sonnet's next victim was someone who had never been terrible to him, but he wasn't playing around. This man still held him down and obeyed the cruel orders. So? As the man came into the room, Sonnet made his move; stabbing the man's arm which caused him to shout. The boy took a chemical compound that was within reach and threw it at the man. A bloodcurdling scream was heard escaping the scientist. They continued until the man's face began to bubble and melt off and he fell to the floor. Another person came into the room to check on the situation, but Sonnet was prepared with a syringe in his other hand now. He thrusted the needle into this scientist's skin and shoved the plunger down. He cried out, telling the boy how this will kill someone and he shouldn't be reckless, but that was the whole point; to kill someone with it. Sonnet could only think to say, "Good." Another scientist down.
After two more victims, there was an alarm now sounding off, causing Sonnet to look up. Other people must have been hearing these screams. He didn't think about that possibility. He had only been thinking of other ways to kill people for some time now. He was completely unaware of any time that had passed.
Suddenly, a gasp and coughing caught the boy's attention and he snapped his head back to the cages. The girl! She was responsive! Sonnet ran over to the cage and she looked terrified. The boy was covered in blood, so that made sense. There were also dead bodies laying all around. He introduced as he worked to get the lock off, "I'm Sonnet. Do you have a name?"
"N-no... I've always lived in the orphanage... They never gave a name," the girl admitted and he frowned. Sonnet insisted then, "From now on, I'm going to call you Destiny because without you being around, I would've never have fought back with these evil people. THERE!" The lock popped off and Sonnet offered Destiny his hand. She admitted, "I can't walk... I was told there was no hope for me, so..." The girl began to cry which nearly made Sonnet cry.
"I'm your big brother now! How about that? And big brothers save their little sisters from danger. Okay?" Sonnet boldly claimed. He went into the cage himself and picked up his little sister. He warned, "Hang on tight. I'm going to be running so we can get out of here."
"Okay... Sonnet. Your little sissy Dessi will listen," the little girl tired to say. It made Sonnet giggle. He repeated her new name, "Destiny. You'll get it. I know it." The teenager ran out the lab door and down the hall as other people were also running for their lives thanks to the blaring alarms. He heard many people screaming about a fire. This was actually the perfect opportunity to make a full run for it. They could find somewhere to live together and be a little family together. Maybe this terrible past could be something they truly leave behind. Sonnet could only wish.
He made it outside with his little sister and continued to run, his legs not wanting to stop. His mind was telling him he couldn't stop either. Destiny asked, "Where are we going, big brother?" He admitted, "Away from here. We'll never be hurt by people ever again. Okay? No more evil scientists or crazy doctors or people holding us down. We can be free." Destiny cheered, "Yay! Sonny and Dessi can be happy!" Sonnet laughed and replied, "Yeah. We will be."
Sonnet's legs began to really hurt and he was finally slowing down. Thankfully, they were inside a forest now. A forest with a creek.... He headed up to the bubbling waters and set Destiny down and he fell to the forest floor, panting roughly. He'd get water soon enough. For now, all he cared about was the fact they were finally safe. Releasing that rage of his did something good for someone else and he'd never regret it. No matter what.
