The Fourth World
Suzanne Marsh
“Majee, we have to get off of the second world now. We will evaoporate at the end of this
season. I have found what looks very much as our Second World looks but less
volitile. I have a small ship waiting to leave NOW!”
“What if I don’t want to leave Calper? It would mean leaving everything I have every
thing I have ever known.”
“Majee, if you don’t leave with me now, you will cease to exist. Termination.”
Majee, her one blue eye and one green eye tearing up as she thought about not being any longer. Calper pulled her to him:
“We will leave tonight. The fourth world will be better than what we have here.
Now go and get what you will need for the trip. I know there are no real family ties
here for you. We can start our life together in a new and better place.”
Calper, left Majee to get her things in order. He hoped that he was correct in assuming that the Fourth World would be a better place.
Midnight was nearing when Calper heard Majee approached the ship he had acquired. She wanted to understand why he had ship that appeared to be an old battlestar:
“I acquired this Majee for less than 5 splain it was very reasonable. There are others
that are fleeing with us, most are already on board. You and I are the last ones to board.”
“How many sitons are we from this Fourth World?”
“About ten sitons, we have hibernation chambers that we will use when the time comes.”
“I see” she answered dejectedly.
The old battlestar took off immediately with over one thousand souls on board. They circled their earth for one last glimpse of all they had held dear. Shortly thereafter they entered the hibernation chambers, for a long peaceful slumber.
Time stood still for the one thousand people on board as they crossed milleniums. Several days before their arrival at the Fourth World, they were awakened and began to prepare for the landing.
They waited for word that their small voyager ship would be allowed to land on the Fourth World. Finally, word came that one half of fractions would allow them to land the other faction would not. This was a dilema for all aboard the Ty, since they were running low on fuel. The left faction told them to land on their side of the Fourth World. This sounded rather strange to Calper and Majee; they could not comprehend how this world functioned. There had to logic in order to govern any world.
They landed on the right faction’s pod; they were welcomed as any visitor would be. They thought perhaps there was some sort of logic to their landing on the right instead of the left. Their world had been one of logic and beauty. The Fourth World was certainly not beautiful and there seemed to be no logic, emotions ran high throughout the land. They could not flee the Fourth World simply because there was no fuel to go further. They were marooned here for better or worse. Calper, thought perhaps if they showed the left and the right that logic worked better than emotion then beauty would follow.
Calper requested to be taken to the leader of the right, a man by the name of Gramin. He was informed that Gramin would see him in a seaton.
“Ah, you must be Calper Swanton, I am pleased to meet you at last.”
“Thank you, sir. Thank you for taking us in. Our planet was destroyed we are the only
survivors.”
“You are safe here, but you must remain on the right side of Fourth World. Do not
cross to the left for any reason.”
“Yes, sir.”
With that Calper was left to walk out of the great room himself. Majee, had waited quietly in the shadows for Calper to return.
“What did he say Calper? Can we stay?”
“Yes, but he had one steadfast rule: we can never go over to the left Fourth World.”
“That doesn’t sound so bad Calper at least we are safe.”
“Are we?”
Majee, knew from the tone of his voice; he was not going to remain on the right side for long. She wondered what would happen if he did venture over to the left. She would know soon enough she decided.
Calper waited for several seatons before we strolled gradually over toward the left. He kept to the shadows so no one would observe him. The more he moved into the left area the more he sensed that something here was very odd. Everything was the reverse of the right area. He overheard two men arguing:
“I told you that was my cart. You keep your hands off of my things.”
“I told you that cart was mine! I demand you return it.”
“I will not!”
“Oh, yes you will”
Their emotions became more heated as their voices rose. Suddenly he heard a scuffle, he peaked around the corner. There stood a protector of some sort:
“Now look, you two have been battling over this cart for setons, now you will go before
the tribunal. They will decide.”
That quieted the men immediately. The tribunal was a threat to anyone who did not abide by
the rules of the left. Calper decided to leave just then. He once again hid in the shadows until he was sure no one was around. He then returned to the right. Majee, waited until he entered the room they shared:
“Calper, what did you discover over there on the left?”
“It wasn’t good; they have arguments in the street over simple things like a cart.”
“Do you still think it is wise to go over to the left again?”
“Majee, I am going over there again. I think that for the most part the left is not run by logic it
is run by emotions. There must be a way to resolve the mess with the right so we can all
“Calper, what if they don’t believe what you are saying? They could hurt you bodily.”
“I will be safe, Majee, don’t worry about me.”
The following day, Calper followed the shadows as he had done before. However, this time he was not that lucky. A protector noticed him among the shadows:
“Who are you? What are you doing here? I am taking you to the tribunal immediately.”
The anger rose in the protector's voice as he said emotionally:
“World Four left does not want visitors. You have intruded on our space.”
Calper realized his mistake immediately; the question was how he was going to rectify it and live to tell the tale. The protectorate looked down at Calper with tears in his eyes:
“Why are you here on the left of World Four? Did they not tell you that was forbidden?”
“Yes, but I do not understand why?
“Your greatest folly is that you don’t understand.”
“Here we are governed by our emotions, long ago, we were not like that. Logic had a
place in our world. Now it is emotions. I will allow you to return to the right but you
must stay there. Now I think I will have a good cry for being nice!”
Calper found himself staring at the protectorate; he now understood where emotions played a larger role in left than in the right. He wondered if the right side of the brain was using some form of logic; the left side using emotion. It made no sense to him other than his hypothesis.
A day later Calper returned with the protectorate to the right Fourth World. The advisor met them in the great hall:
“Calper, where have you been? Majee has been scared and worried.”
“I have brought the protectorate of the left; he wishes to have peace.
