Fiction Speculative

This story contains themes or mentions of mental health issues.

You did it again, didn't you?

Did what?

You know damn well what, you had to go and do it again!

No I didn’t, you did.

What? Are you five years old now or something?

You know we’re the same age.

I can’t believe your selfishness…you really are the bane of my life. Come on now, why did you do it?

You were asleep.

So…what? You just take any opportunity to become an animal?

I have needs.

Your needs keep wrecking us. Did you even take precautions? Of course you didn’t, silly question. You don’t care about us. You don’t care about me.

For better or worse you’ll always be a part of me.

So now you're being funny, are you? Who was it this time? No, don’t tell me, I can imagine…yes, some blonde bimbo dripping in diamonds and pearls…that’s how you like them, isn’t it?

You know me too well.

Why? Why did you do it? You said the last time would be the final time. You promised.

This is the final time.

Your words mean nothing to me. Not anymore.

You really want to know why?

Yes! Tell me!

I’m sick. Sick of you…and your dominance. I loathe the face you present to the world. So normal, so…respectable. You make me feel like an aberration, not an equal. That’s why I replaced our medication with Tic Tacs.

No! You did–

And as I gained control I was able to go out and sate my primal urges. And no, I wasn’t careful this time. Not careful at all.

No! You’ve brought the wolf to our door! The police are here! You planned this! You wanted to get caught! We’ve literally going to be caught red-handed!

I’m not. You are. I’m giving you control, Mark. Johnny boy will sit this one out,  sleep this one off while you rot in the slammer.

No! Oh God no!

It’s what you've always wanted isn’t it Mark? Now you can be one man. A convicted murderer, but one man. No more John. Aha! Hear that? The fuzz have busted in. Enjoy prison Mark, goodbye!

Armed police! Get down!

No! No I can’t! Let me–

What the hell was that?

Sounded like a gunshot!

Jenny lock the door, I’m calling the police.

Hello, 999 what’s your emergency?

We just heard what sounded like a gunshot coming from next door.

Your neighbor's home?

Yes, I think so.

What’s your name, Sir?

Matthew Dobson.

Okay Matthew, you say you heard a gunshot?

Yes, it definitely sounded like it!

What’s the address?

44 Milford lane.

That’s your neighbors address sir?

No…shit. Sorry we’ve 44, neighbor is 43 Milford.

Okay sir we have a car coming right now. Sit tight and only answer the door if it's a police officer that comes to call.

Okay, thank you, goodbye.

I’ve locked the door. What did they say?

They have a car on the way over.

Thank goodness. Wait a minute…

What?

Luke’s a police officer.

Who’s Luke?

Our next door neighbor! Matthew you really are the sociable one aren’t you?

Well, I’m always at work aren’t I? Know this Luke well do you?

I’ve spoken to him in passing…you're not jealous are you!?

Of course not! But…a gunshot in a policeman’s house? I hope it's not a domestic!

He’s single, he said as a detective inspector he didn’t have time for relationships. Hmm.

You talked to him about his relationship status? Is there something I should know Jenny?

Oh come off it Matthew! I was just saying how we don’t see much of our neighbours and bla, bla, bla and it just came up in the conversation…its kinda what us women talk about!

Okay, let’s not make a big thing about it…unless…

Unless what?

Well we have no idea what is going on next door…a gunshot! A policeman huh? It could be a revenge attack! Or maybe he’s a depressed, lonely man and he…

Hmm…

What is it Jenny?

The other night…I’d come home and I passed Luke outside, I said hello Luke and he didn’t answer me at first, like he was lost in thought…he said something about liking my blonde hair, then he got in his car and left. Seemed odd at the time but then I forgot about it.

I hope the police get here soon.

Mark you idiot! You nearly killed us!

It wasn’t me, John. It was the Policeman. And he didn’t break in here, that was all in my head…our heads, our head.

What are you saying?

I’m saying the only place the Policeman broke out of was our head…our medication…I thought I was suppressing you…

You were!

We were both being suppressed. Your stunt with the tic tacs…made us stronger.

What!?

Don’t you understand John? The Policeman is the dominant one - we’re subordinates! Weak figments!

And I thought you were the dominant one!

So did I.

Wait a minute! If he’s the dominant one, how come I’ve killed before?

Don’t ask me! I’ve never been there. Maybe we can ask him. Do you feel that? It’s like he’s knocking on the door.

I don’t like it.

Relax. Let him surface…

I’m…Luke. What have you done?

I’m Mark and it wasn’t me, it was John that messed with our medication.

It’s John that kills the women isn’t it?

Yes. It's me. What I’d like to know is how did I have control long enough to do it twice before?

Sometimes…I drink. I drink too much and I black out. I’ve cleaned up your messes before; it wasn’t hard, I’m a detective after all, but this…this is too much.

You have to try Luke! We’ll go to prison otherwise!

Listen to yourself Mark! What does it matter? He’ll get his meds and we will be relegated to the background. It's Luke that will suffer behind bars!

We have blood on our hands and we discharged a firearm…

And unless I’m imagining things again that is definitely a police siren I’m hearing!

Well Mark and John, this is the end of the line.

You're not saying what I think you're saying Luke?

Don’t worry Mark, he won’t kill us…were just going to dissolve into the background, like I said before.

On the contrary gentleman, that medication John got rid of…its an extremely powerful drug and its not prescription…good luck avoiding prison explaining this…the best you can hope for is a secure cell in a nut-house. I’m going to, as John put it, fade into the background. Enjoy being cell mates for the rest of our mortal life. Goodbye.

Armed police! Get down!

No! No I can’t! Let me–
