Karma

John. He was my sister's boyfriend. I didn’t like him much. He seemed to be so evil, but Leiani really liked him, so I just let it be. One night after her date with him she came home crying. 

“Leiani! What happened? Are you okay?” I asked

 Leiani was hysterical. She couldn’t even talk, she was crying so much. I sat her down on the couch and turned on Stranger Things, then I went to the kitchen and got her favorite ice cream, vanilla, out of the freezer and gave it to her. Her blanket was already on the couch and when I came back she had already wrapped herself up in it. I left her alone for another minute so I could get her most comfy outfit and makeup wipes for her room. When I got back to the living room she had calmed down some. I told her to go change and take off her makeup. She did as I said and went to the bathroom. I sat down on the couch and rested my head in my hands.

What happened? I thought, what could he have possibly done to leave her this upset? I knew he was trouble from the start! I should have spoken up, but then she might have resented me, I thought to myself. Leiani walked back into the room wearing her favorite sweatshirt and sweatpants. She sat back down on the couch and wrapped herself back up into her blanket. She stared at the TV for what felt like forever.

“Rose.” Leiani said.

“Pardon me?” I asked. We sat in silence for another minute before I realize what she meant. Rose. Leiani’s best friend. They have known each other since 3rd grade and were practically inseparable. They had been with each other through thick and thin and almost had a better friendship then I did with Leiani. “What did Rose do?” I questioned.

“Not Rose, John. He only used me to get closer to Rose. He told me he never meant it when he said “I Love you” and that everything we have ever done together was all just to get closer to Rose. He never even liked me slightly.” Leiani pushed out. She was on the verge of tears as I reached over to grab her. She cried in my arms for a while then recollected herself. “Where is mom?” she asked.

“Another late night shift.” I said. Recently our mother and father got a divorce. Dad was always gone on business trips and made lots of money for the family. On one of the business trips however he met a beautiful brunette woman with green eyes, Madeline. The two had an affair and now Madeline  is pregnant with my half brother. She was really wonderful and such a delight, but no way on earth would she ever take the place of my mother. Dad still sends more and more money to help with all of the bills but mom still has to work and is often really late to get home. She has a good job that she enjoys working at a space center out in town. However she just started and is working really hard to get a promotion so she isn’t around here very often anymore.

All of a sudden there was a knock on the door. It was late at night, almost midnight, so I really didn’t know who it could be. I opened the door without checking through the peephole and next thing I know I had been shot with a tranquilizing dart. I looked up from where the person had shot me and I recognized who it was. John. I tried to land at least one punch but I was too weary. Everything got fuzzy and then suddenly everything was black.

I woke up tied to a chair. I looked around and realized that we were in Leiani’s room. Leiani, where is she? I looked around the room t but couldn’t see her. I wiggled my hands and then felt a chair behind me. That must be Leiani. I tried to wiggle loose from the ropes but they were knotted too strongly. 

“Well well well.” John said. 

I didn’t realize it at first but then I knew. The sound of his voice made my anger rise. How dare he do this! He was going to pay for what he did to my sister. Even worse he takes us hostage in our own home!

“Hello girls. Leiani, what happened to you? You look like a wreck.” John said evilly.

“What do you want you physico?” I asked.

“Now now, no need to be rude. I just stopped by for a little visit.” 

He walked in front of me and put his hands on the side of my chair. I leaned back, repulsed at even the thought of looking at him. 

“Madison, what seems to be the problem?” he asked.

“Don’t you dare say my name with your filthy mouth.” I said firmly.

“Dangerous today, aren’t we?” he said. He stood up, then slapped me across my face. I almost screamed, but then realized that I couldn’t give him the satisfaction.

“Do it again, I like the pain.” I snarled. 

He got in stance and acted as if he were going to again, but then stopped before reaching my cheek. 

“Calm down, you don’t know the damage I can do.” he whispered in my ear.

He walked back over to Leiani and turned her cahir to where she was facing my back then turned my chair so that I could see Leiani’s face. She had a large cut of her face that wasn’t there before. 

“What did you do to my sister you freak!” I screamed.

“Madison, now that is no way to talk to your guest.” He said with a sly smile.

“Madison please, I’m okay,” Leiani said.

She gave me a comforting look but I saw the pain behind her eyes. John walked behind me and I mouthed to her that it was going to be okay. John noticed and laughed.

“Oh really Madison, is that what you think. And who said you could communicate with your sister?” he asked. He slapped me in my face again and Leiani started crying. As I looked back at him I smiled. He looked confused but then moved my chair again, this time up against Leiani’s night stand. He then moved Leiani over to her dresser. As he pulled her chair up, he accidentally knocked down her Japanese doll Aunty gave her. That is when I got an idea. Leiani brought the scissors in her room to cut the tags off of her new dress for tonight. While I was getting her ice cream out I saw the scissors were missing. That must mean that they are in her room. But were they on the nightstand or dresser?

I got my hands on her dresser and felt around. Finally, I felt the scissors. I warped my fingers around the blades. I slowly drag them off the nightstand and cut the ropes which held my hands behind my back. Once I finished those, I cut the ropes which held my back to the chair.

While I was working, John was talking to Leiani. He was recalling every memory of the two of them. Telling her how he never meant it when he told her he loved her. How he hated being around her. How she made him sick. Apparently he wanted her to cry before killing her.

“John! Why don’t you come pick on someone tougher than you!” I shouted

“Tougher? Really? We will see about that” he said as he walked over to me. He slapped my face again.

“Do it again.” I said. He did it again. “Again” I said. He did it once more. I was about to say again one more time when he punched me in my face. Blood started coming out of my nose and mouth. He looked me straight in the eyes.

“So, are you really tougher than me?” he asked.

I smiled then laughed like a maniac. He looked scared and slowly backed up. 

“Come here, I have a secret to tell you.” I said, still laughing. He came forward, but only a little bit. “Closer.” I said. He looked at me and then came closer. “ Kiss me,” I whispered. He looked surprised but leaned in all the same. Right before his lips met mine, I stopped him. He looked confused then I slowly whispered, “Surprise.”

I stabbed him in his side. The scissors were immediately covered in blood. I pulled them out knowing the amount of agony he would be in. He screamed and so did Leiani. I cut open the ropes which tied my feet to the chair and then cut through Leiani’s ropes. Her instant reaction was to help John, but I told her to call the cops. She wouldn’t at first but finally gave in and went downstairs to grab her phone. While she was looking for her phone, I took off my undershirt and tied it around his stomach to stop the blood from coming out and picked him up. I carried him down the stairs just as the ambulance and police arrived. 

The ambulance took John off to the hospital and the police led me and Leiani out of the house. They questioned us about what happened and we told them everything. Our mom came home about five minutes after the police finished questioning us. She was so scared and thought that I would end up going to jail. I honestly wouldn’t care if I did, I fought my way out of a hostage situation so I don’t think I did anything wrong. When my mom asked the police what was going to happen to me they just said nothing. I was right. I was using self defence to get away from John. They told us John got a 10 year sentence. At first I was super happy, but what was going to happen to Leiani when he got out of prison?
