The air was cold against my exposed skin. I couldn’t feel my fingers inside my flippers.
its October 31st, 2019 I’m 13 years old and walking around in a duck onesie. I don’t care about all the stupid glances or off-handed remarks about my appearance; I feel better than ever. Honestly, I think I feel more at home now than I have since I got here. I am on my estate and I’m walking around with my best friends looking like we have just escaped from some kind of backward zoo. There’s me a duck, Bianka a frog, Chloe a penguin, Clare a flying squirrel, Elli a unicorn, Fenna a sloth, Kate an elephant and Sophie a giraffe. As I always say being old and acting young is much better than being young and acting old.
We all had matching bags that had our animal's faces on and Fenna was carrying a sign that said ‘the zoo’ on it. It was about 9pm and the Texas night sky was already pitch black leaving only the street lights to guide us. The estate that I live on is relatively new but there were rumors going around that there is one house right at the back that had been here for longer than even the wise old oak trees that littered the pavements. The only problem is that it allegedly only comes out on ‘all hallows eve’ or in modern terms Halloween; that was the mission that we had. Our supplies were loaded into our little bags, and we set off singing stupid Halloween songs from the movies we had been watching. The estate was massive and unlucky for us we couldn’t all fit on my one skateboard and my older brother's bike so we all decided to walk together.
As we neared where the house was supposed to be a sudden chill washed over us, well an extra cold chill as it was already too cold for some of my friends that weren’t from England and didn’t have to walk through most of their lives. Besides that the entire scene changed when we took the next couple of steps, the fog started to roll in and everything seemed to collapse in around us. “Woah this is so weird” Fenna muttered “guess we found it,” Bianka said the edge in her tone clearly visible in her voice.
As we proceeded all the age-old trees that I saw every day started to wilt and the sky turned from black into a shade of red and orange. The road was cracked and overgrown and the houses turned to rubble, the silence made your bones shudder and a tingle rush down your spine. “This looks like something out of a scary movie I swear,” Chloe stuttered “whoah there my guy” Kate said in a joking manner “no need to get too into this.” We rounded a corner and towering over us was the house…
4 stories of wooden old-looking walls cracks and shattered windows; the life looked to be sucked out of it. “This looks like some old banshee type stuff,” Bianka said a genuine fear in her tone. “It’s going to be fine B we’re all here for you don’t worry,” this seemed to calm her down as we walked up to this house. The door looked rusty and like it was about to fall off its sharp hinges. “Odds on you knocking,” Kate said a slight laugh left her lips. “Kate this ain’t no joke,” Sophie retorted “fine I’ll knock.” Kate walked up to the door a shake in her hand as she knocked.
The door creaked open and stood there was an old woman with blood coming out of her eyes, her pupils were solid white. Her torn dress fell down to her knees and her hair was a bushy mess, little spikes of green stuck out from all over.
“WELCOME TO THE BIGGEST HALLOWEEN BASH OF ALL TIMEEEE!” she yelled her voice slurred as if she was drunk. Lights lit up from all places and music blared from hidden speakers. Yes, I thought, she is definitely drunk.
We stepped in the house was a straight-through type, the pool was full of less than clothed people from both genders. “Whoah,” Chloe said; “I think we know why parents make children avoid it,” Fenna said. “Aye, and I’m pretty certain this is our queue to leave,” Elli said. “Maybe we can stay a little, PG the party up am I right,” Kate said.
And you know what, that is exactly what we did.
