Splendid day already, and it's only Seven o'clock. It wasn't always this easy in New York for Mark. Only since this year, the best year ever for him, finished high school at last and got a job. It's not a big job, but it's a first job, and he loves it. We all have A thing that's getting us out of the bed. That's his getting out of the bed thing. Mark's Walking to the bus stop like every other day of the week. He's in the big league now anything could happen or go wrong in any kind of way. He's not in Kansas City anymore. Today started like every other day, but today will change his life forever. He doesn't know it yet he will find out soon enough.
An all-boys school is the only thing Mark is used to. That's why he's not Ferris Bueller when he's speaking to girls his age. The Timex was so Popular for the guys the same age as Mark. Most of the time when he's walking he gets lost in his mind, just floating in space swimming from one idea to another. Snap out of it and look at the watch. Flipping burger I'm late, says Mark out loud.
Back from the fairyland, and started running. He finally gets there, after the bus. Lucky for him, an old lady is trying to get in. Pete, the driver is just sitting there looking at his Timex, waiting for her to get in. Mark's a good boy, so he helped the lady in. She took a seat in front of the bus near the driver. It's always the same driver, and Mark started a game with him a few mornings ago. Morning Ralph, Mark calls him Ralph like the cartoon character in the Saturday Morning show. The sheep watcher Ralph and Sam. The driver calls him Sam, morning Sam.
Mark sees an empty seat in the back. Every morning Mark Haim for the seat way back where no Man has gone before. As he starts walking, to reclaim this empty seat. It's precisely at this moment that his eyes cross her path. A beautiful Girl with brown hair and big Brown eyes. They both lock eyes as Mark passes by. Mark's sure it was Love Touch by Rod Stewart playing on the bus radio. Actually, it was the song Danger Zone by Kenny Loggins. He passed by her without saying or doing anything. She smiled at him, and he replied with a dubious look on his face. Once seated, talking to himself, I should have smiled, should have said hi, what a jerk I am. Just as he's complimenting his way of flirting. A big guy gets in, wearing a red and black Micheal Jackson jacket. He's talking to all of the girls trying to sit next to every one of them.
Mark jumps out of his seat without thinking, and Rush to the seat next to the Girl. Just as the big guy arrives at her side. Sorry, the seat is Taken, Declares Mark with a stupide laugh at the end of his sentence. The guy stood there for ten seconds, Mark felt like an eternity. Our anti-hero is more of a book guy, not the sporty muscular type. He thought to himself, that's it, I'm done, love you mom. He really thought he would die right here in front of that pretty girl whom he didn't even know the name of. The big guy didn't even bother and took a seat in the back.
The girl looks at Mark and says, thank you. Mark looks at her and doesn't know what to say he just wears a stupid grin on his face that won't go away. For the past few days, Mark was the first at the bus stop, before the old lady, before Anybody. He sat beside her every time he could. One morning he got on the bus, and a woman was sitting beside her so Mark had to find another seat. Smile at her as he passes by. Two stops later, the woman got up, and Mark jumped in the seat as fast as he could.
Then one morning, as Mark sat down she Said something, good morning. Mark smiled. He could not believe that he did not say a Word, that was his chance. A chance of a lifetime, and he froze. A few days have passed and Mark has not yet spoken to her. But today is the day, he's gonna Say hi. Like all other mornings, he arrives early at the bus stop and gets on the bus with a big smile like a kid in a toy store.
He pulled up to her seat lifted his head, and Said hi. She's not There, it's an old bearded Guy sitting in her spot replying to him, hey. He Looks around and doesn't see her anywhere. So he went back in the back, thinking about all the things that could have happened to her. The next morning Mark hopes to see her, the second he is on the bus he hears a Nice soothing voice. He looks Up and Sees her face, the prettiest face a girl can have. So now Mark not going to let passe his second chance, so he starts talking. He's baffling out the Words he's too nervous. She smiles at him, the more she smiles, the more he puts his feet in his mouth. Mark can't believe that after all this time he still struggling to speak to her.
She starts laughing more and more as Mark gets his feet down His throat. She finds that so cute. To calm him down she puts her hand on his thigh it's ok, you're so cute. She says with such ease. Mark feels the redness fill his face. He gently put His hand on hers. After that Mark was in the zone. He Was talking, telling stories, asking good questions and she was laughing Starring at him with Heart in her eyes. For fifteen minutes Mark was flying. It was the best time of His life. And she had her head in the clouds. This is my stop, says the young girl. I have to go. I won't be there for a few weeks I will be out of Town. I have to go, what's your name? Mark, I'm Mark. And she runs out of the bus. Mark has so many questions so Little Time. Mark put his head out of the Window and asked. What's your name? The bus starts rolling away, and she yells, Evelyn. My name is Evelyn.
Two months have passed, and Mark is Alone on the bus, sitting where she used to sit. He never saw her again after that perfect day. He knew he's never gonna see her again, but she gave him something before she left. Something, he didn't notice at first. She gave him the confidence to talk to strangers. He finally breaks free from his shell. when he sees a girl that he wants to talk with. He thinks about her almost every day. All he has now is a memory and a name,
EVELYN.
