Breaking News!

It was the first day of school and Pam couldn’t wait to send her kids out of the house to get a break. They spent most of their summer between family and friends and going out of town with them. Ever since the new neighbors moved in everything had change for the worst. Kids were fighting more, and the disrespecting of adults and themselves grew unbearable. that's when Pam made a few phone calls and took her kids to spend their summer with different family members. Sliding off the bed like a lazy snake, Pam put her robe on, woke up the twins, and step by step made her way down the stairs. Pam and her kids gathered in the kitchen to eat breakfast. Still half awake, Pam lazily walked over to the kitchen and took out two ceramic bowls and a box of Captain Crunch cereal for her kid’s breakfast. She wondered what the weather was going to be like since the last three days had them cooped up in the house due to the ongoing heatwave. The tired mom of two sat down in her Lazy-boy recliner, took out her phone, and opened the ABC 8 news app. First, she checked the weather and was relieved it was going to be ten degrees cooler than it was the day before then she went to the local news section of the app. “Oh my damn!” Pam exclaimed her hand over her mouth, her eyes wide like porcelain plates. She jerked up from her recliner, enlarged the story that was on her phone, and proceeded to read the jarring news about her next-door neighbor. The article read:

A Henrico County mother has been arrested and charged with assault and battery, assault with a deadly weapon, 3rd degree child endangerment, theft, and wire fraud. 39-year-old Sandra Allen was arrested at her Henrico County home after neighbors reported hearing children screaming continuously and reports of child possible abuse. One neighbor reported to the agency that a group of children ages 9 through 17 were involved in ongoing physical altercations causing one child under 12 to have a broken arm and a deep laceration to her face. The other child had multiple bruises on her face causing severe swelling in her left eye period. It is unclear if the minor would need corrective eye surgery at this time. Pam shook her head with disbelief. How could something like this happen right under her nose. She sat back in her recliner and proceeded to finish reading the rest of the news article. Apparently, Miss Allen orchestrated some sort of Fight Club and was taking bets from other teens and unfortunately some other adults as well. We do know that one child was dragged onto the cement and sustained multiple blows to her head and was rushed to the hospital. So far, it's Miss Allen, along with her boyfriend, that had been arrested in connection with the crimes. Pam's eyes were so glued to what she was reading on her phone, that she did not notice her children asking her if she was OK because they heard her exclamations of disbelief.

Further along in the article Pam scrolled through the comment section; it was filled with a few unpleasant stories about Miss Allen and some of them were hard to believe but given the light of the situation it couldn't be too far from the truth. Some of the comments included one stating that the kids would also meet up behind Hidden Creek Park or Jefferson Park to have these frequent fight nights. One community member who wished to remain anonymous also stated that, "There have been incidents when she would come home from working her second shift, the kids would be out there unsupervised; absolutely no one there to monitor the kids! It would be about 5 to 6 of them just running around cussing and fighting." She also claimed that “you would hardly see the police presence around that and to hear that a Fight Club kind of thing was going on right across the street from me is very sickening! What if one of the kids had died or gotten seriously injured,” the anonymous community member asked. “Like come on parents be aware of where children are always!” the young neighbor said tearfully.

The article went on to say that multiple neighbors have witnessed the mother driving around the Glenwood Farms apartment complex with her children on the hood of her car—as if they were in a music video. Some have even stated that the kids look unclean, unkept, and plain dirty. Our other sources have confirmed that the police have had to patrol the once quiet Central Garden area frequently because of all the extra activities going on. Pam looked over at her twin 7th graders and couldn’t fathom NOT giving a damn about them. How can parents treat their kids like rotten tomatoes? Pam asked herself. DJ and KC had already eaten their breakfast and were on their way to the bus stop when their mom stopped them.

“My sweet babies, I love you so much. Please be careful when you leave here and have a great day at school,” Pam said hugging her kids tightly. Pam watched her kids leave for the day. Ping! An alert came through to Pam’s phone with the notification that read: 13-year-old girl died from massive head injury.

"Oh my gosh! No!" Pam shouted clutching her knees. She got on the phone and called her sister and tell her what happened, but she didn't pick up, so she texted her instead. Sitting in a state of shock Pam couldn't help but to feel sorry for all the misguided children involved in that mess. She thought about how thankful she was that her babies weren't out there hurting themselves or others. The only thing Pam could do was fall to her knees and pray for the family of the deceased and the other victims as well.

Tramaine:

Your story is very imaginative and an interesting look at a day in Pam's life.

As you get more skilled at writing, I cannot wait to see what else you might create.
