*WARNING!* This short story contains depictions of violence, s#xual abuse, gore, and physical and mental abuse. This goes into more detail about Eagle's Barn, featured in my story Moon's Rose, which has not yet come out. If you wish to read/listen to it, it will be on YouTube(eventually) under the channel KarmaDraws. I have the same profile pic on there as I do here :)
You have been warned!
"I'm so sorry." The words of Guppy's mother echoed in her head. She had been gone for a while now, Guppy didn't know where she was. She stood up, walked around in a circle, and lay back down again. She could hear every intake of her breath, every shift of her tiny kit muscles, every pleading wail from the other cats here. Being blind did have some advantages, better hearing was one of them. She heard the small cat door leading into her room get pushed open, and a cat got shoved roughly through and onto the floor. They let out a whimper, and Guppy heard them shuffling across the damp ground. A moment later, two other cats came through the door, and her senses were flooded with the scent of her father and one of his she-cats. He had a few, but every once in a while, one would go missing and he would start bringing in a new one. This one was one of the oldest, a seemingly patchy old she-cat named Belladonna. Her father said that Belladonna was a dark red tabby, although Guppy had no clue what any of that meant. She turned her attention back to her father. He was a large cat, with many muscles and many followers. He had a large scar on his shoulder, from a badger, he had told her. She didn't know what a badger was.
"P-please, please sir! I don't know where I am, where are my kits? Where am I? What's going on?" The poor new cat was cowering against the wall, Guppy guessed, as many of the new ones did. The ones that didn't got hurt by her father's followers, and became his special she-cats. She heard her father walking across the room towards the new cat, and Belladonna following. She suddenly had the prickling feeling of eyes focused on her, and a moment later her father spoke.
"Belladonna. Bring my useless wench of a daughter over here."
"Yes, sir." Guppy heard Belladonna walking over to her chair, and felt the cushion dip when she landed beside her. "Come on, kit." Belladonna picked her up by the scruff, and carried her back over to her father. She sat her down, and Guppy felt her dad's hot breath on her face.
"I've got something for you." He growled, shoving her towards the cowering cat. "This is Violet. She'll be your..." He seemed to be thinking for the right words. "Temporary mom. Koi has become a liability, and she will no longer be coming back." Koi was Guppy's mom.
"What's a liability?" Guppy didn't bother to look at her father when asking the question, he always said that her eyes creeped him out.
"It's something that wastes more that it's worth. Your pathetic excuse of a mother only gave bad kits. Like you. You're blind, useless. Others were blind, deaf, born dead..."
"What's dead?" Guppy asked.
Her father scoffed. "You'll probably find out soon enough. Now I'm leaving, have fun with Violet." He stalked towards the door. "You know what to do if she tries any funny business, right?"
"Yes father." Guppy padded closer to this new cat as her father left. "You're Violet? Where did you come from? What color is your pelt?" She didn't know what any of the colors looked like, but she always asked anyways.
"I... don't know where I'm from. I forgot." She heard the cat wiping their face with their paws. "I'm black and white. My name was Socks, but that scarred cat decided that I needed a more... girly name." They sniffled. "I don't want to be a girl though. I don't feel like one, even though that's what people say I am. It's not fair."
Guppy tried her best to console Violet, whose crying had now turned into heavy breathing and gasping. "What do you want me to call you then?" She asked.
"Well... Violet is ok, I don't mind that. You'd better call me that so your father doesn't get mad. But please don't call me a she-cat. I'd feel better as a..." Violet struggled for the right words. "I don't know. But if you could call me they instead of she, I'd appreciate that."
"Ok." Guppy cuddled up to them, delighted to have another cat to be with. "You can call me she. And my name is Guppy."
"Very nice to meet you, Guppy."
~A while later~
"Child! Where has she gone?!" Guppy reeled as her father hit her across the face, almost unsheathing his claws. She shook as for the first time in a while, she was the one pressed against the wall.
"I don't know!" She wailed. "I was asleep!"
"Liar!" Once again, her father hit her, this time hard enough to make her ears ring. "You know what happens to cats that don't follow my orders! WHERE IS SHE?!"
"Stop! Please!" Violet sprinted through the small cat door. "Please leave her alone! I just needed to go to the bathroom!"
This time, when Guppy's father struck, he hit Violet, and they fell to the floor, trembling. "You have a litterbox you foolish wench! Is that not good enough for you?!"
"I didn't know! It's too dark in here to see anything!" Violet winced as Guppy's father made to hit them again. Guppy felt a twinge of guilt. She didn't need the light, being blind. She had forgotten that other cats needed light.
"F-father? I'm sorry, I didn't warn Violet that there was a litterbox. I forgot that they needed light."
Her father roared in anger, and both Violet and Guppy shrank back. "Remember yesterday when you asked me what dead meant? Well, it means this-!" Guppy flinched, but he didn't hit her. Instead, Violet started making a strange gurgling noise. Guppy felt them slump to the floor, and she rushed over to see what was wrong. She stepped in something.
"I'll leave you with that." Her father sneered, and left.
"Violet? Violet, are you ok?" Guppy tried to ignore whatever she had stepped in, and bent down to Violet's nose.
"Guppy..." Violet let out a cough, splattering more of the stuff on the floor. "Guppy, you need to get out of here. Please. Otherwise, your father will make his followers make you have kits until you give out, and then you'll end up like this..." They trailed off.
"What? What do you mean?" Guppy tried to shake Violet awake, but her paw slipped down to their neck, and where there should've been soft fur, there was slick skin and loads of the stuff she had stepped in. The thick coppery scent was flooding her senses. "Violet..."
"Please..." Violet whispered, their voice barely audible. "You're the best kit I've known, please don't let yourself end up like me..." They went limp, and Guppy felt a single breath on her paws, then...
Nothing.
