Of all things that I thought I would be doing on a Saturday afternoon, tailing my best friend’s husband was not one of them. When Sheila, my best friend picked me up from my apartment, I thought we were just going out for lunch.

Boy was I wrong!

Sheila told me that she found incriminating text messages on her husband’s phone and that he’s meeting a woman at a restaurant for lunch.

I rolled my eyes. I love her with all my heart, but she’s too suspicious sometimes. She thinks that Henry, her husband, has a wandering eye. He’s really a sweetheart.

I told her so. “Henry won’t cheat on you, sweetie. It’s all on your head. And what were you doing looking through his messages? Don’t you trust him?”

“Of course, I do. It’s those women I don’t trust. Henry is too sweet to realize that women are seducing him. You know what I mean.”

“Precisely, he’s too oblivious. He does not look at other women that way, he only sees you. So please, can we just go have lunch because I am hungry.” I whined.

We sat in her car. I could see Henry inside the restaurant, waiting for his mystery “date”.

“No, we are staying here. I want to see who this ‘Cam’ is. What if she’s prettier than me, Rainey? What if she ensnares my husband in her web of lies and lust…” she trailed off.

“For all we know, ‘Cam’ is a man, not a woman.” I pointed out. I could see Sheila is considering this.

After a beat, she shook her head. “I don’t care. Besides, when I asked Henry, he told me that he was playing basketball with his friends. He looks as fresh as a newborn baby!”

I shook my head. Looks like I would be hungry for a while longer. I wish that ‘Cam’ would show up already so Sheila can see she’s wrong.

A few minutes later, we saw a beautiful, petite woman walking towards Henry. He stood up and kissed her cheek. I cannot believe it! I turned to Sheila. She was shocked and shaking.

“See! Look at that jezebel kissing my husband! Come on, Rainey! Let’s show that homewrecker who she’s dealing with!” Sheila shrieked. I have never seen Sheila mad before.

I tried calming her down. “Sweetie, let’s not make a scene, okay. Calm down, okay? For all we know they are talking about business or something innocent. Breathe in, breathe out. Come on.”

“I will kill her, disembowel her, and feed her to the dogs! That little bi..”

“Hey, you are not feeding her to anyone, okay? You are not supposed to be stressed out.”

Sheila was six months pregnant.

This seemed to snap her out of her murderous rage.

She sighed. “Okay. I will try to calm down. If I promise not to kill her, can we go inside to eat?”

I nodded my head. “Crisis averted.” Henry is going to owe so much for this.

We got out of the car and walked towards the restaurant. We took extra care not to be seen by Henry or ‘Cam’.

We sat down a few tables away from them. I could see that Sheila was still affected by the sight of her husband eating with another woman.

“Sheila, you promised not to kill her. Let’s order, okay.” I signaled the waiter. He took our orders and we waited.

It was a packed restaurant. So many witnesses if Sheila tries to do anything.

I then noticed two men sitting to our left. One was a brunette and the other was a blonde. They were whispering to each other, with the blonde guy looking homicidal.

“I wonder who he wants to kill,” I asked myself. I shrugged my shoulders. I looked at Sheila again.

She was still looking at Henry’s table. Henry and ‘Cam’ are now laughing at each other. Maybe having lunch here is not the best idea. Sheila might actually murder that woman.

I heard a growl from the table to my left. The brunette looks like he is stopping the other guy from leaving the table. Blond guy was glaring at someone. I followed his gaze and gasped.

He was glaring at Henry and his ‘date’.

I don’t know what to do. On one hand, I want to know what’s going on. On the other, I don’t want this guy to fuel Sheila’s rage.

I don’t know how long I was staring at the two men until Sheila asked, “Are you okay, Rain? Why are you staring at those two guys? One of them your type?” I cringed. She said it loud enough for the two men in question to turn in our direction.

They looked at me expectantly. I smiled sheepishly. “Nope. But I think one of them wants to kill Henry right now.” I said, pointing at Henry’s table.

“You know that bastard?” The blonde guy asked me.

“Hey! My Henry is not a bastard. If anything that woman is a harlot. Isn’t it obvious he is married? He’s even wearing his wedding ring!” Sheila hissed.

“Well, my fiancée is wearing a big engagement ring, don’t tell me he didn’t see that?!!”

I decided to say something before my best friend can say anymore. “Hi. My name is Rainey. This is Sheila, the bastard’s wife.”

There was a twinkle in Brunette Guy’s eye he extended his hand and said, “Hello. Name’s Evan. This is my brother, Jay, the harlot’s fiancé.” I shook his hand and smiled. I like his sense of humor.

“How did you know they were going to be here?” I asked Evan, “Jay went through Cam’s messages. He read that she is meeting a man here. She told him that he is going to the salon. I tried to calm him down. But he insisted on going here.”

“Look at them, laughing and touching each other! What the hell is going on here?” Jay said loudly.

“If he wants to see his child born, he better let go of her hand.” Sheila hissed.

“You’re pregnant? That jerk! What kind of a man would that to his pregnant wife?” Jay said, looking at Sheila’s round belly.

Before I knew it, Sheila just started bawling. “Sweetie, don’t cry. Maybe we should go already. Let’s have our food to go, okay?”

Sheila just started crying harder. Jay stood up and gave her a pat on the back. Evan stood up as well. “I’m so sorry. I tried telling Jay that Cam wouldn’t cheat on him. But he was so sure. But looking at them…” he trailed off.

“I know me too. I never thought he would do this to his pregnant wife.” I shook my head. Jay was whispering words of comfort to Sheila, who is still crying.

“Sheila! What are you doing here? Are you okay?” I turned around to see Henry and Cam looking at the scene before them.

Before I knew it, Jay threw a punch. I ducked out of the way.

Henry, went down on the floor but stood up and punched Jay as well. Cam tried to Henry off of Jay, but Sheila pulled on Cam’s hair and everything went to hell.

The restaurant staff and the other patrons are trying to separate them but to no avail. I managed to pull Sheila away and said, “Let’s go home. Pack your things and stay with me for a few days, okay?”

“Jay, let’s go, okay? You’re better off. Stay with me for as long as you want, okay?” I heard Evan say. I smiled at him and he gave me a smile back.

“Hey, if you want to talk, this is my number.” He handed me his card. I smiled and gave him my own.

I tugged on Sheila’s arm, pulling her away from her cheating husband. I could hear Henry telling Sheila to stop, but we kept on walking.

We got to her car and as I was turning on the engine I heard my phone go off.

“That was the craziest thing I’ve ever seen. Want to have dinner sometime? – Evan”

I smiled before replying, “Hell, yes!”

I pulled out the parking lot with my crying best friend beside me.

This is one crazy Saturday afternoon.

This was a great story of a heated and realistic social drama. It steers with a good surprise tangent the way only the weirdest circumstances of real life can sometimes. Palpable worries and fears within the dialogue. The flowing anger stirs inside the reader well and pulls them into tension. It's a good "diamond in the rough" style of twist.
