Enjoying the Snow

I love watching the snow fall from my bedroom window. Living here in Alabama, we rarely get snow in the winter time. This year we got up to eight inches of snow. I was so excited to here that school was being cancel for this whole week. My mom is a teacher at my elementary school and she was out of school with us. My brother Ryan and I sat down to breakfast, watching the man on the news talk about all the school closings. I couldn't wait to go outside and play in the snow.

“Can we go outside?” I asked.

“After you eat breakfast,” said Mommy.

“Yea!” squealed Ryan.

“It's cold,” says Mommy. “You'll have to bundle up first.”

“Okay!” I said.

I finished eating my breakfast and put the dishes in the sink. Ryan followed close behind me doing the same. We ran into our bedroom to get ready to go outside and play in the snow. I had never made a snowman before. I hoped it would last longer than a day after I made it. I grabbed my coat, gloves scarf and my galoshes from my closet. My brother beat me getting dressed and was out the door in a flash. Ryan fell to the ground and began wave his hands from side to side in the snow. When he got up it looked just like an angel with wings.

“I made a snow Angel Tommy,” said Ryan.

“It looks nice,” I said

I flopped down in the snow to start making my snow man. I gathered up some snow from the ground to make the bottom part of the snowman. Then the another ball for the middle and a smaller ball for the head. I was going to take off my scarf to put it around the snow man until I saw my mommy shaking her head looking out of the window. I just gave her a wave back and a smile. On the porch there was a hat and some old gloves. I saw two tree limbs that had fallen off the old oak tree in our yard. I wen to pick the limbs up off the ground.

“This will be the hands for my snowman,” I said.

I took the two limbs and stuck them on both sides of the snowman. I ran onto the porch and grabbed the top hat and the gloves. I placed the hat on the top of the snowman's head and the gloves on the limbs. I looked around and saw a few black pebbles on the side walk. I took the pebbles and made eyes and made a mouth for my snow man. Something was missing when I looked at him.

“Oh, I forgot his nose!” I exclaimed.

I ran past Ryan standing with his mouth open eating snowflakes. My mommy was standing in the doorway.

“I need a carrot Mommy!” I screamed.

“Let me get it,” said Mommy. “I don't want you tracking snow in the house.”

Mom went over the refrigerator and got a carrot from the vegetable drawer.

“Here you go,” said Mommy.

“Thank you,” I said.

I grabbed the carrot and ran back to my snowman. I took the carrot and stuck it in the center of the snow man making his nose. I took a step back to look at my snow man. He looked perfect to me. The neighbors dog Buster came into our yard playing in the snow. Mr. Waters soon followed his dog to make sure he didn't get lost.

“Hi, boys,” said Mr. Waters. “Are you enjoying the snow?”

“Yes, sir” I said.

Ryan was making snowballs throwing them into the oak tree. Mr. Waters put a leash around Buster neck and they both walked back to their house. It began to snow even harder. The snow began to cover the lens of my glasses. I took them off and wiped off the snow with my scarf.

“Boys!” screamed Mommy. “Come inside the house now!”

My cheeks felt ice cold and my nose had started to run a little. Ryan ran and tripped in the snow.

“Are you okay?” asked Mommy.

“I'm okay,” said Ryan.

“Take of your galoshes before you go inside the house,” said Mommy.

We both kicked off our boots and headed inside. The house smell delicious of fresh chicken noodle soup that mommy had made. She had sat two bowls on the table for me and Ryan. We took off our coats, scarfs and gloves and sat at the kitchen table. There was steam coming from the soup bowls. Mommy had made some hot chocolate with marshmallows in our Santa cups. I picked up my cup and blew inside to cool off my hot chocolate before taking a sip. Ryan had already started on his bowl of chicken noodle soup. My cheeks began to feel warmer and my hands still tingled a little from being outside in the snow. I finished eating my soup and drinking my hot chocolate. I went into the living room and looked outside the window. The snow covered the ground like a thick, fluffy white blanket. It was nigh time. The street lights had come on in our neighborhood. My mommy car was covered with snow from top to bottom. Ryan had fallen asleep on the couch. Mommy kissed him on his forehead and told him to go to bed. I wanted to stay up and wait for my daddy, but my eye lids started to get heavy. I began to yawn and mom looked at me.

“Got to bed Tommy,” said Mommy.

“Okay,” I said.

I went into my room and put on my pajamas. Mom turned down my covers for me like she did every night. I got into bed and she kissed me on my forehead.

“Goodnight sleepy head,” said Mommy.

“Goodnight,” I said.

“I love you,” said Mommy.

“I love you more,” I said.

I watched my mommy as she turned off my lights and walked out of my room. I couldn't wait until tomorrow to get back outside and play in the snow all over again.
