I had a friend named Cindy. We grew up together in a small town in UK. As we graduated from our high schools, we split paths and went our separate ways, she went to London to study, I went to Bermingham for work. We still tried to keep in touch.
1987. June 13th
Hi John
I just arrived at my new place. I took a short walk around and I really like it here. People are so nice and friendly. My flat is quite small, but it is enough for me, you know I am a minimalist.
I met my new neighbour Anna, she seems very nice she said she will show me around later, if I want to. My Campus tour is in beginning of August, I will come visit you when it’s done.

Every time I saw her letter, it filled me with joy. She was my best friend, tbh she was my only friend.
1987. June 21st.
Hey Cindy.
I’m so glad you like your place there. I got to my place too, as I promised, I found a place where I could also have you over. My place is bigger, since unlike some people, I work for it 😉.
I start my work in a week, still going through some last-minute training, but I already like few people from my training group. Anna seems very nice, I hope she takes you under her wing, someone has to drag the introvert in you out :P.

1987. July 15th
Hey John.
What was that dig about me not working huh :X. I’ll have you know, I am working in a cafe near my house as a waitress. I will be self-sufficient. I will be coming to Burmingham on 10th of August, please wait for me. Sorry it took me so long, been busy with settling in and starting work. How is the workplace? Your training should’ve ended by now.

1987. July 24th
Hi Cindy.
I’ll wait for you in the train stop at 9am, as per travel data. I already prepped you a place to stay, and a few horror movie marathons for us to engage. Hope you won’t get scared :P. Job is great, I am currently just an office worker, getting files to do and told how to do them, but I enjoy the peace of monotony. I also made friends with my seat neighbour Dave, he’s a cool dude, he said he’ll introduce me to his group of friends. Did Anna end up showing you around the city?

Hey John.
I had a blast with you this month, I missed you so much. You were right, Dave is cool, so are his friends. By the way 😉 I saw how Janice was looking at you, I think she likes you, you should ask her out. Anna is showing me around the town today together with her friends, I hope they are as great as your group. School starts in 2 days I can hardly wait.

1987. October 1st.
Hi Cindy.
A whole month passed by without me noticing, I am so sorry. I did ask out Janice, we had a great time, and I think I have my first girlfriend now. We are spending quite a lot of time together. The Dave’s group also seems to like me, so we hang out together all the time, so I guess I am now just part of the group. I let the time pass me by because I have been flooded with work, I am so sorry. Your first month has passed, how has it been? How was Anna showing you around?

Hey John.
It’s nice to hear you and Janice are doing great. It’ s okay I understand, I had been swamped with studies, work and Anna dragging me out all the time. I had not even noticed the time that passed by. By the way, I am looking for a bigger place, maybe you and Janice could come visit when I find the place? Maybe over Christmas, since I will have my break then. Tell Janice and the gang hi from me. Hi Cindy
We would love to join you for Christmas. Janice was a bit afraid you didn’t like her, something about jealousy or something. I kept telling her there is nothing like that between us. The guys all miss you, they liked you, as I knew they would, everyone always likes you, even if you are introverted 😊. It is nice that Anna and uni is keeping you busy, but don’t burn yourself out. Take a breather, catch up with studies and ask Anna to give you a week or something :D or else I come over to talk. But seriously, take care of yourself. Work is slowing down, so I will be able to reach out easier. I hear Kids banging at the door asking for candies.

Hi John
I just finished most of my class tests, I was allowed to skip the final exams. I moved further from Uni, but the apartment is bigger and cheaper. Being away from Anna has given me a bit of breathing room :D. I think Steve from the group likes me. He is cute, so maybe I’ll like him too 😊. I’m stunned she thought I wouldn’t like her. I understand the jealousy part, but I’ll share you with her, for now >:). Your rooms for visit will be done soon, can’t wait to introduce you to Anna. I need to finish my studies for last few tests. And save some of that Candy for me.

1988 January 31st.
Hi Cindy
It was really fun. Janice and I were just going through the pictures and thinking about it. Too bad Anna didn’t come by that often, maybe she just didn’t like us. Steve did come by quite often, are you two getting serious😉? Going back to work after all of it was really tough :D, but I somehow managed. Dave was a bit sad I didn’t spend Christmas with him and his friend, but I said next year you come and celebrate with us. I hope Anna comes back around, she seems like a nice girl, maybe a bit too drinky, but it is nice sometimes to have people like that.

Oh, the new semester is a killer. So much work, so much to study. Anna also started coming by more often with Steve. They have been over almost every other day. I keep telling them I can’t, but they don’t listen. I am still managing, but it is taking all I have to not fall behind in class. Steve has been more forward with his intentions too. I do like him, and we have been dating for a bit now… What about you and Janice, how you two doing after all this time?

Oh, we are doing great, in every department, if you catch my drift. It was hard to get in grove, seeing how she was my first girlfriend, but she understood. I mean, if you really like this guy, go for it, but be careful, some men can be a bit different after having sex. I wish you all the best. I am about to get promoted to a sub manager for my team, Dave already made some jests about working under me, but I think it will be fine.

Hey John.
I got serious with Steve, we even moved in together. Anna has made me into quite a popular girl, next time we meet, you might not even recognize me. First year of Uni is about to end and I am doing great, acing classes, even with Anna dragging me out all the time. I wish we can meet up again in summer.

I am happy for you and Steve. Janice left me last month, it was mutual, we are still friends, just realised, the spark was gone. I think it was because of me working too much each day. I am truly happy for you though. I always knew you would make it big out there. You are the rising star. I would be happy to house you and Steve any time this summer, just tell me upfront so I can have my days off.

I have not been honest and was ashamed to tell you. I failed University. Apparently, Anna hung out with me because I was ‘pure’ and Steve made a bet, he could get me. After we did the deed, they all left me. I spiralled down and could not get back up. I ended up missing classes and failing University. I am sorry for not telling you sooner. Thank you…

Reading this, my heart sank. I dropped all that was happening, job meetings and recalls. I took first train and went all the way to London. I took a cab to get to her place, I didn’t even knock, I just broke down the door in desperation. She was sitting by the kitchen table, pills on the table. I heard her say. “You came.” She tried to smile.
