Jamie looked up at Ryan who was standing only a few inches away from her face. Her hands balled into fists, her eyes shooting daggers at him and his little group of friends.

“Oh look the dwarf is getting feisty.” Ryan said teasingly “Oh My God I’m so scared maybe she’ll cook me into one of her little British crumpets.”

Jamie pulled back her leg and kicked him hard on his shin. He had been bullying her about her height and accent ever since she moved here in fifth grade and she was just about sick of it. Ryan groaned spitting out profanities as he clutched his leg in pain.

“That’s it you little sh** you’re dead,” Ryan said grabbing her by the collar of her shirt. Before his palm could connect with her face, she clawed him on the cheek causing him to drop her on the floor immediately. Jamie kicked his feet off the ground and his body collided with the floor.

Everyone in the cafeteria was stunned to silence as she sped off the school grounds without so much as a scratch on her. Ryan was at least 6’4 and Jamie was barely 5’ tall yet she managed to escape the beating of her life without even getting hit once.

Jamie sat down on her bed contemplating what she was going to do the next day when Ryan was inevitably going to attack her. Suddenly her best friend Devin slipped into the room through the door almost giving her a heart attack.

“Devin you scared me”

“Sorry. I came as soon as school ended. I wanted to leave, but Mrs. Gregory wouldn’t let anybody step out of the cafeteria until she knew exactly what happened”. Devin said settling beside her on her bed

“No problem Dee. I’m just wondering what I’m going to do tomorrow.”

“You could always tell your mom,” Devin said hopefully.

“No way I am not getting shipped back to England.”

“But what if you switched schools. I hear East is accepting transfer students.”

“Dee that’s going to take at least a week to set up”

“Then you are doomed, Jay. Don’t worry, I’ll make sure that, that your tombstone says something like ‘Here lies the body of Devin’s not so awesome best-friend’” He said waving his hand for extra effect.

“Shut up you idiot,” Jamie said as she pushed him off the bed “But seriously we need to come up with a plan to save my butt”. And they spent the rest of their day doing just that.

Jamie woke up a little late according to plan and to be honest she didn’t mind the few extra minutes of sleep she managed to get. She performed her morning routine taking as long as possible and began the slowest walk of her life to the bus stop. She missed the bus as expected and ran all the way home.

She spent about ten minutes convincing her mom to get off her bed and drive her to school. She arrived at school around the middle of the first period. She took a deep breath before walking into the school building. She strolled into the school office where Miss. Janice scolded her for arriving late and handed her a tardy slip.

Immediately the slip was handed to her she took off running to class. She stepped into class cutting off the teacher mid-sentence. Everyone looked up from whatever they were doing to her petite frame. The teacher sent her a glare before he spoke to her.

“Why are you late Miss Jackson?” He asked, an angry edge to his voice

“I … um I slept in” She stuttered weakly

“Make sure this doesn’t happen again” He stated.

“Sure thing Mr. Harper” with that she scrambled to her seat beside some blue-haired girl who pointedly glared at her. She brought out her notebook but she was too distracted by her thoughts to listen to the teacher.

All of a sudden, the bell rang and the students rushed to leave the class. Jamie was halfway through the door when She caught a glimpse of Ryan and a few of his friends waiting outside the classroom. She groaned and turned around walking back to her seat.

Mr. Harper raised his eyebrow giving her a confused look. Jamie suddenly had an idea she walked up to the teacher, an innocent look on her face.

“Can I help you, Miss Jackson?” He said looking confused.

“Yes sir, I just wanted to apologize for coming late to class and I was wondering if I could retake the test we wrote last Friday? And if you don’t mind, could you please answer my question on the way to my next class?” She took a deep breath after the rush of words that came out of her mouth.

“Of-course Miss Jackson,” he said gesturing for her to lead the way.

Ryan’s eyebrows perked up at the sight of Jamie before his face paled when he sighted Mr. Harper. He sent Jamie a quick glare before him and his friends stormed off.

Mr. Harper escorted her to her next class where Devin was waiting for her with a free seat beside him.

“Hey Jay, how’s the plan going?” He whispered into her ear

“Pretty bumpy but at least I’m not dead right?” She whispered back

“I guess so,” He said ending their conversation

They stayed silent for the rest of the period apart from the occasional whisper and giggle from Jamie. Luckily for Jamie, the teacher let them off five minutes early due to some ‘business’ she had with the principal.

The next class they had was the gym when their plan would finally ensue. Jamie rushed to the girl’s locker room to find Samantha, Ryan’s girlfriend. She was a nice girl, just not the brightest bulb in the room. Since she left class a little early she had to wait a while for Samantha to arrive with a few of her friends.

She stopped leaning on the wall and approached her.

“Um, Samantha can I talk to you? In private” She said meekly

“Sure,” she said walking away from her acquaintances “So what did you want to tell me” She stated once they were a safe distance from them

“Well… Um, I don’t want to sound rude and I am not a relationship breaker but I saw this picture and I just wanted you to see”

Jamie brought her phone out of her pocket and showed the unsuspecting girl the picture Devin had sent to her which held the faces of Ryan and some girl she had never seen before.

Samantha gasped covering her mouth with her hands as tears brimmed in her eyes. Jamie felt terrible for breaking the poor girl’s heart but it had to be done eventually.

“I’m sorry about Ryan, I just wanted to let you know.”

“Thank you for telling me.” She choked out through tears.

“No problem,” Jamie said walking off to class.

She chose this period because after five minutes of class the teacher always left to attend to ‘a few problems’ and didn’t come back until fifteen minutes of class were left. And both Ryan and Samantha were in the class with her so they were both likely to clash before he could attack her.

The plan started normally enough with Coach Jerry making them do the regular stretches before walking off after giving his regular excuse. Ryan smirked as he walked up to Jamie, a slight smirk on his face. Just as he was about to reach her Samantha yanked him by the collar. He turned around about to protest but she gave him a loud slap on the cheek before he could get a word out, she yelled loud enough for the whole gym to hear

“We’re over” Then she stormed off. Jamie couldn’t help but burst out laughing at the look on Ryan’s face. He walked up to her, a scowl on his face just as his hand was about to connect with her face the principal’s voice stopped him.

“What do you think you’re doing young man?” she said, her sharp voice ringing through the gymnasium

“Nothing Ma’am,” Ryan said cringing

“Follow me to my office now!” she all but yelled

Ryan ended up getting a month’s suspension and getting cut off the sports team. He and Jamie are still not on good terms but at least she doesn’t have to suffer any beat downs.

You open with a compelling situation: Ryan taunting Jamie. And then Jamie gets the better of him! ... but she knows it won't last. I love the camaraderie between Devin and Jamie, which you show through some lovely humor. The two friends come up with a plan to save Jamie from further attack. I like how you used lots of dialog to tell the story. Thanks for a good read! I hope you'll keep writing every week.

Opeyemi - Your title was awesome. I laughed the moment I saw it, and I had to read your story. It worked too because the kids were in high school. I liked the character of Jamie, and I had a clear sense of who she was on the outside. I would have loved to know more of her inner world. For example, why doesn't she want to go back to England? The best bit was the opening scene. Thank you for sharing your story.

Thanks for your feedback it was highly appreciated. I couldn't expand on the story really well due to the fact that I was working with a deadline and I get distracted pretty easily. I actually had a whole storyline on why she couldn't go back to England I just didn't have the time or patience to delve into that aspect.
