“Good morning Mr Parnell” Alaina said, she was grinning ear to ear. It was early in the morning and Alaina was ever so happy. The ships bells banged in the distance as a new vessel had arrived into town. “Well good morning there Alaina. How do you do?”

“Why i’m spectacular! Here, I would like to send this to New York please!” Alaina said with delight. This had been her dream for so long and it had finally came true! For her (almost) entire life Alaina had spent her time in the most horrendous and awful orphanage. Full of sorrow and shame, she had grown up and just barely managed to push through each day with one motivation, one day she would get out of there and start a new, better life and hopefully would help other kids to grow up in a better place filled with nicer people.

Mr Parnell stamped the letter and carelessly tossed it into the bin with all the other letters. They talked about the weather and how eachother had been since there was no one else waiting in line. After getting all caught up, Alaina said her goodbyes and walked out the door. She had just made the biggest and upmost important decision of her life.

A couple months ago Alaina had been contacted that her mother was alive. Living in an orphanage all her life made her worrisome that things could’ve gotten mixed up and possibly her mother was not alive after all. Alaina was also upset, why didn’t her mother come forward and tell her that she was alive and well, why didn’t she come get her from that terrible place, and most importantly, why did the orphanage lie to her all these years and tell her that her mother was dead? But all worries aside Alaina was set to find out for herself. She had written a letter to her mother. And all she wanted was an answer to one question, did her mother truly love her? And she had sent it. Now all she could do was wait.

In the weeks leading up to the arrival of the letter, Alaina was very anxious. She paved around the floor and peaked out one of the windows for what seemed like every hour.

A week passed, the day was old, mother nature’s tears piled in heaps a-crossed the grass. As she poured steaming tea into a delicate porcelain cup, Alaina shivered. She had stayed up nearly half the night waiting. Waiting for something that could be a new beginning for everything. Waiting for the letter from her mother. Her eyes started getting heavier and heavier. Soon she fell asleep. The next morning she woke up at the crack of dawn to the sun shining brightly on her face. The sounds of birds chirping, fish splashing, and cows mooing filled the air as she began to wake more up. She groggily stood up from the chair and looked out the window. Her face lit up as the sound of horses galloping towards her house became loud. She brushed off her dress and ran acrossed the wood polished floor boards to the front door. She ran by the old swing and the clothes line that barely could hold any clothes, and just as she got to the gate the mam carrying the mail jumped off his horse. He handed a letter to Alaina that was much rather ordinary, to most people this would’ve just be another letter but to her it was much more. She thanked the man and walked back inside. She set a pot on the stove and filled it with water, but she couldn’t handle it, the excitement coursing through her caused her to open it then and there without even sitting down. She opened the letter ever so carefully. But once Alaina saw the writing on the inside she forced herself to sit down. The letter read:

Dearest Alaina,

I’m so glad you found me,I’ve been waiting for you to come of age so you could understand my situation. You probably are mad at me for not taking you out of that horrible place and it’s ok, it was a terrible decision and i should’ve prevented it somehow, but the truth is, I couldn’t, I had you when I was only just 18. My mother had me put you up for adoption against my will. Although I have come of age where I can take you back, I was fearful that you wouldn’t forgive me and think that I was a terrible person. But that is not a fact, the fact is that I love you!I love you more than anything in the world and I would absolutely be blessed if we could get to know eachother more! Please come visit? I would love that more than anything. And remember, I love you always.

Much Love,

Your mother, Marrila

Alaina couldn’t believe it! Her heart was pounding, she couldn’t even hear the rain pounding on the roof anymore. This was it, this meant that her mother was alive, and she had gotten her answer to her question, her mother did truly love her! She couldn’t bear it, she packed her things immediately and went to be, at first light she would ride to the train station and get on the first train to New York to see her mother.

Finally first light came, she went to the stables and fetched her best horse and saddle. She hooked the saddle onto the horse and jumped on it. She rode out into the early morning as everyone was beginning to wake up. She raced through the town and eventually made it to the train station. She found the closest train and bought a ticket. She got on the train and didn’t turn back. Maybe this was the beginning of a completely new life, a better one? A worst one? I guess the only way to figure that out was to go to her mothers and find out herself.

I liked how it ended with the sentence "I guess the only way to figure that out was to go to her mothers and find out herself." It feels like the author actually knows Alaina and is asking the reader. It also leaves room to imagine her new life and (maybe) write a follow up story... I also liked the title, it isn't too revealing because the reader doesn't know if the letter will change every thing for better or worse...
