I had a dream

By Slavica V. Joković

I once had a strange dream that I could not interpret.

It was two centuries ago, in the early 19th century. I was walking with a man and two little girls, our daughters. We were dressed elegantly, in a fashion that reflected the era and high social status.

On that winter day, he was holding the hand of one girl, and I was holding the other, so that they were happily walking between us. The man was tall, with black hair, slender with broad shoulders, and had regular, sharp features. He wore a frock coat, that is, a long, fitted coat, with a high collar. His well-tailored trousers, made of wool, were tucked into tall boots. In addition, this man, who belonged to a higher social class, wore a tall, rigid cylinder hat that was made of felt.

I wore a long dress, made of wool, which covered my feet. Over the dress, I wore a long woolen coat with a warm shawl draped over my shoulders. Also, I wore a fashionable cap that framed my face and was tied under my chin. Additionally, I wore ankle boots made of leather with a lace-up front. Moreover, I wore leather gloves like this man.

Little girls had long, wavy, dark brown hair. They wore woolen coats, double-breasted, that reached below the knees, and caps made of wool, tied under the chin. That was typical at the time for their age in winter. Judging by the clothes we wore, the family belonged to a wealthy upper social class. The little girls happily enjoyed the walk. We stopped during the walk to buy them candy.

In the next dream sequence, again, that same man was next to me. We were sitting in the house at a spacious table made of solid wood, with wide legs. We both sat quietly, side by side, in silence, on that beautiful sunny day. Our faces were turned towards the windows of the room, which were wide open, so that airy, clean air, which smelled like a freshly cut lawn, reached us. We were looking out of the window. at the vast, endless wheat fields. The ears of wheat slowly swayed in the gentle breeze, which completed the idyllic picture.

The man had a serious, stern, but calm expression on his face, which was tempered with an occasional soft smile. He was wearing a white shirt and brown trousers made of fine material. I sat next to him quite calmly, with my arms crossed on my knees. My clothes were casual but elegant. I was wearing a long, dull-colored dress, which was waisted with rich folds that fell to the ground. That man was a big landowner with spacious property.

What that dream was telling me, I couldn't interpret. From time to time, I thought about that dream, but I could never figure it out.

It was one winter day when the weather was pleasant and clear. The whole day I was thinking about whether I should go to that, for me completely unimportant, event to which I was invited. Since the weather was nice, I decided, although reluctantly, to go. I accepted it, somewhat sullenly, as an obligation to perform, in addition to my daily duties.

At that time, I had my hairdresser, so I asked her to do my hair so that I would have thick, big curls. My hairstyle with big curls framing my face reminded me of some eras from the past. I dressed rather informally. Furthermore, I wore brown, old, suede boots because they were very comfortable, and that was the most important thing for me on a rather busy day. I thought just to attend the opening of that event and stay for a while, and to return home as soon as possible.

I didn't find that anything could particularly interest me, and that's why I didn't pay attention to the present group of people who were there. Shortly after I arrived at the event, in the crowd of people, a tall, thin man stood in front of me. Probably, we wouldn't even have noticed each other if he hadn't suddenly turned towards me when he heard my voice, while I was talking to an acquaintance in a language he didn't know. His searching glance rested, surprised, on my face for a moment. It seemed that we knew each other from before, although we had never met.

The man was wearing a brown suit and new brown leather shoes. He had some gray in his black hair, and he wasn't so young anymore. It was him, the man from my dream. Our paths crossed again in an instant, by chance. How am I so convinced of that? Well, that's what my intuition told me.

But now we are just strangers. And everything passed like an instant, like a brief flash of light. Although it happened only for a moment, it meant a significant change in my life.

There are understandings according to which everything is predestined and that we cannot change our destiny. Perhaps it is easier for a person to think that events happen outside of our will, accepting that understanding as a straw of salvation, by which he removes responsibility for his actions and thus justifies his behavior. In this way, the fear of change, of defeat, and of the unknown is shown.

Dreams can serve us as a tool for retrospection and introspection. With the help of dreams, we can try to better understand others and ourselves, our desires, efforts, and goals in life. The useful side of dreams is that they help us analyze events and draw lessons for the future.

Maybe the way to interpret dream messages and their symbolism could be by using intuition. From time to time, I think about the mentioned dream that I had a long time ago, but I have not forgotten it. When I think about that dream, I still can't explain it. I read some authors try to explain it in this way: when we dream, we go to the recent or distant past, and return to a life we once lived. No one knows why this happens.
