On Christmas day, in the year 1999, everyone celebrated Christmas time. The family gathered together for dinner and had a good moment. But Thomas, the leading programmer of XYZ company had a project to prepare for Y2K to come next year so he was stressed about what he had planned for a long time. However, he would not like this to make his wife and kids unhappy. He created a party exchanged gifts among children and shared food and drinks with the family. He prayed that he would prepare well for Y2K and hoped the world would not plunge into chaos and that life would go on as usual.
.
He took time with his wife and children so they went to watch the tree lighting in the town. They played games and watched Christmas movies together. They made chocolate together and ate it deliciously. They have a great dinner, sing the Christmas Carols and other karaoke together, and take a holiday photo together. His children gave him a card that they did it themselves for him. It is a picture of a snowman with a smile. They said that they knew that the dad was tired but kept fighting and they would be his willpower. He had a good time, hugging his wife and children, and went to the bedroom, still worrying about the Y2K project at his office.
.
He can’t sleep so he listed the items he must do in preparing for Y2K as the following.
It involved several important steps to ensure that computer systems and software could handle the transition to the year 2000 without issues. Organizations must first identify which systems and applications were at risk of failing due to the Y2K bug. This included everything from mainframe computers to embedded systems in various devices. A detailed inventory of all hardware and software was created, noting which systems used date-sensitive code. Systems were prioritized based on their importance to operations. Critical systems (like banking, utilities, and healthcare) received immediate attention. The actual process of fixing the date-related issues in software code and hardware. This involved updating or replacing older systems, and modifying software to correctly handle four-digit years. Extensive testing was conducted to ensure that the changes made would work correctly. This included not only testing the individual systems but also their interactions with other systems. Organizations must develop contingency plans to deal with potential failures. This involved preparing manual processes to replace automated ones temporarily if needed. The fixed and tested systems were deployed. This often included rolling out updates and patches across the organization's IT infrastructure. We must keep stakeholders informed throughout the process was crucial. This included employees, customers, partners, and regulatory bodies. As the year 2000 approached, systems were closely monitored to catch and address any issues that arose.
.
He slept on the computer desk and dreamed about the chaos that would occur in the banking and stock market if we didn’t prepare for Y2K. There were miscalculations of stock prices as computer systems might misinterpret the year 2000 as 1900, causing errors in date calculations. This could have led to failures in financial systems, trading platforms, and other critical infrastructure.
.
These failures could have resulted in a loss of investor confidence, market crashes, and severe economic consequences. The uncertainty and potential chaos might have triggered a recession or even a depression, affecting millions of people's financial lives. Many investors would be angrily queuing to blame for the miscalculations.
.
As well as the information of deposits and loans in the bank, it would be miscalculated, some people would be poorer or richer without expectation. But it’s not the truth so the bank must solve the problem after that.
.
Utilities like electricity, water, and gas fail, causing widespread outages. The system for servicing utilities would not be working so people are disturbed with problems like no electricity and water to use. They had to live in the dark and had a smelly body. There would be people stocking canned food for living during the Y2K problem as they can’t cook and the shops can’t open. Healthcare systems struggling to access patient records and manage treatments. The medical records of patients are confused and the doctor can’t trace the history of the patient’s symptoms. Transportation systems experiencing failures in scheduling and navigation systems. The flight's airplane had some mistake in displaying at the airport, the passengers couldn’t go to their destination as planned.
.
When he woke up in the morning, he thanked God for inspiration for the dream that exemplify the damages of Y2K that can happen during that period. He planned to debug the system and coordinate with people in the organization, customers, and stakeholders involved to know about the Y2K effects. So he can control the system to have no mistakes and he tests the system as the pilot study whether the debug that he did possibly solve the Y2K problem or not.
.
On January 1, 2000, there was no Y2K problem as he dreamed and everyone worried about it as he planned and protected all the points concerning the problems. Thank God for the dream that made the Year 2000 would not be like his dream. It is only a dream, not the real problem at all. So everybody can have their lives as usual. Everything goes smoothly, not having to have a smelly body from no water to taking a shower, or miscalculation in the stock market to be turmoil.
.
This teaches us that planning is important and that sometimes inspiration from dreams might help us solve the problem in reality. Don’t underestimate the tiny things in life that we have each day. It might be the hero in encountering the disaster. After planning, we should execute according to the plans and check which plan has been done and what should be corrected and improved. And we should prioritize family and spend time with them at most, make them happy as much as possible. Even though we have work to do, but with family, we have the willpower to do the task and solve the problems better. Hope everyone is happy and may you have a good time and be wealthy and healthy.
