Clarissa woke up sweating and out of breath. She hadn't thought about her past in years. She's 36 now.. why was she getting memories from high school. She's always been a liar, she knew her lies would catch up to her. Her parents always told her she was a sociopath. Whatever that meant. Her brother was always the normal one. How could anyone be normal in this society?
The night before April 1st, Clarissa set 12 alarms. She wanted to wake up before her brother. Clarissa who was 5 foot 2, with black curly hair down her back. Her brother Camden who was 5 foot 8 looked very similar to his sister, only he had his short curly hair dyed purple. Their friendship with each other was stronger than any siblings could say about each other.
Clarissa looked at her calendar on Wednesday, April 1st, 2005. She rushed downstairs to put her first prank on her brother; only to walk into one herself. "Haha, you should have seen you're face you loser!" Yelled her brother Camden. Camden was only 2 days younger than her. Clarissa and Camden have always been known by their family members as the twins. Clarissa took the tape off of her face and pulled the pieces out of her hair. "That's unfair, how did you get up before me?" Clarissa pushed her brother's head playfully almost knocking him over. After breakfast, they got ready and went to school. Upon arrival, the school was buzzing with excitement. It was April Fools. Aka... Senior Prank Day. The entire senior body, including Clarissa and Camden, were buzzing about the prank.
The day went on as normal until 6th block. Half of the seniors were in the principal's office and the other half were in the lobby. They were covering EVERYTHING in sticky notes. The time goes by as usual and so when the principal arrives at his office he is in for quite a shock.
I'm still trying to figure out how he was the normal one. He's the one who came up with the whole "sticky note" idea for the entire senior class. How was he the better twin..?
By the time the students make it back to class the word is out. Everyone is talking about the prank, even the teachers. No one but the seniors know exactly what was done, everyone just knows that the prank has happened.
It was just a small little prank.. how did it come to this. Clarissa looked around her small enclosed room thinking back to the day once again. She closed her eyes biting the inside of her cheek.
When the principal arrived at the school, the seniors weren't quite finished so Clarissa ran down the steps and out the front door to stall the principal. "Mr. Harvey," she yelled as he closed his car door, "hi, sorry, I just need to talk to you." She was running through excuses in her head until she got to one. "Since I am the head of the student council, what can I do for dance ideas?" Mr. Harvey's face lit up. "I was waiting for this question," he beamed. The entire student body knew their principal was gay and they all went to him for advice. "What if we did a Valentine mixed with a prom theme? And what if we did it as a whole school-type thing, not just for the juniors and seniors?" Clarissa smiled, she really did enjoy her conversations with Mr H. She looked up at the window and saw her brother sticking a thumbs up at her. "Okay, thank you so much, Mr. H, I have to get to class." She turned and ran towards the door.
Sometimes I regret just leaving him right there. It was an open area, with not many closings, just a big parking lot.
When Clarissa made it to her class her brother gave her a high five. "Perfect timing," he said as the bell rang. About 15 minutes later the loudspeaker came on and Mr. Harvey's voice said aloud, "Good Afternoon Whithervill High, it has come to my attention that the seniors think they are funny," they heard Mr. Harvey laugh gently and noticed he clearly wasn't angry, "congratulations on this year's prank, I can't wait to see what the new seniors have planned for me next year., but really you guys could have done better than sticky notes... Harvey Out" The class laughed. When the bell finally rang the class hurried out. Clarissa walked toward the office so she could talk to Mr. Harvey, but when she walked in his office said closed and she saw him leaving out the back. She ran down the stairs and busted out the door hoping to catch him, but failed.
I should have caught up with him that day.
She met up with her brother and they went home. The next day everyone got a call that the school was closed. Early that morning their principal was beaten and strangled in the school parking lot. The police would be working hard on the case. It was in the middle of the story when they turned on the news. "29-year-old Steward Harvey was beaten with what police are saying a wrench that was found in the proximity, but autopsies are showing that there was a struggle and his cause of death was lack of oxygen." Clarissa muted the television when grainy police images were displayed.
The police never caught the person who did it.. did they?
Months passed, students and teachers were questioned, yet no one was ever put away. The memorial for Mr. Harvey was held. No one could be trusted. Anyone here could have done it. So why did the police give up on the investigation?
Sometimes, sociopaths can look like you or me.
Clarissa tried to scratch her cheek. She looked around her small enclosed room once again and laughed. She laughed and laughed looking at her foam walls and her tied straightjacket.
I told you... liar. You could believe anything you read and wouldn't know you were being fooled til the last second.-
