Fiction Drama Romance

It was a rainy friday night, so rainy that if one were currently outdoors, they would probably have to shout in order for their voice to even be audible over the loud rain.

Addison sat on the couch in her living room, her attention completely on her phone screen as the sounds of the raindrops hitting her window filled her ears.

She stared at her list of contacts on her smartphone as she fiddled with the pull strings on her pink hoodie, pondering over which one of her crushes she should text.

Yes, crushes. Plural.

Addison had developed an intense crush on both of her two guy friends, Ryan and Kai. She hadn't meant to fall for both of them, but, being a seventeen year old girl and all, having feelings for two different guys at the same time was practically bound to happen eventually. And lucky, or not so lucky, for her, they both liked her back. This had quickly become a problem for Addison, since her crushes on both Ryan and Kai only grew even more the more she was around them, and now, she was stuck in a love triangle that she saw no easy way of escaping.

Just then, there was a knock at Addison's front door, making her jump slightly as she snapped out of her thoughts.

"Coming!" Addison shouted to whoever was at the door before springing off of the couch to go let them in.

"Who's there?" Addison called once she was standing in front of the door, pressing her ear up against it in order to hear their reply over the chaotic sounds of the rain.

"It's Kai!" said the person at the door, Addison's heart rate instantly speeding up as she recognized her crush's deep, attractive voice.

She opened the door so fast that she nearly yanked it off of it's hinges.

"Hi." Kai greeted with a half smile, as he stood in the doorway, dressed in a heavy, waterproof, hooded jacket and rain boots.

"Hey...." Addison reacted, unintentionally staring at him dreamily.

"Um, could I....?" Kai hesitantly spoke, indicating that he wanted to come inside.

"Oh right! Gosh, I'm so sorry! Come on in." Addison reacted, blushing in embarrassment as she ushered him inside, closing the door behind him.

Kai then removed his soaked jacket, revealing his white hoodie, as he placed his jacket on the nearby coatrack on the wall.

"Did you walk all the way over here?" Addison questioned.

"Yeah." Kai simply replied, looking over at her with his dreamy blue-ish green eyes.

"B-but it's raining so hard outside. Why didn't you drive?" Addison couldn't help but ask.

"My older sister's borrowing my car to go see her friends or something like that." Kai reacted nonchalantly as he went to go sit on Addison's couch as if he lived in the place.

Addison's heart fluttered as she realized that he trudged all the way over here through the heavy rain just to see her.

"What are you doing here?" she questioned, just to be sure.

"You don't like rainstorms, so I came over to keep you company until it's over." Kai explained to her with the most angelic smile ever seen

''Omg! he remembered that I don't like rainstorms! That's so thoughtful and sweet!' Addison thought.

"Kai, that's- that's so thoughtful. Thank you." Addison said, sitting down on the couch a few inches away from him, only to have him put his arm around her waist and gently pull her closer to him, causing her to blush.

"No problem, Addy." Kai replied sweetly.

Addison smiled, but she couldn't help but let her mind wander to her other crush, Ryan. Where was he? What was he doing? Was he thinking of her? Or did he get tired of waiting for her to make up her mind and was cuddling with another girl???? She hated the thought of Ryan not being interested in her anymore. Ryan was Addison's more sort of nerdy best friend, and she was crushing on him so so hard.

As all of these thoughts were flooding Addison's brain, a 'ding' noise from her phone was heard, letting her know that she just received a text, her picking it up instantly since she sort of hoped it was Ryan.

To her relief, it was.

'I'm two minutes away from your house right now :)'

Addison's eyes widened as she read the text, internally freaking out.

"Who's that?" Kai asked curiously.

"Uh…." before she could reply, another text came through.

'I know u hate rainstorms so I'm coming over so we can cuddle ;)'

This specific text made Addison feel butterflies in her stomach, partly because that was so sweet of Ryan, but partly from nerves because this was definitely about to be trouble.

"Who's that texting you, Addy?" Kai asked again, Addison's mind already getting to work on coming up with a good lie.

"Um, just my um friend." Addison stammered out, but her lies were rendered useless when there was a knock on the door.

"Oh gosh-" she muttered, knowing that it was Ryan.

"I'll get it." Kai offered, standing up to get the door.

"No!" Addison called, bolting after him.

Normally, this wouldn't have been a problem, Addison, Ryan and Kai all in the same room. In fact, Ryan and Kai were pretty cool with each other, but with them both crushing on her, Addison was slowly but surely, unintentionally destroying their friendship the longer she waited to choose. So Ryan coming over to literally cuddle with Addison, while Kai was already doing just that, probably wouldn't make for a very good combination.

Kai ended up reaching the door first, much to Addison's dismay.

"Ryan? Hey, dude. What are you doing here?" Kai greeted Ryan once the door was opened.

"Oh, um I actually came to see Addy." Ryan awkwardly explained.

"Um hi, Ryan." Addison awkwardly greeted her crush, trying her best not to focus on how good looking he was. She gestured for him to come in, since it was still raining pretty hard outside.

"What's that?" Addison asked, noticing that Ryan was holding what seemed like a dvd in his hands.

"It's your favorite movie. I bought it so we could watch it together." Ryan explained, quickly glancing over at Kai with a somewhat jealous look…. ok, so it was a really jealous look.

"What's he doing here?" Ryan quietly asked Addison, nodding over to Kai.

"Um well, h-he kinda came over for the same reason you did." Addison honestly told him, figuring that lying would be useless now, the atmosphere growing agonizingly awkward.

"To cuddle with you?" Ryan asked in shock.

"Wait, wait. Ryan was coming over to do what?!" Kai questioned, effortlessly inserting himself into the conversation.

"Look, guys. Don't act surprised, ok? You already know that I have a crush on both of you two!" Addison couldn't help but yell, hating how it seemed like her whole world was currently crashing down around her.

Ryan sighed "Addy, this has been going on for like, what? Almost a year now? I don't like the thought of you in another guy's arms. When are you gonna choose one of us?" he asked in exasperation.

Yes, it had been going on for almost a year. But how was she supposed to freaking choose?!

Addison was pretty much speechless. She was really crushing hard on Ryan, but just as hard on Kai.

"He's right, Addy." Kai chimed in, frustration evident in his voice. "I think it's time you choose one of us. You can't date both of-"

"I know!" Addison interrupted. "B-but I- I can't choose between you guys! I don't know who to pick!" she was nearly crying by now.

"Addison, I think it's for the best that I leave." Kai stated.

"No! I love you!" Addison reacted desperately.

"Addy, I love you too, but you're also in love with Ryan." Kai countered, almost in tears himself from all of the emotions building up. "I just need some space, ok? Bye, Addison." Kai told her, and with that, he left her house.

"Addison, maybe you need to find someone else. Other than both of us." Ryan reluctantly said.

Addison shook her head rapidly. "No I can't lose you either, Ryan, I love you too!"

"Addy, I love you too. But this whole love triangle is destroying all of us inside. I think for your sake, I should give you some space." Ryan said, placing his hand gently on Addison's shoulder as she looked down at the floor, knowing that he was speaking truth.

"Bye, Addy." Ryan spoke before leaving the house, Addison softly crying as soon as the door closed.

She had been so worried about ruining her friendship with them by choosing between them, that she ruined her friendship with them anyway.

Two months later....

Addison walked into her favorite cafe to get a snack after a long day. It was a sunny day out, not a cloud in the sky.

She sat at a table, glancing absentmindedly over the menu in her hands.

Just then,, someone walked up to her.

"Hi, is this seat taken?" the guy asked her.

Addison looked up at him and nearly froze.

"Ryan?"

"Addy?"

"I'm so sorry about-"

"It's ok. I forgive you." Ryan interrupted her, smiling nicely, completely surprising her with his words.

'Ding' came a noise from Addison's phone

Kai: 'Hey. Can we talk.'

The end.

Sweet little teen story, with an amusing ending full of possibilities... I got asked to look at it for Critique Circle, and I'm glad to have read it - I enjoyed it even though it's a long time since I was a teen, but I think my 13 yr old niece would probably enjoy it. I think you developed the story well with a natural flow, and got Addison's character across nicely, and the two lads just enough to show the relationships between them all and how that influenced the story. I can't think of anything you could have improved for a teen ...
