"She's hot, but she's got a dark side," the red-headed stranger whispers to me.
The ambient chatter of the room seems to fade into the background, replaced by the hushed murmurs of intrigue. The room itself is a picture of refined elegance, with walls adorned in rich burgundy wallpaper that casts a warm, inviting glow under the soft ambient lighting. Ornate chandeliers hang from the ceiling, their crystal prisms refracting light in dazzling patterns across the space. Plush velvet curtains frame tall windows, offering glimpses of the city skyline aglow with twinkling lights.
But amidst this lavish backdrop, my attention is drawn to the captivating woman across the room. With her dark brown hair expertly gathered in an effortless bun and her legs crossed elegantly in crisp white linen trousers, she exudes an aura of refinement, sitting so poised that it's almost unsettling. I could describe her in many ways, but "evil" isn't the first word that springs to mind.
I meet the stranger's eyes, a mixture of fleeting displeasure and growing curiosity filling me. "How do you figure?" I ask, genuinely intrigued.
"Well, she certainly has a mesmerizing gaze," he begins, his voice low and conspiratorial. "But observe how she sips her coffee, with a hint of disdain in the curl of her lip. Notice those pauses, those moments of distant contemplation? It's not mere reflection; it's calculation. There's a flicker of cruelty in her expression when she thinks no one's watching. Yet, despite these subtle signs, there's an undeniable allure about her that draws people in. But mark my words, there's darkness lurking beneath that elegant facade."
"But how do you-" I start, only to be interrupted.
"And besides," he interjects with a smirk, raising an eyebrow, "I happen to know her personally."
"That was quite the performance," I acknowledge with a wry smile. "How is it that I still find you likable despite being a total jerk?"
"It's all part of my charm," he quips, waving off my comment. With that, he takes my arm and leads me over to her table.
"Hey there, Glowbug," he greets the potentially malevolent beauty.
"You're late, Blaizley," she responds without looking up from her phone.
"Aw, you know I hate it when you call me by my full name," he retorts with a hint of sarcasm.
"Just as you know to call me Lumina. Not Gl-glowbug," she counters, her disgust evident.
"Whatever, Glowbug just sticks better. Anyway, this is..." he begins, pointing at me, then hesitates, realizing he doesn't know my name.
This piques Lumina's interest, prompting her to look up. She chuckles softly. "You don't know his name, do you?"
"We'll find out eventually," he says defensively, turning to me. "So, you're...?"
"Name's Kairo."
"Not much of a talker, are you, Kairo?" he remarks as he finally decides to sit down, and I follow suit. "Well, I'm Blaizley Beaumont III, but most people call me Blaze."
"Most people except your family and me," Lumina adds.
"But Arie calls me Blaze, and she's practically family," Blaze retorts.
"Arie would call you 'Your Honorable Mighty and Highty Blaze Most Handsome' if you asked her to," Lumina retorts.
"Hey, don't go hating on our Arie," Blaze defends. "Speaking of the devil."
In that moment, a girl approaches the table. Her long blonde hair cascades down her back in gentle waves, and her cheeks bear a sun-kissed glow. She stumbles over, a mix of speed walking and running. She pulls out a chair, breathless.
"Sorry I'm so late. The bus was delayed," she explains between gasps.
"I'm surprised, Aurora. I'd expect Blaze to be late, but you?" Lumina remarks, sounding concerned.
"I didn't want you to spend your gas on me," Aurora replies, cheeks flushing with embarrassment.
Lumina's gaze softens. "Honey, why didn't you say so? You texted me that you'd Uber."
"Because then you would've texted me so!" Aurora protests, her own frustration evident.
Lumina's expression softens further. "I understand. Let's talk later."
Blaze turns to me. "This is Kai."
Aurora glances at me, then back to Blaze, realizing there's a stranger at the table.
"Well, Kai, I'm about to tell you something mind-blowing. So..." Blaze begins, drawing out the suspense.
"Just get on with it, Blaze," Aurora interrupts.
"In exactly one minute, the world is going to turn back 15 years, and you won't remember this," Blaze reveals.
For a moment, I'm speechless. Then I start laughing. "Blaze, you almost had me there for a-"
Everything goes dark. As I blink, I find myself back in my college dorm room, confusion overwhelming me. How did I get here? It feels like a dream, but I know it isn't. Blaze's words echo in my mind, and I realize he was telling the truth.
As I stumble out of the building, memories of the encounter swirl in my mind. Determination takes root. I can't let this slip away, not this time.
Fumbling for my phone, I quickly jot down every detail I can remember. I have to preserve these memories, lest they fade like a dream upon waking.
But as I replay the events in my mind, I can't shake the feeling that there's more to Lumina, Blaze, and Aurora than meets the eye. And then there's Blaze's cryptic warning about the world turning back 15 years—a statement that seems absurd yet compelling.
With a sense of urgency, I resolve to delve deeper into this mystery. Perhaps there are clues hidden in the present that can shed light on the truth behind Blaze's words. As I navigate the familiar streets of my college town, I keep my senses sharp, attuned to any anomalies that might hint at the secret lurking beneath the surface.
But as I venture further down the rabbit hole, I realize that uncovering the truth will come at a cost. There are forces at play beyond my understanding, and delving too deeply carries its own set of dangers. Yet, the allure of solving the mystery proves irresistible.
And so, with determination in my heart and uncertainty clouding my mind, I embark on a journey into the unknown, guided by nothing but my instincts and the lingering echoes of a conversation that defied logic and reason. Little do I know that this journey will lead me to the very heart of darkness, where truth and illusion blur into one, and where the fate of not just my world, but countless others, hangs in the balance.
