Although there had not been light for years on end, I didn't allow that to affect the light in my heart and soul. One morning in 2455 12 years ago, we all woke up and I went to the kitchen for breakfast. I felt that we had something coming our way in the near future either days, months, or years. I felt this a lot, but I didn’t allow people to tell me that this darkness was permanent. As I walked outside to go to school I felt the cold, artificial air on my skin. It was dark as usual but I could still slightly see the electromagnetic field over the country. It was something to be kept secret because if you shared the fact that you could see it “they” would take you. My grandmother was killed by ”them”. The path that we walk on is lit with tiny lights implanted into the ground all along the trail.
As I approached the schoolyard it looked the same but different in an odd way. The playground was still there. The school house looked the same, however the color of the air was different and the feeling was different. Something felt off about today. The school curriculum always teaches us not to follow our gut feeling because it is just the spirits from below trying to trick us into something very bad. My mother and family don't agree with it but we are forced by the government to attend. The government was and had not been a topic of discussion for a remarkably long time. This is due to the fact that many of the government officials were the most important people in the world and “they” take people away that find out even the slightest detail of their master plan to take over peoples minds and bodies. This had a seemingly close resemblance to the past governments that tried as hard as they could to direct full control of the citizens and their minds. I arrived at my room and the number was six hundred sixty six. My heart stopped because as I was entering, a lockdown alarm went off and this only happened sometimes and had never happened to me. We rushed to the corner and hid as best as we could.
It turns out that the lockdown was for a small shop burning down across the street and they didn't know if it was an arsonist or not. The worst thing about our society is that there are only a few lights and they are white and artificial. There are old lights at almost every store but you can imagine what it looks like with it being dark outside and there being old ghastly lights all around. It’s horrible and the thing everyone wants most for our country is for there to be natural light again. Some people have tried to regain control over the country in a good way, however the current government has much more power than a few people. That was their problem, that they didn't have many people that teamed up to do it, but I bet if we all teamed up as a country then we could possibly win. Of course the school board does not agree with my position and will keep on not teaching certain things that are incredibly important for the students to grow up and have a successful life that can change the way we live forever.
It had been a few months, and during these few months there had been tension between the citizens and the government . I woke up to the dirty light from my lamp that was shining into my eyes. As I walked to school, it looked like the air was orange. My Class was incredibly quiet for the rest of the first and second period. After the second period, our class was pretty rowdy and made our teachers upset. In sixth period our principal came on the announcements and stated,” We are now on a lockdown due to conditions in the city and a mass shooting in the city hall.” We all had to squeeze behind the desk in the back of the class that was fairly large. I was not in the most comfortable position considering the fact that we stayed there for almost six hours. Most of our parents had come to pick us up by now and lots of the teachers were acting frantic and stressful. My mom came and picked me up and I was almost the first one to leave my class. When I got home the news was on and they showed a brief image of the riots that had been happening in the capital of the country. I started to think of the aftermath of all of these riots and none of the ideas I had were good ones. Eventually a man showed up on the news announcing a mandatory citywide lockdown due to the current situation. My brother got home right after and mother asked where he had been, to which he replied,” Oh um I was… I was at my friend's house, and his mom picked me up. She didn't believe him and wanted to call his mother but we soon came to a realization that the government cut off our phones and all electronics except for the news channels and radios. We decided we would go to bed for the night and see what happens tomorrow with the political drama. It took me about two hours to fall asleep which was probably by virtue of me getting up multiple times to “get water”. I really just turned on the television and watched it for a long time. I had a dream about all the light coming back and there being natural light from the sun and not just the dirty light from our electronic battery powered ones.
In the morning I got up and to my surprise all of my family was already up and seemed eager to hear what was on the news. I sat down and they announced that the citywide lockdown was over and that the light would finally be returning to our entire country and that it would be happening in almost five hours. We decided to get ready for the day. Later that day it was finally time and when it happened, it looked like the sky was peeling away like a sticker. The weirdest part was that the people were so not used to the natural light that lots of them passed out and for hours, there were people passed out on the ground.
Now that the government is much more stable and not as powerful as before, we are allowed to do many normal daily tasks such as shopping and art and so many things that were strictly prohibited before.
Life has never been better.
