The thief in the night

Written in response to: "Write a story where someone must make a split-second decision."

Christian

It was a crisp Monday morning in October. The sun was bright and shinning as Maria was preparing breakfast for her children. The world was in full swing as everyone hustle about trying to get to work, and go about their life, everything they have come to trust in was about to be shattered forever. That the life they once knew will be gone forever. Maria was a good mother who always woke early to make sure her children received a good meal before school. After losing her husband to cancer Maria almost gave up on life but she had her children to take care of. Her husband was a believer and he was the

one who took the children to Church so when he died they no longer went because Maria didn’t believe.

After fixing the children a big breakfast with bacon, eggs, pancakes and juice, she went and stood at the bus stop and waited for the bus. As the bus stopped the children hugged Maria and hurried onto the bus. As the bus drove away, Maria turned and began making her way back inside the house. Suddenly there was a loud noise and while she was speaking to her neighbor she disappeared. Maria began screaming and suddenly more and more screams began to break out as babies disappeared, fathers, mothers, cars crashing from drivers disappearing.

Mothers looking for their children, husband looking for their wives, friends looking for friends who just disappeared while walking.

Could it be someone shouted, Did Jesus just come like He said He would, did He come and still them away like a thief, when I wasn’t ready, when I wasn’t looking. Maria said, I didn’t think it was true that people could just disappear right in front of me while driving down the street, while flying a plane. I didn’t believe, I didn’t believe!!! Oh no what about my children, I have to go get my children. But as Maria made her way to the school she saw all the carnage along the way which made her heart drop as she saw cars in buildings, clothes without bodies. But once she arrived at the school Maria found that all the children had disappeared. Maria began to fall on her knees screaming out finding out her children were gone. Maria being consumed with so much grief passed out. When she woke up she was surrounded by people helping her. Maria jumped up and ran to the Church because she remembered when she was going to Church her Pastor had mentioned something about people disappearing when Jesus came back. Maria had stopped going to Church years ago because she said the people where to judgy and the Pastor asked for money all the time. Maria although she didn’t believe what the Pastor said was true, nor did she think it was possible she still had to go and see. When she arrived at the Church Maria searched but the Pastor too had disappeared, but Deacon Curtis was left behind. He was sitting in regret and sorrow crying I say I thought I had more time. I thought I could live my life the way I wanted and still have time to get my life together. I thought I could chase after the things of the world, make all the money I could; I would have shared it, but I never had enough. The things I thought was important, the things I treasured the theif wasn’t interested in. The only thing He wanted was those who were ready, who was watching for Him. I was too busy getting things instead of getting ready. This is how many will be when that day come so busy storing up riches instead of their hearts, saying I thought I had time. Some will be looking for those who have gone and yet to return. Many will blame it on aliens, some on terroist when the truth was the same Jesus who died on the cross and rose from the grave and when up in a cloud to heaven returned suddenly for those who were ready, who heard the silent trumpet sound, who saw, the breaking in the sky and went up to meet Him in the air. So the question remains: Will you be ready when Jesus Comes. Or will He catch you sleeping like a thief in the night. John 3:16 says “for God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believers in me shall not perish but they shall have everlasting life.” Only those who accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior will not get caught off guard , they will not be the ones left searching, seeking what will not be found. Only they will find joy because their sorrow will be over, their pain will be no more. Maria began to panic what will she do, how can she go on, how will she be able to live without her children? Her mind began to race, thoughts began to flood her mind; pretty soon hour turned into days, days into weeks. Soon Maria began to turn to God. She repented of her sins and accepted Jesus into her heart. Maria began to turn her pain into purpose as she shared her testimony with others. Maria began to tell others about what had happened and how they can find comfort and peace. As she spread the Word the Church began to grow, and while the world still searched for the loss still wondering what happened, Maria and others kept spreading the Word of truth, kept bringing to light the truth of what happened. Everyone wasn’t happy with their message and sought to silence all who dared to speak the name of Jesus. Some where even jailed, some beat. Families turned on family, caious became the norm as evil was on the rise. But Maria and those with her were determined to get the Word the truth out inspite of the cost, inspite of their own safety. Many gave their lives in the end.

There were a few areas that needed tightening, such as: "everyone hustle about trying to get to work," when her children were getting ready for school and "she went and stood at the bus stop," when it was the mom and her two children. I liked the repetition in this phrase: "Mothers looking for their children, husband looking for their wives, friends looking for friends ..." This is an interesting concept for a short story, though the misspellings and confusing turns in the plot detracted from the story.
