Neither the requester or recipient experience a manner filled moment. A foundational situation built on mutual respect for one another, an institution, a company, etcetera.

Why-Please.

There is some geographical thoughts relating to “Please.” In the Western world, use of the word is considered proper etiquette, and parents and authority figures often imprint upon children the importance of saying “please” when asking for something from an early age, leading to the description of the term as “the magic word”. But as many things can be, not really much is magic, magical or even explainable. But as we do, we will try. To explain. To learn.

J.L. Austin, a philosopher, introduced into linguistics-the scientific study of human language—in his investigation of the various aspects of speech acts. In his framework, locution is what was said and meant, and illocution is what was done, and perlocution is what happened as a result.

For example:

If a person asks, “Is there any salt?”, at the dinner table, the illocutionary act is a request: “please give me some salt” even though the locution are act (the literal sense) was to ask about the presence of salt. The perlocutionary act (the actual effect), might be to cause somebody to pass the salt. (wk)

David Holdcroft, a follower and speech act theorist of Austin, further studied the idea of IFID’s. Lest you run for the hills as if a bomb is ready to explode, you may not be far off in your personal interpretation of an IFID. Possible IFIDs in the English language include: word order, stress, intonation contour, punctuation, the mood of the verb, and performative verbs.

An utterance can be made with a certain Illocutionary force, or a contain a certain Illocutionary act.

For example: If you say “I promise”, it may be interpretation as a directive, an order, a request etc. That the utterance is intended as a promise.

There also exist Illocutionary negations. (negations never sounds like a good thing)

The difference between an “illocutionary negation” to a “propositional negation” can be explained by reference to the difference between “I do not promise to come” and “I promise not to come”. The first is an Illocutionary negation— the “not” negates the promise. The second is a proportional negation. According to Searle and Vanderveken, also theorists, Illocutionary negations change the type of Illocutionary act. (wk)

In 1902 a newspaper article suggested that the use of “please” in England was, at that time, limited to servants, and that children who used it would find that “it stamped them as under bred” leading to the conclusion that “please” would fall out of use elsewhere.
