Happy

Aloha! You got ice cream last night, right?

Yeah, I did. How did you know that?

I work at the ice cream shop. Butter pecan, right?

Right—

Well, what should we do today?

I dunno, what do you want to do?

I dunno.

What do you want to do?

I don’t know! I don't even know you two.

So?

You met me last night, remember! I’m Indy. This is my buddy, Finn.

Yeah yeah yeah, what should we do?

I just got here last night, and I have lots to do before school starts tomorrow. I think I’m just going to go home and unpack. Maybe we could hang out tomorrow?

Tomorrow? Nah, let’s just figure out what we should do

today.

Oh! There’s a cheesy campus event tonight, some sort of game show, I think.

Good idea! Let’s do that.

HELLO… HELLO… SUM–MER

HELLO… SUMMER… HELLO…

Oh good! You heard us, we didn’t know which house was yours.

So you were just going to roam around yelling my name until I

came outside?

Yup, and it worked!

You ready?

Ready for what?

We’re going to that campus thing, remember?

I’m unpacking.

Oh, well, can you take a break to come out and play?

Play?

It will be more fun than unpacking for sure!

I guess I can come.

Do you have a bike?

No, I just moved here.

I can give you a pump.

That doesn’t seem safe. You won’t be able to see if I’m sitting

on your handle bars, we’ll crash!

No, we won’t, just get on. It’ll be fine. I do this all the time.

I can walk.

No, it’ll take too long. Just get on.

Trust me, it’ll be fine!

You promise we won’t crash?

I promise.

Stop turning the handlebars, let me steer.

I’m not steering! I’m just holding on.

Relax, I got this.

Aloooooha! Welcome welcome welcome. We’ll laugh, we’ll cry, and some very lucky people will win some prizes. Let’s kick off the night with our first prize, a three gallon bucket of mint chocolate chip ice cream.

To win this prize, and I know you want it. You have to prove you can say hello in more languages than anyone else here.

By show of hand, how many of you know how to say hello in at least five languages?

Ten?... Twelve?... Fourteen?...Sixteen?

Come on up here! Prove it, and the ice cream is all yours.

Aloha, Talofa, Bula Vinaka, Malo e Lelei, La Ora na, Kia Ora …Mabuhay, Annyeonhaseyo, Konnichiwa, Ni hao.. Privet, Bonjour, Ciao, Hei, Hola…

That’s only fifteen.

Oh, Hello

We’ve got a winner folks, sixteen languages!

How do you know so many languages?

People fascinate me. I always ask them to teach me how to say, hello, in their native language. Hawaiian is my favorite. Aloha means hello, I love you, and goodbye.

What are you going to do with all that ice cream?

I’m going to eat it. This is breakfast, lunch, and dinner!

Hello–

Aloha. How are you?

Fine.

Just ask her.

Ask me what?

Is your poop green?

What? Why…

Just answer the question, is your poop green?

No.

Huh.

Okay, bye.

Are you, um, feeling better?

Yes, I am, thank you. Everything is ...ahem, back to normal.

And how’s Indy? Wait, where is Indy?

Well that’s kind of personal.

Right, you guys have very clear personal boundaries.

It’s hot today, let’s go get shave ice.

Where do we go to get shaved ice?

You mean shave ice.

That’s what I said.

No, you said shave-d ice. You gotta learn how they say it on da island.

The place is just up that road a little ways. We’ll have to take The Bus.

It will probably take as long to wait for The Bus as it would to walk there.

But The Bus is air conditioned.

I don’t know if I have time to take The Bus somewhere. I’m just on a study break, I have a test tomorrow.

You say that as if time isn’t just a made up construct and tomorrow really exists.

Dude, we’ve been through this. Time exists. And by the way we’re living in yesterday’s tomorrow.

Aha! You mean-- today.

Just because people move at a slower pace on this island, it doesn’t mean time stopped existing.

What exists is right now. Anything else is just theoretical. Doesn’t the tempo at which we choose to live our lives determine more than how many hours and

seconds exist in a day? What is the human obsession with how long it takes to

do something?

Is there really a bus? Or are you guys just messing with me?

Oh there’s a bus. It just comes whenever it wants to.

See there it is.

What flavor are you gonna get?

POG forever.

What’s POG?

P-O-G. Passionfruit, Orange, Guava. It’s a classic combo.

I’m thinking, Lychee and Coconut, with a scoop of ice cream of course.

Ice cream?

Yeah, they’ll put a scoop of ice cream in the bottom. It’s the best!

And azuki beans!

What kind of beans?

Azuki, they’re sweet red beans, very popular in Asia.

I think I’ll pass on the beans.

Really, mmm, they are quite tasty!

Was that the church bells?

Dude, is it really that late in the day?

I guess so, Man. Church bells can’t lie.

We gotta go. I have work tonight.

We just got our shave ice!

It’s cool, we can eat it while we wait for The Bus.

Aloha Summer!

My test will only take ten minutes

He’ll be gone for an hour at least.

I want to go home.

You need a pump?

Not home to my beach house, home to Arizona.

Nah, you’re just homesick. I’ve heard it happens to everybody.

You’ve heard it happens? You don’t get homesick?

Let's go get some ice cream.

No, I have to go to work. Maybe someone will actually drop in

to get tutored tonight and keep my mind off it for a few hours.

Yeah, maybe. What subjects do you tutor?

Mostly writing, occasionally math.

Hello? I need some help on a history paper.

Sure, let me get the tutor for you.

Aloha Summer. Here. Ice cream makes everything better.

Thanks. You don’t have to pretend to need a tutor though.

I know. You’ll be fine.

Yeah, I’ll be fine.

But if you wanna look over this history paper… ya know…. since I’m here.
