It was a priceless situation. Elly was valiantly struggling to fit her
entire range of supposedly necessary lifestyle choices for her fresh upcoming path in life into one brand new suitcase. Her birth father, Big Al, was slightly more than reluctant to engage in this feminine contest. Meanwhile, her stepmother, Cosmic Mystic Elke, occasionally interrupted her contemplation of her own second sight. Elke wandered into that mysterious environment of Elly's bedroom, her home away from home in Goodly Town by the seaside.
"Are you winning there?' Elly muttered, flushed, now at the stage of deciding if she really required all her fetching bikinis for her studies at Big Smoke University. She was used to living in two worlds already, having shared the past few years spending some months with Big Al and Elke, and some months each year with her own mother, Mahalia.
Now in what Big Al considered was way too young, Elly had been offered a fabulous pittance with a place in a PhD program, as a very advanced scholar. She was eager to strut her stuff, having completed a submission and applied successfully. She was fully dedicated to her unique concepts. Elke did suggest, "Maybe only take one swimsuit, and more sensible clothes. You can keep your beach stuff here, hope you do not forget us all here in the bay."
Elly replied, "Never, this is my home too, and always shall be."
Cosmic Mystic Elke hoped this could be could be a prediction, but was realistically aware of the lure of new friends, new experiences. Mahalia had been a bit cynical, suggesting that Elly use adequate contraception. Elly had scoffed, she had for years hidden her fearsome brains for developing Biomedical research underneath her bikini tops. Most of the lads in her peer group were more than slightly intimidated by her.
On the other hand, Cosmic Mystic Elke did advise her to take precautions for when some suitor for Elly's charms did wish to explore some amorous intentions. Big Al too was heard to mutter softly that he would take a rifle to any man who came near his one and only heir to his throne. Elke had softly told him to stop being antediluvian.
But there was nothing wrong with Elly's millenial brains or her sound Christian beliefs and upbringing in Goodly Town church community. Her family background had formed a very strong foundation. Elly realized she was now going to be her own gal boss, to think her own thoughts, and share her individual talents on a wider stage.
Elly finally sat on her suitcase, as this small blended family prepared to take her to Big Smoke. Once they arrived at her college, Big Al carted in Elly's minimal luggage and Elke added some posters and comforts to the teenager's small, but adequate room. Big Al was not too fussed that Elly was one of the few gals there, but they all said a fond farewell.
Really, Big Al had nothing to worry about on behalf of Elly. She quickly focused on this great opportunity to become part of the clever country Down Under. She was soon accepted as a junior star of the future. She sometimes joined some of her like-minded boffins for a coffee and a snack in their lounge cafe. Overcoming some hesitance, she discussed that she liked spending hours tinkering away, coding her own mini robot for an original invention. Elly hoped she could enhance the future of her human race.
One of the wiser, older and more jaundiced students told her to take a patent on her concept, warning her about the very real world of academic plagiarism by staff members. They had been known to swipe original student research and publish it as their own. Elly did as the student said, and applied for her patent.
Not long after Elly's prototype was completed, she was assigned to a field trip to the far northern hinterland. She was participating in her studies into the noxious effects of the manifold flies and mosquitoes which proliferated in the breeding grounds of a cattle station's water sources. Elly was allocated barely there accommodation in the farm hands' sheds. But she was quite philosophical, she was genuinely a gal with simple needs, just as well.
Even the searing hot weather and variety of other feral insects and danger of reptiles did not faze her. She did unleash her coded mini robotic device in front of those male intelligentsia, as well as the manager and owner.
Amazingly, being a proud Aussie scientist of the future, Elly had created an all terrain, multipurpose original robotic fly and mosquito larvae pooper scooper. As well as efficiently demolishing all such pesty and toxid insects from the environment, her concept for the future wellbeing of her world also turned the flies and larvae into water and oxygen.
Even under her baggy khaki shirts, there was nothing wrong or amiss with Elly's millenial brains. The men stood back in awe, they could not believe this astounding contribution to their Big Smoke University Department of Biomedicine.
Elly was rapidly on the Australian stage, and more than handsomely recompensed by all the state and federal governments in her land. Her patent for this robotic pooper scooper held good, as she was sent on a global lecture tour, and subjected to many media interviews and expansive coverage.
But that scene was so not Elly. Underneath her newly, richly endowed status for her design, she was still reticent, and creatively intellectual. She did yearn for Goodly Town, where she could have a simple Christian life with her friends and family. She could now well afford any comfort needs she might require.
So she left her PhD program, and returned to Goodly Town, to the sun, the surf, her beloved bikinis. Her values kept her strong. Elly did not really need the qualifications, or the blaze of the paparazzi, or the spotlight. She privately wondered if she would ever have the sort of love she could see cherished between Big Al and Cosmic Mystic Elke.
Elly went back home to Big Al's pad, then bought her own apartment, overlooking that cradle of creation, the ocean. Glorious sunrises filled her every morning, as she continued to tinker away at her next invention.
Surprisingly, she did receive an email one day from Howie, the older and wiser student with his sage advice about patents. He was now a recognisded academic. The two struck up a rapport, their blossoming attraction might lead to love.
Of course, Big Al checked Howie thoroughly, and gave this younger male more than a cave bear hand shake when Howie visited Elly in Goodly Town. Elke smiled mystically, their young love was so sweet as she welcomed Howie into their circle. Elly was known worldwide as totally beaut, no more flies, no more mosquitoes, plus added emissions of water and oxygen. One rather fetching Aussie gal with her own thoughts had changed the future.
