Mom insisted on taking me to school. I would normally be okay with that, but this is MIDDLE SCHOOL. Honestly.
Oh... have I mentioned today's "Sneak Some Zucchini into Your Neighbors Porch Day"? I call it Zucchini Day.
"Chelsea!" shouts Mom through a deep armful of laundry. "Have you packed your lunch yet? I'm so busy getting ready for your bi-i-ig day."
No, I'm thinking. No,no,no.
...
After lunch is packed, I call my bestie, Sara. She's going to Riley Remus Junior High, the fancy middle school. I'm... not.
A pang of jealousy rings through my veins.
"Did you plant the zucchini?" she asks through the phone.
"Yep." I can't help but snicker as I remember the woofs of joy from Little the chihuahua. And the squeals of annoyance from his owner.
"When does school start at Lewis Academy?" she inquires.
"Seven,"I mumble.
"Half an hour left. Good luck." she hangs up.
Great. My embarrassment clock is ticking.
...
Mom drives me to school, singing weird songs all the way. I shuffle awkwardly in my seat. Stop light, green light, stop light, green light.
After a series of off-tune songs, we arrive at the school. I gulp. Here. I. Go.
We walk through the open doors and see a cluster of students. No... a herd. All wearing lip gloss.
Then I notice a single girl off the sidelines. Her father grips her hand.
I saunter over to her.
"Robin." she says. "You new here too?"
"Yep." I nod. "You feeling mildly embarrassed?"
She laughs.
This is going to be a great year, I'm thinking. Zucchini and all.

Indeed, a *very* short story, but I like the voice :) Believably middle school. And for the short size, there's a lot happening here. The end is nice too, because it takes a mortifying situation and instead turns it into what could be a new friendship. This is important, because we learn the best friend is going to a different school. I think it's clear this is eating at the main character, and so a new friend is a welcome thing. So critique-wise, how could the story be expanded? A story probably shouldn't be made bigger or smaller just ...
