Fiction

This story contains themes or mentions of physical violence, gore, or abuse.

Adam was trying to find supplies among the nuclear ravaged city. He was trying to find ammunition, medicine, food, and water. They were running short on supplies and his sister needed it badly. He went to the old hospital which was firebombed months ago by the enemy. He hoped he could find supplies in the basement where he had already found hidden pockets of first aid kits and water. His sister, Abigail was already injured from a fall and needed antibiotics to fight off the infection that was already setting in. Just then he heard the creaking of a door. He thought, “Oh I’m done who’s gonna help my sister!”. But then, he heard a faint meow and saw an orange cat beside the door. The city was one of the hundreds of cities that were targeted by the bombs that decimated them and there was no sign of life inside. But, he knew there must’ve been survivors in the countryside. His own family had prepared for the war. They built a bunker and on a summer day they came, bringing destruction. Their terrifying shadows on the earth and they dropped their bombs. His father, a soldier, rushed out to defend their family and his mother threw him and his sister through the door and locked it. They stayed inside for a few weeks living on rations and when they came out it was a wasteland. Their parents were nowhere to be found and they were alone. It was a wasteland as they walked towards the center of the city they saw blackened and charred bodies, unrecognizable. From their parents they knew that most food and water would be contaminated and radioactive after such an attack. What used to be a bustling city a few weeks ago was now reduced to rubble and dead silent. As they walked away from the city they came across a woman with a deep cut and she kept saying, “Dave, where are you? Cathy?”. Then, the light left her eyes and she went limp falling to the ground. The war was a year ago. Adam had been able to safely get them to the countryside and they took shelter in an old farm in the secluded country. It turned out that the countryside was still being bombed by what remained of the military after a bomb flew too close for comfort. Most of the country was wiped out and they once again moved out into an old cabin in the mountains. Adam breathed a sigh of relief as he realized it was only a cat. He picked it up and decided to keep it as a pet. He packed up some bandages and some alcohol pads into his backpack and headed back. As soon as he got home his sister ran up to him and hugged him. He walked towards Abigail’s room and started replacing the bandage. As he worked he said, “Now Abigail this might sting a little, so be brave and stay still.” He applied the alcohol pads and disinfected the wound. After the nukes were dropped having a wound could have serious consequences if radioactive particles got in. It could cause severe radiation poisoning and getting infected with radiation was almost always fatal. Adam finished dressing her sister’s wound and showed her the kitty he found. “Hey Abigail you can name this kitty I found whatever you want, okay?”, Adam said. ”Ok, she is now Gabby the Cat.”

”Wow, nice name you got for her.” In the next few days, her wound got better and the infection stopped. Soon enough she was well enough to go outside and Adam took her on a few trips outside to get fresh air. One night as they were sleeping they heard two loud bangs and a high pitched scream from the direction of the city. Adam knew at once there were other people and they were armed. He quickly woke his sisters up and grabbed his hunting rifle along with all the food and supplies he could take. He rushed outside and heard a few people talking loudly, but couldn’t make out what they were saying. He quickly took his sisters and ran into the forest trying to stay hidden. They got away soon and tried to look for a shelter in the snow. Adam found some dead branches and pine needles and made a cushion and lean-to for them to stay the night. In the morning, Adam told his sisters and Gabby to stay at the lean-to and he went to his cabin to see what had happened. When he got close, it was a disaster, everything was burned down and nothing remained in the ashes. After taking in this sight, he rummaged around the wreckage trying to find anything worth keeping inside. Soon enough he just left as there was nothing but ashes there. He knew that these were dangerous people and still he couldn’t get over the fact that there were still people out there. He quickly ran back to his sisters fearing the people were still nearby and when he found them quickly took them away. They survived for a few days like that, moving at night and sleeping in the day. He hunted rabbits and squirrels, but didn’t use his gun fearing those people might find him. He cooked the meat at night when the men who they had heard would likely be sleeping. When it was morning, he came across a large hatch in the ground. He opened the hatch and inside he found supplies for months and most importantly a radio. He plugged in some batteries and to his surprise it worked. Static as he changed the channels until, “Hello to any survivors out there, this is the President. This will be our last broadcast. We are in Richmond, Virginia. If there are any survivors we are in Richmond, Virginia.” Static. Static. Adam knew this was his only chance to help his sister and give her a better life.
