The Perfect Proposal

By Chelsie Reid

Arabella was waiting in front of the tall building for her longtime boyfriend. She had been

planning this date for them for the longest. Arabella had come here early to make sure everything

was already set for when Lukis arrived. Since it was winter, she had decided to enter the

building. There was a row of chairs and in front was a desk with a security guard behind it. She

had already signed in so all she was waiting for was Lukis to arrive. Arabella did not need to

turn around to know that her boyfriend had entered the building. The automatic doors had

opened, and the cold winter air had caressed her skin. The smell from Lukis’s cologne had

flowed over to her. She turned around slowly allowing him to get a view of her red dress that fit

her like a glove from the top accentuating her curves. Then the dress slowly expanded at the

bottom like petals on a flower. Walking toward her Lukis smiled.

“Hey, you look amazing,” He said kissing her on the lips.

“Thank you,” She said holding him closely.

Then she let him go giving him a once over. He wore a dark blue casual suit, no tie, and his hair

was slicked back with gel.

“You like?” He asked.

“No, I love,” She said pressing the button for the elevator.

“So, what’s on the agenda?” He asked, grasping her hand.

“Well, it’s still a surprise so I need you to put this on.” She said pulling out a cerulean scarf.

She quickly tied it around his eyes. More than anything she needed to know if he trusted her.

“Do you trust me?” She asked out loud.

“With all of my heart.” He replied with no hesitation.

Arabella sighed in relief.

The elevator finally arrived and holding Lukis’s hand she entered the elevator. She made light

conversation with him telling him that he would love it. Before Arabella knew it, they were on

the 18 th floor. When they exited the elevator, the beautiful scent met them. The carpeted floor

was soft. The creamy color made the hall look inviting.

“So, you brought me to a restaurant?” Lukis tried to guess where he was.

“Hold on just one more minute,” She said when they reached the restaurant doors. She untied his

scarf, but not before kissing him on the corner of his lips.

“I could get used to this,” He said.

Arabella smiled. She knew he loved it when she showed him that she was more than his partner,

that she could also take the initiative and plan events. When the scarf was removed the first thing

that happened was that Lukis started to cry.

Usually men do not cry but, she could understand why he did. Lukis had told her that his

grandmother had taken ok him to this type of restaurant for his birthday every year.

“Really a revolving restaurant?” He picked her up and spun her around.

“I wanted to impress you,” She said smiling.

“Bella, being with you its all I ever needed,” He said.

Arabella hoped that was true because tonight she would put her heart on the line. They finally

entered the restaurant. The decor was so elegant. Each table had a little candle right in the

middle. All of the booths rotated, letting the occupants have a view of the stunning skyline. The

lady at the door asked the name for her reservation.

“Hi, Knightly is the name for our reservation.” She said.

They were immediately escorted to the booth. The booth they were sitting in, like everyone

else’s, had a candle. The only difference is that their candle holder had two candles. The two

candles signified the same number of years they were together.

“I really must say I’m impressed.” Lukis said.

Arabella smiled. She had so much more planned.

“I ordered for us. I hope you don’t mind.” She said.

“Are you kidding me?” He asked sounding like an excited kid.

“Nope,” She answered.

“You, Bella are not just the girl of my dreams; you are the girl who always manages to put a

smile on my face.” He said blowing her a kiss. This made her laugh.

“You’re a dork,” She said playfully.

“I’m your dork,” He responded like he always did.

“Do you remember the first time we met?” She asked.

“Everyday,”

It was a Monday morning and Bella was getting a coffee for her boss. She had run back to the

office and was on her way upstairs when she ran smack into Lukis who had been coming from

another appointment with a different department in the office. She had spilled the coffee all over

him. He had told her that perhaps this was their meet cute. And she had told him that he was a

dork.

“Good times,” She said. The food finally arrived- a plate full of rice, broccoli, and honey glazed

salmon. On the side was some garden salad. The waitress even gave them a bottle of red wine.

“Do you like it?” She asked after they had been eating for a little bit.

“Hmm,”

“What does that mean?” She said, worried.

“Well, I have a confession,” He said frowning.

“What?” She was eager to know.

“I like everything except for the broccoli,” He said.

“Really? That’s it?” She said smiling.

“Yeah, sorry,” He said.

“Don’t be. I hate it too.” Arabella said.

“Don’t scare me like that.” She chastised him.

“It was just that day we were in the mall and we had Chinese food.” He said.

“You wanted to impress me?” She poked fun at him.

“Yeah, I guess so the truth is that I like cauliflower better.” He said smirking.

“That’s it, we can’t be together. Cauliflower, how could you?” Arabella pouted.

“Let’s hear your favorite vegetable,” He challenged her.

“Well, carrots. They help you see better.” Arabella said giggling.

Lukis rolled his eyes.

“Walked right into that one, didn’t I?”

“Yeah you did.” She replied.

They quickly finished up their food and then they both decided to have dessert.

Arabella requested the baked Alaska. Lukis agreed. He would want that as well.

The booth rotated giving them a beautiful view of the night sky that looked purple.

“Isn’t the view beautiful?” She asked him.

Then she looked at him and realized he was not even looking at the view.

“I could think of one view that’s even more amazing.” He said.

Then suddenly, he stood up.

“What are you doing?” She asked.

“This,” He replied.

Then he got on his knees.

“All my life I was looking for someone as beautiful, as graceful, and as independent as you. I

need you in my life.”, he said. Then, he pulled out a ring box from his pocket. Arabella gasped.

She was in shock.

The box held a silver ring and she believed the gem was garnet, but she was not sure what type.

“This can’t be happening.”, she said. Her face was red.

“Why?”, he asked not sounding mad, just curious. He was still on his knees in front of her.

Arabella felt hot all over; After all, the people she did not even see before, because she was so

enthralled with Lukis, were now glaring at her.

“This is why.”, she said as the waitress brought a Baked Alaska for her and for him, but there

was something on his.

“Is this a ring?”, he asked reverently.

“Yeah.” The ring she got him was platinum with their initials engraved on the ring.

“Yes.”, he said. A torrent of tears fell down her face and she kissed him all over his face. While

she was kissing him, he slipped on the ring he brought her.

“Do you like it?”, he asked.

“No, I love it!”, she replied.

“What is it?” Arabella asked, curious now.

“It’s a rare demantoid garnet”, he said, smiling.

Without her having to ask, he continued.

“My grandmother on my last birthday gave me this ring and told me to give it to someone I

loved.” He said picking her up from the seat and sliding under her. Now she was sitting on his

lap nestled in his arms. “So, please put it to good use.” He said playing with her long hair that

she had in a twist.

“Let’s finish this dessert.” She said.

“You are my world.” He said turning her around and kissing her. Arabella heard applause from

the people in the restaurant, but she did not care. She was in love floating on cloud nine she

could not help but think, this really was the perfect proposal.
