NOTE- This is my first book written on Reedsy, and I'm personally really proud of it!
"Oh, common, I think you would love it!" Kelly tried to persuade her friend while keeping her eyes on the road.
"No, I don't think I would be any good at it," Bree said shyly. Kelly had been trying for months to try to get Bree into photography, but Bree wouldn't budge.
"Listen, I have my camera with me, we can take a few pictures here" Kelly pulled into the parking lot.
"Fine, but just this once, ok?' Bree finally gave in.
"Deal!" Kelly said excitedly. Bree is going to LOVE this! Kelly thought.
They got out of the silver Nissan and walked toward the playground. They soon found a nice, green clover patch, and sat down, Kelly pulled her matte black Nikon from her camera bag.
"Don't worry, it's not as hard as it looks, you just have to get the right angle" Kelly said, her curly blonde locks blew in the slight spring wind.
"I just don't want to mess up" Bree's worried expression brought compassion to Kelly's heart.
"I understand that, when I first started, I was scared to mess up too, but it just came naturally to me, now I'm not saying I have never tooken a bad picture, 'cause I know I have, but I was ok with it because I knew it would help me get better"
"Tooken? That's not a standard word you know, it's supposed to be taken" Bree smiled
"You know what I meant" Kelly rolled her eyes playfully.
"Do I?" Bree loved to exasperate her.
"Whatever. Ok, are you ready to start?" Kelly put her hand on Bree's dark-skinned arm.
"You got this" Kelly watched as Bree picked up the camera, she had seen Kelly do this a million times. Bree held it about a foot from the ground, and pointed it to a single white clover, she zoomed in a bit and tried to steady her hands, a few seconds past, click. The two friends looked at the picture.
"It's a little blurry and it has an awkward angle," Kelly explained.
"See, I told you I would not be any good at it," Bree said sadly. Kelly felt bad for her. She wanted Bree to like this.
"Let's try again, but this time, I will do it." Kelly motioned her hand for the camera, Bree handed the Nikon to her.
Kelly held the camera to where it was almost touching the ground, and she pointed it at the clover, she balanced her hands on the ground and focused the camera on the white clover, a few seconds, click.
They looked at the photo, The white clover stood out from the blurred green clovers, the bright blue sky was visible above all the clovers, the picture was gorgeous! Bree looked in awe at Kelly.
"That is way better than mine"
"It takes practice, Bree, be patent," Kelly said lovingly. Bree wanted to make Kelly happy, but this just wasn't her passion like it was for Kelly.
"Maybe this just is not for me," Bree said with a disappointed expression, her frown suddenly turned in to a smile.
"Oh, no" Kelly knew that look, Bree had an idea.
"Oh, yes!" Bree laughed. I forgot to teach my student! Bree thought.
"Do you have a paper and pen?" Bree asked
"Uh, yeah, actually," Kelly rummaged through her light grey purse.
"Here," Kelly handed Bree a yellow sticky note and a black pen.
Bree wrote something down and handed it back to her.
"There, meet me tomorrow at that location, I have something to show you," Bree said with a suspicious look. Kelly stared at the curly half-cursive words, and then looked at the numbers, it was an address, a familiar one, but she couldn't place it.
"Why, again?" Kelly wondered, but she wasn't worried, cause she could tell by Bree's expression if she should be worried, but this expression was not one of those.
"You'll see" Bree laughed again.
The next day, Kelly drove to the location that was written on the yellow paper. The library? Kelly thought as she drove into the library parking lot, She spotted Bree standing outside the glass doors, her dark curly hair was down and it almost touched her shoulders, her eyes gleamed and it was like her entire face was smiling, she was holding a bundle of books also.
Kelly parked, stepped out of her car, and walked up to the front of the building.
"You ready?" Bree asked, still smiling.
"I do not know what for, but ok" Kelly followed her into the library, Bree spotted a kid sitting at a table, on his phone, he looked as if he were fourteen or so. Bree plopped her books down across the table from him and sat down.
"Hey, Max, how's your school coming?" Bree asked
"Good, I guess," He said. Suddenly Kelly knew what was going on, Bree had always talked about a kid named Max and her tutoring him in Language Arts and ELA, now she had dragged Kelly into it, even though Bree knew Kelly didn't like teaching or ELA.
"What am I doing here!" Kelly whispered to Bree. Bree got up.
"I just wanted to bring you along" Bree smiled.
"So, all of that yesterday just for this?" Kelly was so confused.
"Yep, it's just for one hour, come on, it's fine we will go get ice cream after," Bree said.
Kelly did not enjoy that one hour, but Bree thrived. Afterward, Kelly and Bree went to get ice cream. They walked inside the dairy shop.
"That was fun!" Bree said with a huge smile, Kelly could tell it was what she loved to do. They ordered and carried their sundaes back to their seats.
"Maybe the whole thing yesterday wasn't just for the tutoring, I wanted to show you that my passions are different than yours and that's ok, I love teaching kids and it's what I want to do, I don't like photography, and I'm not good at it like you are, I like teaching." Bree waited for an answer.
"I would love it if you liked teaching, but it is not your passion, your passion is photography, and I get that." Bree stared into Kelly's sky blue eyes.
"Wow, I think I get it now, I've been trying all this time to get you to like something that you don't have a passion for and, well, you have a passion for something else and I shouldn't hold you back from that" Kelly smiled, she understood now.
"And just because I have a passion for it does not mean that you are going to like it" Kelly added.
"Let's be honest, you looked so bored in that library, I thought you were going to fall asleep!" Bree started laughing.
"I tried my best to stay awake, I missed like, half of that you were saying, something about prepositions and sentences, I forget" The two friends laughed until their sides hurt, they finally understood that just because one person likes it does not mean everybody will enjoy it too.

It is a nice piece. The dialogue is lively. Maybe a bit more time spent on the teaching would have balanced the time spent on photography, made the conflict between their different interests more evident. But their dialogue is very natural.
