Fiction

Dirt, worms, maggots are crawling all over my body. I have a splitting headache. My legs and arms are twisting in the wrong direction. I straighten my legs then my arms. That feels good.

Bugs be gone. Dirt be gone. I feel like a new person. Wait, something is wrong. My eyes are blurry. I blink twice. Nothing. I rub my eyes. Okay, that's a bit better. I never had the greatest eye sight.

Oh no! I know that sound. My stomach is growling. I need food. Where to get food? Something is else is wrong. I'm not home. Where am I?

I don't like this feeling I'm getting. I look at my arms. My hands. They are pasty and nasty. I look at the dress I'm wearing. It's my best dress and my best shoes.

I turn around. Oh My God! I'm dead. Now I'm back. What am I? I know from all the movies I watched. I'm the walking dead. The living dead. I'm a zombie.

"Die you zombie." That's a funny thing to say. We are dead. Who said such a thing? I look to see where the noise came from.

There in the distance are a group of living surrounding someone like me, a zombie. I guess my eye sight is getting better. What are they doing?

"There is one right there." I guess I don't have to find out. That's a large group of living . Crap! They are coming after me.

I need my legs to work. Here I go. I begin to run. I still hear them. I don't want to end up like that other zombie. I know what it feels like to be dead. I don't want to relive dying.

I will myself to run and run. Do zombies pant? Because that's what I'm doing right now. I need to stop. I still hear them coming. I find a tree to hide.

One good thing about being a zombie is that I can smell the living. Man, the living smell bad. Did I smell like that when I was alive?

I see the humans passing me. Good, they didn't see me. I don't know what to do now? I look at myself. I look dead. That's right I am dead.

I need clothes, specifically non dead clothes. How am I going to get passing the living? I'm stuck behind this tree until the living leave.

You know what I don't even know how I died. I can't remember anything about my living life. Is that sad or what?

Isn't it crazy that a dead woman is cold. I need to change out of these clothes reals fast. I look at the living. They are still in the same place. Damn! When are they leaving?

I'm not tired nor sleepy. Watching the living is worth the wait. I figured out the guy in the middle of the crowd with the red shirt and sandy blond hair is the leader.

I have to watch out for him at all cost. Well, I have to watch out for all of them but that one looks more dangerous than the others.

I see some of the living leaving including the leader. Some are staying behind. I walk in step with the living who are leaving. Where are they going?

I see something up ahead. I'm in a cemetery. Of course, I would be in a cemetery. This is where the dead reside. This is quite a pickle I'm in. Should I leave or stay?

I'm safe in a cemetery. At least I have places to hide but if I leave, I'm in danger of dying for a second time. Then again, the living are out to get rid of my kind.

There are so many living in the cemetery but for now they are in one place. How long will that last? I guess not long. I see them spreading out. I'm in so much danger now.

I'm leaving the cemetery. I quietly to the best of my ability begin to leave the cemetery. Okay, I check both ways. The backs of the living are turned away from me.

Up ahead I see a big tree where I can hide. Here I go. Come on legs you got to work for me. One, two, three. I run past the living and hide behind the tree.

I peek out from my hiding place. Good, they didn't see me. Some of the living are mad. I wonder why? I strain to hear what they are saying. I do catch a few words.

The leader is angry they didn't catch me. They are going to come looking for me. This doesn't bode well for me. I keep watching the living. They are yelling louder but their words are confusing.

Crap! I see one of the living looking my way. What am I going to do? I peek out again. He's coming towards me. I see a bush. I hurry to the bush.

I hide inside the bush. The living, a guy is right on top of me. I inch further into the bush. "I know you are there. Come out. I won't hurt you."

Yea right. Like I'm going to listen to this living. The living are liars. I stay as quiet as I possibly can. "I know you are there. I can smell you."

I wonder if zombies get scared because right now, I'm scared. I close my eyes willing him to go away. After a few seconds, I hear nothing.

I wait a few more seconds. I hear the living leaving. I wait another few seconds. I slowly easy myself out of my hiding place.

I look both ways. No signs of the living. I stand up. What do I do now? I beginning walking. I see something on the floor. What is that?

I bend down and pick it up. It's food. Well, it looks good. Does it taste good? I pick it up and put it in my mouth. I'm so hungry, I finish all the food. I'm still alive. Well sort of.

I put the plate on the ground. I get back up and to my utter horror I'm staring into the eyes of a living. The same one I saw.

Wha to do? I move back. He moves back. I move back again. He moves back again. I turn around to run but I trip on a rock.

"Are you good over there?" There's another one. I'm going to die again. I attempt to get back up. He pushes me down. "Don't move."

"I'm okay. No zombie here."

He didn't give me up. Why? "Stay here and don't move." I'm confused. Instead of giving me up he saved me. A living saving a zombie. That's new.

I hear footsteps coming my way. "You can get up. Put these on." He gives me clothes. I put them on.

"Why are you helping?" I ask him. He looks at me but doesn't answer right away. He pushes me down. I hear him talking to someone.

He grabs my arm, puts my hat on. He tells me to be quiet and not to let go of his hand. I leave the safety of the forest with a living. He still hasn't answered my question.

We pass many of the living including the leader. I don't know where I am and I don't care as long as I'm not caught. The living holds my hand tighter. I do the same.

I hear the cries of my fellow zombies. The living are killing them. "Derek, what's the rush?" I'm going to get caught.

"I'm needed back home." I stand behind and closer to the living named Derek. "Who's your friend?" This is it. My time is up.

"Her name is Emily. I'm taking her home." Please go away. Please go away. "You are going to miss all the fun."

"I had enough fun." The living turns to leave. I breathe a sigh of relief. We keep moving.

"My car is right here." I nod. The living, Derek opens his car and helps me in. I look at him and ask him again.

"Why are you helping me?" He starts the car. We leave. "I'm taking you to a safe place where zombies are safe from us."

I nod. "To answer your question. My home has gone to a bad place. It's not the same place it used to be and it's the right thing to do."

I hope I can trust this living named Derek. I hope I'm not making the biggest mistake by putting my trust in him.
