I had such a hard time at the funeral. My mom, God rest her soul. Now I just feel so empty, wandering around this empty house with piles of old things waiting to be thrown out. You hardly know what to keep and what to ditch. I’m scared that I will throw out things that matter to me. Even though I have forgotten what they are!
I hated school. But I saw this grade 3 assignment that I did with Ms. Woodrow before she went on sick leave so long ago. Was it twenty years ago? Ran into it at the bottom of a pile of elementary school things. By no means did I keep everything over the years. It's more like the “greatest hits” of elementary school. Here it is:

Teacher Evaluation: Good job, Tyler. You worked hard! A great deal of thought went into this piece! Mark: B+
Parental Feedback:
Dear Ms Woodrow,
While I can appreciate that you have the best interests of our son at heart, I am concerned that this work is far too personal in nature. I would like to have a meeting with you at your earliest convenience. Please note that I have sent a copy of this assignment to the principal, and I am considering forwarding a copy to the superintendent of schools.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Constance Smith

There were so many supply teachers in our grade 3 class after Ms Woodrow went on sick leave. So many that the whole school started talking about us! Even the juniors would get out of our way in the schoolyard! Those were the days!
Funny. I hardly remember the rest of the year. Hardly did any work. We'd just rampage around the classroom and do anything we felt like. What a strange year!

I've never understood why teachers - at any level - as so undervalued. In many cases they spend more time with the child per day, than either parent. Yet school levees are more often than not voted down. A sad state of affairs. Loved young Tyler's revisions.

Oh I missed your comment, Trudy! Sorry! Thanks for reading. As a retired elementary teacher, I was surprised how easy it was to come up with Tyler's revisions. As for school underfunding, in Ontario it isn't really as big a problem as the lack of respect and the way too high expectations some parents and administrations have for teacher job performance. Anyway, thanks again for reading!

This was a rotten outcome for the boy and the teacher. You get his POV across really well in his writing. It seems like mum has much to learn. Such a sad story!

Thanks for reading, Helen. This was common in Ontario in the 1990s and the last two decades. What would generally happen is a parent would take a dislike (for whatever reason) to some aspect of a teacher's program and get other parents to join in. The administration would not support the teacher. Then, there would be meeting after meeting until the teacher went on sick leave or quit. You did not have to be a lousy teacher; maybe the victim needed to be more politically aware or was lacking in some small way. Hopefully, things will turn arou...

Hi Joe, I’m not a teacher, but in the UK I think it’s similar. In some ways, I think it may be the toughest it’s ever been. There never seems to be a balance. Teachers have such a tough time. Obviously, we don’t want to hark back to Victorian times either. Your story certainly struck a chord.
