Chapter 1
I stared at the fantastic view of the mountains as I lay on my lounge chair by the infinity pool of our new home. I’m still in awe that my mom made us move from New York, a bustling state, to this calm, peaceful environment in Phoenix, Arizona. I am abruptly interrupted by my sister Paige's deep thoughts, who jumps in the pool and splashed water on me. Hello...... Earth to Kaira... Didn’t you hear a word I said? I laughed, saying, of course, I did and got up to take a swim and splashback at Paige with the water. Shortly after, my mom came with a tray of ice-cold lemonade and assorted treats. She sat the tray on the table by the lounge chairs. We got out of the pool to indulge in our thirst-quenching drink when mom asked us how we liked our new home and to tell us she will be home late from work tomorrow—something about a meeting with an important client.
Mom is an Investment Banker, and she’s one of the best at what she does. The company went above and beyond to convince and-compensate her handsomely to move here! I love it! I said, thinking about my insanely massive bedroom with a walk-in closet the size of my whole room back in New York. And the highlight of all, my bathroom with a moonroof, walk-in glass shower, and step up hot tub/ Jacuzzi. Paige loved hers as well. She, too, had all the perks I did, but mine was more significant because I am older. The next few hours went by as we laughed, watched movies, and ate dinner. Then mom mentioned that we should get to know the neighborhood and try to make friends because school starts in a few months. A girlish grin followed by very flushed cheeks came across her face as she mentioned some kids our age that lives across the street.
Kids? How many are there? I asked as she explained she saw a young girl that looks around my age and three boys assuming they might be her brothers. Paige and I looked at each other, barely containing our excitement. Tomorrow we can Introduce ourselves.
Chapter 2
The next day I woke up to a note from my mom that she’ll be home late from work, and we can have leftovers for dinner. I looked at the time at 9:00 am; I jumped out of bed, raced to the refrigerator, got some orange juice, and headed back to my room. On the way there, I detoured to see if Paige was awake. I knocked and called out. Paige, are you awake? She didn’t respond. The door was slightly ajar, so I pushed it open farther, stuck my head in, and saw that she was knocked out. I closed the door and headed back to my room, grabbed my IPad, and snuggled in my California king size bed while I played my favorite fashion game.
Sleep finally takes my body, and before I know it, my body is relaxed as sweet dreams whisk through the unconscious. I awoke from the most blissful sleep I have ever gotten in my seventeen years of life. Paige came to my room and threw the covers off me. I got up and headed to shower and got ready to meet our neighbors. But before Paige and I led out, the doorbell rang. I went to see who it was. At the door stood a beautiful young girl. My first impression of the girl was that she was too beautiful to be living here in Phoenix.
She stood out like a rose in a garden of Lily’s; her dark hair was straight and shorter than mine, reaching her neck. She was tall, thin, and her unimaginable perfection and beauty appeared as if she existed somewhere beyond the sun. In short, she looked like she belonged in Hollywood. She grinned, “Hello,” I’m your neighbor from across the street. My name is Aurora, I saw you guys move in, and I’ve meant to stop by just got caught up with my annoying brothers. We all chuckled and introduced ourselves. I’m Kaira, and this is my sister Paige. We just moved here, as you know, from New York. It’s just my mom, sister, and I. Well then, welcome to Phoenix, she said.
You want to come by so I can introduce you guys to my brothers. We said sure and went across the street. She opened the door to her house and “Holy Crap.” I thought our home was lovely; this was beyond words. Trying to contain my excitement, I said, what a beautiful house. She said, thanks, our dad made sure we have a dope place and spoils us to make up for his constant absence in our lives. He works a lot and is always traveling. He’s the CEO of an international Trademark Company.
Just as she finished her sentence, three boys came down the stairs. First came the two brothers Kindle and Flash, Tall, Corky, and handsome, dallying down the stairs. They had a supernatural glow about them, but then again, they all looked out of this world.
The Last looked a bit older than the other two brothers, and he introduced himself as Alistair. His skin was beautifully tanned, silky, and champagne-colored. His eyes were dark, set deep above the highlands of his cheekbones. He looked about 6’2” and has a slender but muscular body. He had an astonishingly bright smile that would light up any room. Radiant like the Sun. I was dumbfounded by his beauty and had to get my thoughts together quickly. Aurora interrupted by inviting us to a pool party they are having this weekend. That sounds great! Paige and I said. We hung out a bit more, getting to know our new friends and neighbors, talking about the area, school and then watched a horror movie. We also played games, and surprisingly one of the brothers was even hitting on me. Flash started to flirt with me, and if looks could kill, as soon as he stared, Alistair caught my attention; I felt his eyes piercing right through me. We both kept glancing at each other. It’s getting pretty late; I said as we got up to head home. We said our goodbyes, and Aurora walked us out. See you on Saturday, she said. Paige and I reached home and decided to make dinner since the leftovers mom suggested in her note didn’t sit well in my stomach. And it would be good to do something nice for her. She works so hard to give us this life and life overall. I’m so grateful we have a mother like her. Our dad passed away five years ago, and it’s been a very rough journey, but we’re still moving on.
It is 8:30 when mom walked through the door. A huge smile danced across her beautiful face as she marveled at the dinner table placed with three dishes of Salmon, Asparagus, and red garlic mashed potatoes accompanied by One glass of white wine. She hugged us and thanked us, then ran to get showered and devour the decadent meal she was about to consume. As we sat around the table and ate, we were conversating, but my mind drifted into its little world. “ “Holy Crap,” why do I think about him. I try to shake the thought of him and continue with my night.
Chapter 3
The rest of the week goes by in a blur, and it is now Friday, The day before the pool party. I already had what I was planning to wear, so I popped in on Paige in her room to see if she was ok and prepared for the party as well. She confirmed she was all set, so I told her I’ll be back and headed for the door. Wanting some alone time, I walked towards a path near my house that leads into the famous Piestewa Peak, and this trail was Summit trail. I had no idea I lived near such a Monumental site. Aurora mentioned it when we hung out the other day. She told me this is one of the best spots to go hiking to get a good view of “The Valley of the Sun” on Piestewa Peak. I can just imagine how remarkable the pictures are, but I shrugged off that idea for another day. I won’t be hiking that far today; I just need to walk a little and think. As I kept walking, the feeling of being watched has become almost constant. I sat down by a trail
That had a fountain so beautiful, and the water flowing seems unreal. I reached out to touch it, and it disappeared just like that. My mouth opened in shock; I rubbed my eyes as if in a dream, but this was very real.
Without going into panic mode, I played it cool, got up, and started to walk back towards the path to my house. All of a sudden, I hear footsteps getting closer and closer. I picked up speed and started to run, I keep hearing a familiar voice calling out but everything is is a blur. I tripped over a big tree trunk lying on the ground, my knees gave out, and buckled down. The next thing I experienced was excruciating pain. My ankle snapped, and all I could do moan like a wounded animal while I swallowed salty tears that flowed like a river. I almost blacked out when I see Alistair run over to me and said OMG! are you ok? Why were you running from me?
I was calling out your name. I couldn’t tell him what I saw; he would think I’m crazy. But then maybe there’s something strange about this trail; after all, it is somewhat creepy. So I begin to explain what I saw. Alistair didn’t look surprised by my observation, but he played it off well, saying I must’ve been tired or thirsty and thought I saw a fountain. I screamed out in pain as he looked down at my ankle, and tears started to form in his eyes. Woo ah.....I’ve never had anyone cry overseeing me hurt like this except my mom, of course. Then he did something strange; he held my ankle with both hands, leaned over it, and the tears dropped one by one. About three specks of golden tears fell. They looked like little drops on sunlight as they landed on my ankle. Before I could say a word, my pain was gone; I no longer felt the aching and burning sensation I felt earlier. What did you just.. who are.... what are you? I asked.
He looked at me; his face was remorseful and apologetic. I’m sorry you had to find out this way; he said, if you didn’t break your ankle, I wouldn’t have had to heal you. But now you will know something that you cannot let anyone know. I nod in agreement, once every thousand years. One thousand four hundred sixty-one years to be exact, the phoenixes catch fire, burn to ash, and are reborn again from their ashes.
Contrary to legend, we aren’t birds but humanoid creatures. It is said that we can only exist once a time, but that is just a myth. There are many of us on earth, but only a few of us reside here in Phoenix, including my siblings and I. We are from a place in Paradise called Phoenicia. Our tears have healing powers. We are the strongest and most durable of supernatural creatures. We are reborn from ashes, but some are different; when we heal someone, there becomes a connection after being healed. It stabilizes the genes that our immortality allows us to be reborn back to ourselves instead of a new life. We came here because it is the closest thing to our home: the warmth, the heat, the valley of the sun. My brain couldn’t process this newly found information presented to me, and all I can remember is saying You, Aurora, your siblings are phoenixes... before everything around me went black.
Chapter 4
When I opened my eyes, I was surrounded by a pleasant, soothing ambiance. There were soft lighting and peaceful music followed by the sweet, fragrant smell of scented candles. I scanned the room and jumped up when I realized where I was. I was in Alistair’s room. There he sat across from me on a lounge chair, suddenly he walked over to me, and I stood up. Are you ok, Kaira? He asked; I didn't respond. He stood by a night table next to the bed, invading my space, but I had no complaints about the invasion. Even when I was quiet and avoiding his gaze, the warmth and sweet scent of me never left his awareness. Due to the tight space at the end of the table, my hips were pressed against his. The warmth radiated from my body to his and settled over him with a softness, therefore unknown. I can tell that I had a mesmerizing effect on him.
Finally, I spoke up and said, “I’m ok; just a bit surprised at the Breaking news!” We both laughed, and he breathed a sigh of relief as if a weight had been lifted off his shoulders. Hey, it’s not that late yet, and I would like to show you something. I contemplated in my mind if I wanted to be with him to end. I have been gone a while; I should check on Paige before we go, I said. We stopped by my house, and surprisingly there was music blaring through the speakers, and when we made our entrance, Aurora, kindle, and Flash were there hanging out with her.
We made our exit, and Alistair held my hand as we walked down the street. “Are we there yet ?” I asked, getting impatient. Not yet, Princess Kaira, he smiled, and my heart danced like a drum pounding a heavy beat. My heart pounded through my chest so hard, and I had to look down to see if what I was feeling was visible. Finally, we arrived at our destination. A beautiful garden that seemed almost magical took my breath away. The trees glistened under the stars, and there were beautiful streams of water flowing.
We walked over to a tree; under it was a blanket spread nicely, next to it a basket with all sorts of finger foods, drinks, and what looked to be an expensive bottle of champagne. I wonder if he remembers that I’m only 17, I thought to myself. And then the topper, sweet-smelling candles burning. My thoughts raced back to waking up in his room. When did you have time to prepare this? If I tell you I wouldn’t feel like I've accomplished surprising you now, would I ? he smiled, and that’s all I needed. We walked over and sat on the blanket; the night was calm, and the sky was beautifully lit with stars. They seem to appear so close, almost tangible. And then, one by one, the stars wink out of the sky.
Wow... this place is fantastic, I said; what a beautiful garden. Indeed it is Kaira; indeed it is, he said, lost in his thoughts, I come here sometimes just to bask in its tranquility. I can see why I said it’s so serene. We popped the champagne, and he looked at me and said, I know your seventeen, and I’m a few hundred years older than you, but I’m pretty sure you’ve had a drink before. I nodded in agreement, knowing I have snickered at his hilarious comparison in age as we burst into laughter. I was having so much fun being with him; I didn’t want the night to end. But after our feast and champagne-filled with laughter and fantastic conversation, it was time to call it a night. We walked back to our homes a few blocks away. Alistair walked me to my door; by that time, my mom was already home and met me at the door. Alistair correctly introduced himself and also invited my mom to the party tomorrow. I’m a bit over age for your party but thank you for the invite she said with a bright smile. Well, your welcome anytime, Ms. Moore. See you tomorrow Kaira, and just the thought of him saying my name made me swallow a lump in my throat and said, see you tomorrow. As we were going inside, mom said, so... I think someone likes you a lot! And from the looks of things, I think the feeling is mutual. My cheeks blushed a fire red, mom..... I said as I ran off to shower and replay the events of tonight in my mind.
