Fiction

Cassidy and I had always been close friends since high school and were totally inseparable, we did everything together, nothing stood in our way. When Cassidy I graduated from college they decided to go back to our home town in Jasper, Canada.

I went back to my parents and Cassidy went back to her boyfriend but before that I asked her "Hey Cass what are you gonna do now we've graduated?" and she said to me "I don't know I'm considering settling down with Aaron and getting married" I thought she was crazy to say that she was more intelligent than me and had such a career going for her. I said "Come on Cassidy you know you can't just settle down it'd be stupid with your talent as an artist you could be famous" at the time she just giggled at me but knew I was dead serious.

She said to me "What about you Adam?" turning to face me "What are your plans for the future?" I told her I was going to follow what I always wanted to do, open a business, "Come on did you really have to ask me what I wanted to do, or were you tryna be funny Cassidy you're so mean!" she just giggled at me and said "Sorry Adam I couldn't help myself"

I told her I'd see her later and we both went home, I said hi to my parents and I asked them to help me with my decision to start up a business and they were happy I'd chosen a good career. We all stayed up that night making ideas and a website for my business, I was going to start a business for home renovations. By the time the website and store was setup online I had already had various requests from people asking if they could give referrals and get quotes for their homes, I was finally doing what I had wanted to since high school and I couldn't have been happier. My parents were proud of me, my business was already going somewhere.

Before I knew it my business was famous through out Jasper and most of Canada I had multiple stores and I also had stores based in small parts of America too. I always hoped my business would go well but I didn't think it'd get that much attention. I was so happy when I first realised what a success my business was and the first person I called was Cassidy and she was just excited as me. I asked her to come see me and if I could treat her as she was the one who encouraged me to follow through with my idea for home renovations. She agreed and we spent the day at a theme park, we were only 22 at the time, and we went to the movies and then I dropped her back home, it was the first time we'd hung out since we parted ways after going home from college.

After that, I decided it was time for a change and moved to Calgary after saying goodbye to my parents and Cassidy, I even brought her a bracelet as one last thank you, I didn't find a girlfriend in the time from when I came back to when my business became a success, I didn't even get one when I moved to Calgary it wasn't a huge priority for me. I had a bigger focus, a new rival company I couldn't afford to lose to and had to take them down immediately, I spoke to Cassidy about it and she said it wasn't a big deal and that I didn't need to be so competitive, I told her she just didn't understand how serious the business world was not realising how stuck up of a comment that was until she changed her tone and told me she had to go, I felt so bad, she didn't deserve that.

I couldn't face Cassidy again for a few weeks so I focused on expanding my business to other countries in parts of Europe and Asia, although it was going to take months to prepare I knew I was going to have to start early, I have moved my business to countries I had planned from the start and it felt great but I still felt bad about Cassidy and decided to call her and told me she was about to call me as a I started apologising and she said it didn't matter, she told me she was getting married and I was invited. I told her I was happy for her but I didn't know why I felt so empty inside when she told me.

I spent the next few days figuring out why it hurt me so much only to it must have been because she wasn't going to be there for me anymore, so I decided to shut her out to avoid any unnecessary distractions to my work. I attended her wedding to be nice only to leave early because work meant more than her now I made that clear, she told me I was being selfish but I left anyway, I didn't care anymore. The next few months passed and Cassidy and my parents tried contacting my a lot but I ignored them I didn't need them anymore, Cassidy would leave and my parents could only do so much for me. Then she walked away from me for the last time. She was finally gone and I was finally able to focus on myself again despite feeling guilty about what I'd done.

The next few months passed and Cassidy and my parents tried contacting my a lot but I ignored them I didn't need them anymore, Cassidy would leave and my parents could only do, I was invited for multiple interviews all over Canada where I made it clear the only person I needed was myself. Cassidy called me after and left me a text saying 'How could you? We're done.' I didn't care anymore I didn't know why she did. A few months later she turned up at my house to try to get me to open up and for us to be friends again but I simply ignored her and continued to work and refuse to open up to her, our friendship was crumbling in front of me and I was scared but couldn't let anything get in the way of my success.

She came over every two months for the next year and I still refused to let her get in my way until eventually she said to me "You don't listen anyway I'll be quiet" and she turned around to leave. I couldn't help myself anymore I shouted with tears down my face as she walked out the door into the rain "Cassidy please come back I'm sorry I thought I could shut you out, shut how I felt out but I can't I'm sorry I'm so sorry" she just kept walking and I couldn't stop myself anymore "Cassidy please just come back I'm sorry I couldn't tell you but you got married Cassidy I love you please PLEASE come back"

She turned to look at me and said "I've been divorced for over 7 months Adam if you cared you'd have found out, if you truly cared about me than your stupid job you'd have known I've been waiting years to hear that but you never gave me the satisfaction so I won't grant it to you, Goodbye Adam " she turned around and walked away and that was the last time I ever spoke to Cassidy.
