He looked between us once more and said, “It’s either her or me.”

“Are you sure?” I asked. I was generally a loud person, but my voice was eerily steady and low.

“Yeah, I am. I’m sick of letting you get your way whenever you want it. So just leave her and come with me.” Jason answered. “I’m not giving in on this.”

“Why are you so sure I’ll choose you?” I knew he was a narcissist, but I really wanted to know his reasoning.

“Are you kidding? Of course you’ll choose me. We’ve been together for what, a year now? You just met her. So just drop this and let’s go.” He grabbed my hand to lead me away but my legs might as well have been made of lead because I wasn’t budging. “What now?”

I smiled as I said, “I choose her.”

His mouth open and closed like a fish out of water. He seriously never expected me to pick Macy over him.

“Don’t mess with me Sarah, I’ll leave, and you’ll never see me again. I swear.” He tried again to pull me away but when I didn’t move he dropped my hand. “What is your problem?” He asked.

“You are.” I chuckled lowly and took a deep breath of fresh air. It felt good to say out loud for once. “You are my problem you narcissistic, selfish, bastard.”

“After all the shit I’ve done for you, and you’re willing to just walk away?” He was fuming, but I wouldn’t change my mind.

“Jason, what exactly have you done for me?”

He listed off his fingers all the ways he thought he’s helped me or had been considerate of me, “I took you to dinner last week at your favorite restaurant, I got us tickets to see the playoffs in two weeks, and I was generous enough to take a day off work to take you to your doctors appointment.”

I couldn’t stop myself from laughing and by the expression on Jason’s face, he couldn’t understand why. “You’re right, you took me to a restaurant last week. We ate tacos, which were your favorite not mine. I prefer Italian. And you made mepay.” He opened his mouth to speak but I kept going, “As for the playoffs, I hate sports. I’ve told you repeatedly I hate sports. I’m still trying to figure out if the playoffs is football or basketball. Or maybe baseball? Doesn’t matter any-”

“How could you not know the playoffs?” He yelled at me as he cut me off.

“Really? That’s the part you find important?”

“It’s a—” he started explaining but it was my turn to interrupt. I didn’t care about his explanation and he didn’t deserve the chance to give me one.

“And I begged you for days to take me to my appointment. You only decided to take me when my dad called you yelling because I asked him to take me after you said no. You weren’t even working that day. So don’t make up that BS about taking a day off.”

“I still took you!” He complained. “I took time from my day to take you to the doctor.”

“Well gold star for you then.” I said sarcastically.

“I don’t get it, I thought we were solid.” He started pouting like I took away his favorite toy.

“Of course you did, I put in all the work.” I explained. “And now you think you have the right to decide my actions? You think you’re important enough to give me an ultimatum like that? I’ll choose Macy each and every time.” I crossed my arms, looked at Macy and smiled. Then I ran my fingers through her beautiful brown hair and she leaned into my touch.

“you’re crazy!” Jason threw his hands up in frustration. “You’re gonna leave me, your boyfriend of nearly a year for some bitch you met today?”

“Nope, I’m leaving my boyfriend of one year and four months for Macy, the sweetest girl in my life. But don’t worry, I’m sure you’ll find someone who won’t mind how inconsiderate you are and is willing to pay for everything. Or not… not my problem anymore.” I shrugged as if it had nothing to do with me.

Jason’s face went red and if he were a cartoon, smoke would have been coming out of his ears. I stifled my laugh, but I doubt I could hide the expression on my face. He looked too ridiculous to keep a straight face.

“You’re going to regret leaving me. When you wake up in the morning and I’m not there, don’t come crying to me begging me to come back, because you won’t be worth my time anymore.”

I looked back to Macy and smiled, “don’t worry, I wont be sad, because now when I wake up in the morning, I’ll see Macy’s beautiful face looking back at me, and I won’t remember yours at all.” I looked back to Jason and after a several minute stare off where neither of us spoke, he huffed and walked away.

“Let’s go girl,” I said to Macy, and my new beautiful German shepherd mix walked right by my side as we left. How could anyone think they were more important to me than my sweet rescue, Macy.

three weeks go by since I adopted Macy and broke it off with Jason. I had several messages from him about how he would be considerate enough to give me a second chance. I sent him the middle finger emoji and then promptly blocked him from my phone and all my social media. He showed up to my house once, and was chased off by my good girl Macy who got a treat as a reward for scaring off the unwanted trash.

I threw a blue ball across the field saying, “fetch!” And Macy took off running to go get it. when she returned to me, she not only had the ball, but another dog with her too. A golden retriever who was wagging his tail waiting for me to throw the ball again.

“And who are you sweetie?” I said to the mystery pup. I looked around but didn’t see anyone coming over for their dog. I checked his collar, it said his name was Chance and had a phone number to call. As I pulled out my phone, before I got a chance to call the number, I heard someone scream, “Chance! Come!” Chance didn’t budge. Then I saw a man running down a hill towards us. “Chance!” He continued yelling.

As he got to us, he was covered in sweat and out of breath. His dark wavy hair stuck to his face and he looked like the male lead of a hallmark movie.

“looks like Chance gave you a run for your money.” I laughed.

“I am so sorry,” he took in a lungful of air before continuing, “I was working on recall when he bolted. Did he bother you?”

“Not at all. Seems like my girl wanted to make a friend.” I nod to the two dogs who were now wrestling in the grass, the ball a distant memory. He looked over and chuckled. “You guys are welcomed to stay and play some fetch.” I said as I held up the ball, regaining the attention of both dogs.

“sure, as long as you don’t mind.” He answered.

I threw the ball and the two started racing for it. “My name’s Sarah.” I told him.

“I’m Logan.” He answered.
